N18 Beginners Question Box

Hi,
I'm new to Necromunda and have some questions regarding the rules and these great tools, here at yaktribe.

In our Crew we play a lot of 40k and Ronin (great game, should try it) and now we want to start with Necromunda.
We got the rulebook from 2023 and everyone bought a gang box.
Most of the rules are easy to understand, if you know 40k and other games, but some things are confusing.

So here are my questions:
1. Do we really need the house books, or will they be useless if we use the tools here?

2. If I want to use the tools, I have to chose between two versions - Necromunda/ Underhive. Which of the tools will match with the 2023 rules? So, which tool do I need?

3. Are there any differnces between the rules, the tool uses and the rules from 2023?

4. regarding question 3:
I started a gang and wanted to equip them with different weapons I found in the rulebook from 2023. But I can't find them in the tool. e.g. the Bolter. I can only chose the Combi Bolter with the needle pistol.
What's the reason behind this?
I don't understand it. Do the tools and 2023 do not match, or did I miss something?

I hope, that some of the veterans could help me! Would be great!

Thank you!

Kumasan

@Kumasan Welcome to the Tribe! Here's an attempt to answer your questions, and hopefully others will chime in:

  1. You may need the "House Of" books if you're using the Core Rulebook from circa 2023. I don't have a copy of it (I have the old, now obsolete Rulebook + Gangs of the Underhive books), so I'm not sure of the extent of the rules for building & equipping a gang in the Core Rulebook. It is likely, however, that there are many rules in the Yaktribe gang builder tool that come from the "House Of" books and are not found in the Core Rulebook.
  2. Yaktribe first presents you with a choice of "Necromunda: Underhive Tools" and "Necromunda Tools." Necromunda: Underhive Tools is for the modern iteration of the game; Necromunda Tools is for the 1995 version (or the Community Edition, which is based on the 1995 rules) of Necromunda. Once you choose "Necromunda: Underhive Tools" you will be able to select whether you're using the older "Gangs of the Underhive" gang building lists, or the current "House Of" gang building lists from a drop-down menu.
  3. Yes. I believe the owner & creator of Yaktribe (@Malo ) has not kept the Yaktribe tools current with all the crazy changes to the game - especially the Ash Wastes stuff, but probably also the Hive Secundus stuff. I'm not sure if there is support for Outcast gangs and the like either.
  4. It's possible that the weapon you wanted is not allowed for the figher type, or it could be that you're using the tool for the old 1995 version of Necromunda... There is a bit of a learning curve to using the tools, so I'd recommend making a practice gang or two.

Re: 1
I have the 2023 rulebook, and can confirm that you need at least one of the other books - either a house book for the house gang you want to run or book of Outcast if you want to build an Outcast gang or book of Peril for a Venator gang. If you want to use vehicles, there are rules for them in the Rulebook, except they do not tell you what the vehicle dice look like… and you cannot officially buy those anymore either . Welcome to Necromunda :)

Boltgun is Rare 8 at the Trading Post. You have to actively go out and attempt to find it after your first battle before you can buy it. Therefore, it will not by default be available to any gang at creation. Gangs have a limited equipment table with options per fighter class that is always available. Some gangs may have bolter available to some fighters all the time. Or bolter variants, as you found with Escher.

Here you can see what Pistols and Basic weapons Escher can start with:

Bolter is in fact always available to Leader (L) and normal Champion (C). No other Escher fighters has access to Basic weapons from Trading Post (✓), so it doesn't help even if you find it at the Trading Post. Only other Escher model that can take bolter are vehicles (V).

I believe Malo finished Ash Waste (box set) rules, but the Book of Outcasts was so complex (due to the ability to take ANY model and make it your leader) that he stopped making updates. So any Book of or box set, apocrypha, or FAQ update since the Ash Waste box has not been put into the tools. BUT there’s the customization feature, so you can do it yourself. It just doesn’t transfer to other players (I believe).

Hey! Thank you, for your answers guys!
It helps a lot and the "fog is liftig" a bit.
I'm going to create a new test gang later.

I will be back, if I have some new questions ;)

Thanks!

Hey, checked out the tool again and used the HoB ruleset.
Now everything works. All the weapons, armors, equipment and even the pets are there.
Everything is like in the corebook 2023.

Great, now we can start!

Thank you, for your support!

Not true! They just released an updated Venator list as a free PDF downloadable from Warhammer Community.

So you could just use that and the 2023 rulebook.
Though... that Venator list as a free PDF refers you to every single House Of book, as well as the Squat gang list. So it isn't that easily a way to avoid referencing the books.

Classic GW. 🤣

Pretty sure that’s for Gang Legacy, you don’t have to use that and if you do and want to see what weapons are accessible to the Leader of each House… pretty sure you can check on the tools here or get the Necrodamus PDF. 🤫

Don't forget Book of Outcasts to be able to upgrade Venator to psychers  All you need is this and that. And possibly the other... or just get a community rules compilation and be done with it

There are often questions about how to get started in Necromunda, and I just saw this helpful video. It provides a nice overview of the "state of the game" and what's needed to get started:

Hey, me again.
I have another question:
Save rolls:
In 40k you have the category SV for your save rolls...(Intercessors have a 3+.)

In Necromunda the fighter hasn't got this, because it's determined by the armour he is wearing. For example, the mesh armour grants a +5 save roll. Right?

If your model doesn' t have any armour, does that mean, that you can't do a save roll?

Thank you again, for your help.

Yep, that is correct. You can think of every model coming with a 7+, which you can't roll normally. There is some gear that adds 1 to your save and if you don't have a save to start gives you a 6+.

Easiest to just imagine all models have a 7+ and you skip the roll of it isn't modified some how. The armors then replace the standard (non) save with what they state.

Hello need you help as native english speakers.
When a ganger goes AOE/heavy inj everyone around needs to make nerve tests. Does they need a line of sight to him ? Because first sentence says "see" my comrade thinks that it is needed to cause nerve tests.
Page 128 rulebook 2023

NERVE TESTS Seeing friends and comrades suffering serious injury can have quite a profound effect upon even the most hardened of underhive gangers. Therefore, fighters have to take a Nerve test when a friendly fighter is Prone and Seriously Injured or taken Out of Action within 3" of them, or a friendly vehicle is Wrecked within 6" of them. All fighters must test regardless of their Status and Secondary Status, though it should be noted that some fighters may be subject to a special rule that makes them immune to Nerve tests.

(if you're looking for a lore reason... your tiny plastic men likely scream when they get hurt... this then demoralizes their buddies, even if they can't see their friend screaming around the corner)
