Meanwhile Witch from Mercury is becoming as dark as when Tomino was running things (fewer casualties though).

Yeah, that new episode (17) was something else. The last episode of Eden’s Zero was really dark as well.

I may be getting old. A load of new series got a single episode watched before I ditched them….

They do have some weird stuff in Anime. And someone always walks in when even the most innocent of things are on that look suss out of context.

Which is most 90s Anime.

Perfect example: my wife walked in during the last episode of “Are You Lost?” which is a short (10 minute?) series about surviving when shipwrecked on an island. Just at the time they used an “alternative method” to stay hydrated…. I’ll say no more, but she acted like I was watching hentai…

It can feel like that in a lot of Anime - though often the more serious ones do try to stick to the laws of physics. Though even serious stuff like Ghost in the Shell gets sucked into “fan service” at times.

There’s even a term for the ridiculous stuff - The Gainax Bounce - because it’s so common.

Then there’s the other common trope which is the umm, how to say it… exposed underwear shot.

Honestly if it was real life the camera operator would get a restraining order.

Then there’s some series which take that concept and the piss and run with it, like Najica Blitz Tactics - where almost every shot is framed as if the camera was floor mounted.

I’ll say no more, but she acted like I was watching hentai…

Maybe as an experiment you should and see if a: she only walks in on the boring bits or b: she sees the racy bits but doesn’t notice any difference with the stuff she usually catches you watching.

Rosario Vampire was an awesome manga. The anime version sucked because the entire show was “filmed” with up-skirt shots. Every. Single. Scene. (No, I didn’t watch the whole series.)

I’m shocked. Shocked and appalled. Poor Gainax. Probably got stuck with it because they’re an awesome studio…. Loads of their anime have smaller breasted characters with realistic physics.

But I do admit the definition itself is pretty funny. Especially the part about how they have to bounce independently of each other. Ah, well.

Edit: the only reference to this type of thing I can recall hearing in the past is “jiggle factor.”

The term dates from the 90s were things were a lot tamer and fan service wasn't as gratuitous as it is now, things we think of as being pretty gratuitous at the time (skin tight entry suits and Shinji's awkward "fell on top of you" in Evangelion for example) are pretty passe or have long since slipped into trope territory, so it may seem a little undeserved here in 2023, but in the 90s when the term was coined Gainax did have a reputation for being a lot more obvious in how they animated boobs

Speaking of Gainax, I'm reminded yet again of how great Gunbuster is... the most powerful giant robot not named Ideon, Getter Emperor, or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (and only one of those preceded it). Nice mix of hard sci-fi and not even close to hard...

...and yes I do want a Dominus named "Nunbuster" in that colour scheme for my ladies.

Feeling like a bad anime fan…. So many series have been dropped, and most didn’t get my usual 4-episode trial. But there are a lot, I’m getting old, and Isekai is getting really really annoying….

What'd be fresh is an anime adaptation of the OG isekai: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court but make it a shonen tournament anime.

I'm a happy, though only casual, anime fan. I've finally started Gundam Witch from Mercury and it's been pretty great so far. Interesting genre mix while still maintaining various expected Gundam elements.

@MusingWarboss whoa…. Those are on Disney+ now?!? There’s some dark ones in there! Like, super violent. I’ve only seen a few episodes of Tengoku Daimyou on Hulu, but I really liked it. Tokyo Revengers was really good. Summertime Rendering was really twisted, but it’s another Hulu series so I didn’t get too far in (Password and technology issues).

@cronevald Witch from Mercury is really good so far. It’s one of the few I’m keeping up with.

I’m sure Disney has a load of stuff from Hulu and/or Star, at least licensed for the UK market anyway.
