Boltmeet UK 2023 - Event Details - 27th & 28th May 2023

It was a fun weekend. Enjoyed bolt action, although looking at the rules we were definitely getting some things wrong. Also enjoyed the games of Battletech.

Speaking of non existent variants, some of the early panzer III variants did actually have two coaxial machine guns, although these were removed from the mass produced variants.

Anyone heard from @MancInventor since the event?

Infinity seemed a confusing and stressful mistress!
More stressful than it needed to be lol. I think we bit off too much with 300 points, it led to some painful decision paralysis. Also the first short skill, ARO, second short skill takes some drumming in to people. I won’t mention any names.

@Edelweiss

@Kixz.

And let that be a lesson to anyone coming along and playing a different games system to one advertised for the event 🤣*

Thanks for paying the room costs though and giving the Troll £100+ worth of Armada ships…..it’s appreciated!

And 300 points was too little for Battletech. My intro game with @ClockworkOrange was perhaps the most pillow-fisted game of anything ever. Mechs moved around a lot and fired at each other but the mechs were poor underpowered variants and the rookie pilots couldn't hit the broad side of a Banshee.

I quite enjoyed 300 point Battletech as a training mission. Gentle intro to tactics (short version: get behind them) and how it actually played.

The exact opposite of what happened with the BFG - Impossible to really learn/refresh yourself on the rules in a game that was somewhere in the region of 15,000 points if not more. Which is why @ClockworkOrange and I had a randomly determined battle then went to play BA instead.

You can learn well with say 1500 point fleets (Battleship, maybe a Battlecruiser, three or four Cruisers and a handful of Escorts). Some kind of FleetMeet would be nice for that kind of thing.

Starting with a 1500 point fleet and rolling on the table in the rulebook to get a game size between 500 and 1500 points works well. 15,000 was hard work. I just don't play often enough to keep up with that. Was a fun spectacle though.

Also @radulykan , lets stop making every game of BFG the biggest game ever. Lets just play a small campaign one year?

Lol I already cut down by not including escorts!
Hoping to get a nid fleet sorted in time for the next game.
Fleet meet is a must at some point, proper campaign rules and everything even if it does mean cutting down on points 😀

Fleet meet would be great.

300 points Battletech forces you to make some choices with regards to what mechs you use and how skilled your pilots are. I thought the two games I played were pretty balanced overall although the Draconis Combine force could have used an assault mech to provide some tankiness (the Grand Dragon was extremely fast and gave a good account for himself,but was very expensive, would have been better off with an awesome or something similar). The Clan vs IS battle basically came down to who won initiative on the final turn.

I think the problem in mine and @ClockworkOrange 's game was that I had built two forces with heavy, slow mechs and poor pilots so they could tank hits but couldn't actually do much damage to each other without a lucky roll. Next time I'd go lighter on the mechs and better on the pilots.

There’s another problem when me and @Tiny play wargames, it always becomes some kind of Uber 3D chess type experience 🤣 some of the NCE games have been brutal.

Ps the Troll won 😝

Yes a fleetmeet would be cool. @Tiny your brute ram ships should of rolled 4 not 2 dice when ramming and I'm sure loads more was a bit off.
A big game could work as long as each player only has 2000pts max. This got a bit silly and must of been a bit overwhelming for some.
Looks cool though
