Necromunda Cardyfreak's Necromunda plog

Been so busy with the boys, decking, and arthritis that I’ve had very little hobby time of late. But having been dosed with steroids a few weeks ago, I launched myself at the decking and got it almost finished, but my bloody saw packed up so while it’s being repaired I decided to treat myself to a bit of painting.
Peachys video about hobby burnout proved a motivator as I’ve not had much desire to paint, but I’ve got about a billion guys primed and waiting for pint so thought I’d have a little fun.

Got this guy blasted out in a few hours using the old grey-scale method with contrast paints. I believe it’s being called slapchop. But the contrast paints work really well over grey-scaling and I sense it’ll be being used A LOT to get these chaos guys done.

And here’s a little WIP shot of the decking for good measure.

After much, much hobby flaccidity I have been slowly cutting out and gluing the mountains of terrain I have hoarded over the years. I decided to do the ash wastes and fronteris terrain as it fits together to play outside-the-hive games.

Here’s a few shots-

I moved my hobby space into the garden room and have space to get my airbrush set up so I’m hopeful I can get some stuff painted now life is returning to some sort of rhythm after the birth of the little man.

It’s going to have a workstation for wor lass to work from home at, it just hasn’t found its final form yet; but aye, I’ve totally taken it over with all my shite 😂

I got some AK heavy chipping fluid laid down and sprayed the main colour over top using Colour Forge spray paint. I’ve gone for some blues to conjure memories of the old terrain, I saw this scheme on Miniacs Necromunda video and thought it looked cool so I gave it a bash.

I either didn’t put enough of the chipping fluid down, or sprayed too much colour over the top because it didn’t chip as much as I was hoping for. I’ll weather it up more so it’s not a major problem, but I’ll defo be going harder on the other two habs.
The airbrush I’ve got is a cheap piece of crap from Amazon, so I treated myself to a Harder and Steenbeck Ultra 2024. I’ll still use the old one for this type of crap but I’m looking forward to trying the new one out.
I’m also going to buy a cheap nail scrubbing brush from the shop for this chipping process, I’m hoping the stiffer bristles should improve the effect on bigger pieces like this.

Great paint work... but I'll bet you hate the way some of those pieces go together as much as I did. Getting rid of some of those seams and filling all the gaps was an absolute chore. I genuinely can't fault you for not bothering.

Yes they were a pain in the arse with the seams, the floors are particularly bad for joining up. Im not particularly precious about terrain, I’ll give them a rub to get most of the sprue anchor points off but I’d rather spend time getting them painted than getting them to fit perfectly. It takes me long enough to even cut them off the sprue, I just want them done 😂

For anyone interested, I’ve been using Colour Forge sprays on these and I’m mightily impressed with the coverage and how well the primers adhere to the models. I’ve been scrubbing those terrain pieces like crazy and the underlying paint hasn’t come off at all, so it’s definitely got a good grip.

I’ve ordered quite a few cans over the last few months in preparation for the better weather to start priming, but found two of the cans wouldn’t rattle no matter how hard I tried. I contacted their support team and they have promptly sent out two replacement cans with no hassle. I’ll definitely be using them again, and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who’s thinking of giving them a try.

They were too much for me.. I couldn't let it go. Thankfully I didn't buy more than the base box so I only had to fill a half a gorillion seams...
That said, if you have a very strong and thing glue it isn't too much hassle but you have to do your work in stages so everything can cure. Plastruct plastic weld or Flexifile Plast I Weld are really high in MEK and you can get them to ooze nicely out of those gaps. You can just use a smooth knife or anything no-reactive to smoosh it back into the gap for a relatively quick and easy fill.

Had a semi-productive afternoon listening to the post office Horizon enquiry whilst slapping AK enamel dust stuff across the terrain, and some texture paint on the platforms to give it some visual interest. I’ll be adding some wash to the bright dust deposits to tone it down a bit.

I got one last year and have also been impressed with its excellent coverage, smooth but matte finish and colour match to GW’s line! Also mine was Sunset Yellow!! Perfect finish.

It’s like a manufacturer who actually knows how to make spray paint actually made them, as opposed to a lot of the hobby sprays which seem like they’re rebranded knockoffs made in someone’s garage. (Looking at you AP).

Yes - another unsponsored vote for Colour Forge if you want a hobby spray that just works.

Finished off most of the set now, just another single and double hab to detail but they’re all sprayed and chipped etc.
I’ve had loads of fun with these, first time I’ve tried out a dusty effect and I’m really happy with how they came out. Looking forward to having a game in the ash wastes soon!

Looks really good!

Nice blue, matches the Cawdor well - I assume that’s what you were going for!

Did you do a wash-on dust effect?

Powders can give an even dustier effect but quite often can run off if not fixed.

A tip if you fancy it (and have powder and a bit of time ) is to drybrush on Matt varnish (yes really) and then get some powder on your finger or the like and lightly blow that onto the matted areas and it will stick but not “melt” and still remain dusty.

Obviously experiment on something first if you’ve never done it.

I wasn’t trying to match Cawdor or anything, I just had the models out so thought I’d stick em in amongst it to grab some photos. I was more trying to capture the feel of the original card terrain.
For the dust I used a thinned enamal AK wash, went on super easy and left a nice dusty look after I rubbed it off to leave the rest in the recesses.

Sorry, off topic. Those tracked engine things? Are they part of a set or something? I had plans for fork lifts that will hopefully look something like that (at least tacked and of a similar size). Just wondering if there are other photos floating around.

They weren’t part of the ash wastes set, I got them in one of the Kill Team Kill Zone packs from a few years ago, it came with a crane and a bunch of containers. The vehicles are in one of the made-to-order sets currently up for pre-order on the GW website, I can get some photos of mine later if you like?
