N18 Beginners Question Box

(if you're looking for a lore reason... your tiny plastic men likely scream when they get hurt... this then demoralizes their buddies, even if they can't see their friend screaming around the corner)
no he thinks they need LOS and dont take any arguments against it
so only way is to ask here

Rulewise, I fully support Topsykretts interpretation.
The rules only mention 'within 3"',

line of sight, direction etc... has no impact in that interpretation

Hello, I am interested in returning to this game that I fell in love with in 1996.
But holy smokes there are a *lot* of books and rules for this thing. Quite overwhelming.
What is actually required to play a campaign in the Ash Wastes with a handful of gangs?

Yeah you can get all rules and resources from the community if you want it fast & free. Otherwise you have almost 30 books to choose from  It could be cut down to maybe 2-3 books if you wanted a minimal Underhive experience (no vehicles& mounts), but for Ash Wastes, you need at least 1-2 books per gang to also get their vehicle & mount options for Ash Wastes. So for 3 gangs, you'd want N23 rulebook (the one that came out in 2023), and 2 books per gang so probably around 7 books minimum.

If you want 'pick up games' then you probably need the latest edition. But, if you have a group to play with, I'd point out that the original 1996 rules are still the same as they always were. Nothing stops you returning to the 1996 version of the game. (What we call 'ORB' around here.)

I mean, if you have your local crew, it is also true that the 1995 or 2003 editions' rules are also still available, perfectly good, and free. The new editions of the game ARE good [I am currently in a campaign myself], and there is lots of rules support in the form of periodic hardcover books, giving them visibility. But the edition(s) that you already own are also well worth playing.

It may not be well accepted in GW stores, but for games played at home with your local gaming crew? Perfectly solid.

I must say that the 2003 edition is very similar to the 1995 but more balanced. The only problem may be to find the article that were on the fanatic magazine.

As with a few of the above the original game still exists and you can still play if you’ve got at least one other person who wants to. You can find all the original books on eBay for varying prices or you can find PDF copies here in The Vault.
As all these are long discontinued there’s no real legal issues unless you try to republish it.

Then there is the Community Edition which is a continuation of the 1995-2003 rules, updated and maintained by us, the community.

If you want to play the modern game then at least buy the Core Rulebook and your favourite gang to support production of the game by GW. Yes, you can find versions of dubious legality online but if no-one supports the system GW will scrap it along with the lovely models.

Pretty sure most of those are in The Vault here.

I m too tired to search or think so just a quick question do you get the short distance bonus when you use your stub gun in melee. Sorry I need to sleep and this is stuck in my head.

Hello folks!
I tried to get a group going last year, fell away- now getting some more interest.
Never really played, but I have the Hive War and Ash Wastes starter kits. I believe both of those rules are out of date now.
If I read/learn the starter set rules- will it be a big shift once I get the core rulebook? Also I assume the Ash Wastes rules are more updated since its newer?

Hate to invest more money in the core book if I am not positive this will "take" with my group.

Thanks!

Ok first thing no books are outdated if everyone else use them too.

The most recent rule is the core rulebook 2023. Then you may need one of the house book or house like book. Potentially the book of the outcast. Other than that you have free pdf file at your disposal including one about mutant and one about venator gang.

So the rest of the cost will be with terrain and maybe maybe miniature.

Thank you.
I mostly didn't want to learn on Ash Wastes, then as the group solidifies we end up getting the newest Core book and getting confused between the two
Not sure how much the rules changes, just don't wanna mix up the group if we change it out.

The yak gangbuilder / campaign manager is no longer supported.
Gyrinxapp and Mundamanager are safer (supported) bets.

most boxes come with simplified rules, allowing you to play (only) said boxed version.
If you plan to play different campaigns/settings, the 2023 rulebook and other books (apocrypha, specific gang books) are necessary.
most of the rules can also be found freely online (without artwork and lore).
