The XV-18 Assault suit was developed to make Tau fire warriors capable of performing roles that were usually assigned to Vespid Stingwings, when the auxillaries were not available. Using several elements of the retired XV-15 stealth suit, it was lightened and the heavy Burst Cannon was replaced.
