Ben's Bits n Bobs

Sure you have other things that should be finished first, but sometimes you just gotta go with the muse until it exhausts itself. Besides, I am interested to see what you do with the trucks.

That picture got more likes that some of my fully painted stuff. Not sure what to make of that. Anyway, here's a quick update:

This is my usual base mix: three tones of brown, two greys for some rocky bits, then picked out metallics (silver and bronze), drybrushed some red/orange rust, and finally a few spots of Nurgle's Rot.

That's the ground finished, I just need to decide on how to paint the mushroom/fungus bits (i.e. the lentils). I'm leaning towards a pink/purple scheme, with my more specific thoughts being:

1. A ring of darker pink/purple around the edge, fading to a lighter (lavender) colour towards the middle, with a yellow-ish dot in the very middle.

2. The lighter lavender round the edge, getting darker towards the middle, with lots of little yellow dots - like an agaric mushroom, although the danger is that it may look more like Mr Blobby...

Thanks for the prompt. I didn't quite finish these last month, but have had them done a few days now - I just hadn't got round to taking a photo:

I did start out trying to do little dots/specks of pale yellow, but that was going to take forever, so I settled for a rough stippling to give the general impression.

If you look at them as substructure for gubbins and underhivey goodness, there is a lot of potential. But it's way too "blank slate" at this point.
Kinda feels like looking at a rough sketch or early build in a 3d design process.
Not much to say until there's something to say, right?
Anyway, the paving looks a little more like cracked earth to me so you could do something Ash Wastey with that.. or maybe dust wall area?

They're intended for Frostgrave, rather than Necromunda, so I was intending them to be ruins made out of large stone blocks. I prefer to keep the terrain pretty simple, so it doesn't overshadow the models.

The ‘crazy paving’ will look great once it’s been undercoated! I think you could even get away with using it to texture the blocks if you have enough of it? (Im assuming it’s cork tiles?)

But otherwise love the concept, they are the big chunks of ancient ruins, their purpose or function long lost or forgotten! I especially like the arch.

Do you have any plans for texturing or for any architectual details?

When you compare them to current ancient ruins that are built atop even older ruins, megalithic stone block is a perfectly feasible construction method.

Oh!
Well, in that case hit them with some of that textured stone spray paint and go from there. Should work aces.

Once they are painted up I within they will be fine.

They are just going through that “ugly” phase of all modelling projects where you still see them for their base components rather than what they will actually be.

The fact that they are all super bright colours and are distinctly kids wooden blocks that I have at home is what is throwing me, but at least I know what to do with them once my kids have stopped using them!

Any plans to rough up some of the blocks to be more ruined? Maybe cast a couple of the blocks in plaster and smack them about a bit for broken bits?

That might have been a good idea. I do have some foam cubes somewhere that I might have been able to use for broken blocks. Too late now though.

I just coated the blocks in home-made texture paint (using baking soda and a bit of PVA).

It's a bit rougher than I'd like ideally, but I guess it will do. They're intended to be quick and easy scenery, rather than great scenery.

That might have been quicker and easier, though I wanted different texture on the ground.

I wasn't completely sold on them when they were bare, but I cautiously agreed with the others who said that a bit of texture would go a long way. And boy, did it ever! These definitely give off "look upon my works, ye might, and despair" vibes.

Like I said, I don't think the texture is quite what I ideally wanted, but it beats wood grain. I think it's probably the change of colour that is doing more here. I guess I'll see when I prime them.

I'm not sure how to paint the stone. My usual approach is grey for stone/brick, but with the texture these might look better as something more like sandstone.

Limestone sort of white to off yellow colour I think would work best. Possibly with a little bit of grey on areas where water would pool.

I would suggest looking up Neolithic and Megalithic temples to try and get the right colour for simple large stone temples.

Or you could go the basalt route but there are less large stone temples made out of it.

I accidentally stumbled upon this today, not sure if it’s something you could use:
