Ben's Bits n Bobs

Don’t take this as gospel but I’d be surprised if the yellow stuff isn’t post 80’s and asbestos free, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have other nasties mind. It’s that grey sheeting that might be, assuming it’s not just grey due to water damage. Troll did a spell as a loss adjuster many years ago.

Sounds like you made exactly the right call on the insurance! A shame it happened but you got everything important to safety and you only have to deal with a time of inconvenience. Also might be time to invest in a futon 😹
But seriously, hope it gets repaired in short order.

Still sleeping on an airbed in the living room. Having to move everything around has made us realise the need to de-clutter a bit. I wondered whether one way to reduce gaming stuff might be to try a slightly smaller scale. Here are some Dark Alliance 1:72 goblins, with an Oathmark goblin for scale:

I thought these would be good test models, because I could probably use them in 28mm games too.

I'm tempted to try Gorkamorka at reduced scale (~20mm). Trouble is I don't know whether this will save space or whether I'll end up having things twice (in different scales), effectively doubling up on stuff...

This is the way.

Those gobbos are really cute/cool!

Very little to report over the last month or two but, over Christmas, I did start playing around with some Hot Wheels...

Some 40k bitz (mostly ork) and cardboard. It has magnets on the top and rear for weapons/gubbinz. I do have some bits that fit, but forgot to include them in the photo.

And more stuff...

Long-time readers will probably recall that I like making tokens for objectives and other markers. I've done scrap/loot counters before, of course. (Multiple times.) But these ones are slightly different, in that they're 15mm counters. They're particularly intended for smaller scale games, but of course they could also be used with 28mm figures (smaller tokens making it easier to fit them on a model's base).

Time to have a go at painting those 1/72 goblins...

It's a soft, rubbery plastic which makes removing mould lines particularly tricky. I decided not to worry too much about them, though this could be a problem later given that I usually rely on washes and drybrushing...

Seems ok for the scale. I hate that plastic, I think the only thing that you can do (aside cutting them off with a razor) is use small files on the mold lines.

I don't like the plastic myself, particularly in conjunction with the smaller scale, but it seems to be what a lot of the 1/72 models use (I think).

Having looked around online, the common advice is to use a very sharp knife. I didn't think of trying a file. I wouldn't expect that to work well, but I could be surprised - perhaps I'll try it on another model.

I had a similar type plastic with the Cyberpunk Red minis (I think they called it thermoplastic?). The file was kinda aggressive on the plastic, but it didn’t flake off like the harder plastics.

So, I have the base colours blocked in:

One thing I'm not sure about is the hair. Most of these guys seem to have hair. It's grey for now, but I'm not too keen on that.

The other question is what to do next. My normal approach to painting would be to get to this stage, then do an all-over wash (Reikland Fleshshade usually) and some final highlights. I could try this, but I worry that it will emphasize those mould lines. I'm wondering whether I could do a more selective wash.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Grey was my plan, though the one above was too light. The only other real grey paint I have is Stormvermin Fur, which I thought wouldn't be different enough from the skin once washed, but I decided to give it a try - and the traditional all-over wash too. Didn't turn out too bad I think:

I'll add a couple of highlights - perhaps only on the skin - and call them done. All my stuff is for tabletop gaming, rather than display or competition, but that's especially true for these guys.
