Anime Corner

I don't really watch horror anime, but I love horror manga. Probably because japanese-produced anime tends to blur/black-out any sort of major gore, which takes me out of the moment as far as viewing. It's less of an issue in the manga for me due to it being less censored in general or at least easier to ignore for my brain for some reason. Plus, I enjoy the black and white of most manga vs the full color of most anime, it somehow makes the art more interesting to me.

I've never been a horror genre person in any capacity. That said, I watched Dark Gathering anime over the last couple of weeks and enjoyed it quite a bit. I think it was because of the style of the spirits, the world building through the teaching how to fight the spirits and the droll, monotone "Let's go." battle cry.

I also watched the first episode of Dandadan last night which was bonkers from a visual stand point while mashing up occult, ufo and teens in high school genres. Looks like it will be interesting to watch.

Dandadan is a weird one, because it’s new this season and airing simultaneously on Crunchyroll and Hulu.

So two episodes into this season, and Dan da dan is the standout series so far. Hidive has only three new series this season and so far they’ve been pretty entertaining. Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon V, Loner Life in Another World (ugh, isekai), and How I Attended an All-Guys Mixer.

It's on Netflix too. First time being into the "It" anime at the beginning. Kind of fun but also frustrating trying to learn more about the setting without running into spoilers from the many folks "reactalyzing".

Dang, can’t believe I typed Hulu. I don’t even have Hulu anymore.

I just avoid all of the online anime communities. So i never have that problem.

This is probably low level anime talk, but I went to see the Boy and the Heron when it was at the cinema (humble brag:watched it subbed) and I’m just wondering what other yaks thought of it?

My wife and I saw it in the theatre- dubbed version. We're big Ghibli fans and really enjoyed it. Definitely not an easy one to watch as it delves into trauma and ptsd, but very good.

Just watched the six-episode Tokyo Override on Netflix. Pretty good stuff in a cyberpunk setting. Not heavy on the gang stuff, but more of technological thing.

It might be one of the partial CGI/partial animation ones that annoy @Punktaku, but I watched Yakitori - Soldiers of Misfortune and rather enjoyed it.

Particularly the cutesy bunny AI* calling in artillery bombardments in the nicest possible way.

And who doesn't like a little techno Mozart.

(*I've seen almost the same character in other places, I guess it's an anime trope of some kind?)

wait,I enjoyed Yakitori! I can’t quite put my finger on what turns me off about certain CGI. Sometimes it’s that they’re trying too hard to be realistic, but other times it’s so realistic I love it. The one I was complaining about recently was extremely lazy CGI. Two-color, flat, and repetitive. Like copy paste repetition.

Speaking of CGI, I caught up with all my series so I needed something new to check out. So at only 4 episodes, I figured I’d try Digital Circus on Netflix. Looked a bit “kiddy” but sometimes those are ok, and I just needed something for background noise (essentially) while doing stuff.

Holy crap, this series is heavy. And dark. And wow, talk about an existential crisis…

Sometimes Anime series can be like that - give you one look but then quickly switch over to something else.

“Charlotte” does that - I thought it was going to be another weird high school comedy… and it was… until…

If anyone has Amazon prime, Secret Level series is a must watch!
Trying very hard not to spoil anything: I was watching the first one thinking WOW WEE! where is the story going to go from here? Before realising each episode is self contained! My personal favorite is one about a cursed king, but there’s even a ligit space marine episode! (I like the first half)

As it’s April, the winter season is ending and the spring season is beginning. Lots of first episodes have dropped. And I must say that I’m honestly considering dropping my anime streaming services. HiDive in particular as there was nothing of interest last season, and the current season is meh. The service is clunky and hard to navigate as well.

I’m even considering dropping Crunchyroll. Sooo much Isekai, and all the first episodes I’ve seen so far have been dull. “Please out them on, Takamine-San” was probably the worst, but if you like fan service (it’s rated 18+) have a look. It’s about a girl with ridiculously large boobs who can change time by removing her under garments. But the removed underwear vanish to cause the time change.

I never seem to get time to watch any at the moment - so the only subscription I have is a free one.

I did read about the time travelling one - via social media where a clip was posted. Seems a bit… eurgh. The premise is weird but not in an interesting way. It seems pointlessly “fan service” themed just for the heck of it.

Plus the main girls way of getting the “closet” (some poor sop who has to carry spares) was… unusually cruel.

One to miss.
