Hello all,

I (and my playgroup) are just getting back into Necromunda since the 90s! I even have my old Cawdor metal figures! But I digress.

I've read around on the internet about how horrible the Cawdor/Redemptionist gang is and my question is: In a friendly campaign (read not min/maxed), are Cawdor playable, competitive, and fun?

My other question is, how the heck do I start a gang of 1000 credits? It seems so overwhelming! Do I go straight Cawdor? Straight Redemptionist? A mix! Please help!

I love the flavor of a bunch of fanatical cultist purging the unfaithful through fire. I even scored a set of Cawdor dice cheap from ebay.

Thank you in advance.

Cawdor used to suck, they actually perform a lot better now with acts of faith, and have a viable few strategies.
Edit: cawdor are definitely competitive now, but you have to be activation smart, and I think a lot of their success has to do with keeping a big gang and using articles ofnf faith as much as you need to.

Again activation economy is huge with cawdor. This means dont use your multi activations unless you need to, because if say you have a choice(10) scenario, and you're playing a goliath gang with say 7 fighters on the board, you could possibly have 13 or 14 fighters, so for the first 7 activations (or less if goliath multi activates) you're going activation for activation moving your slovenly hordes up, then your last 6 or 7 activations you start using some of your steonger fighters, you can do some reaaaal damage fast.

How you build your gang is depemdent mostly on how you want to play.

Baseline, you want between 2-3 bonepickers (juves) and one cawdor brethren (ganger) to fill out the free gangers you get from devout masses every game (and you can keep these cheap so the rest of your gang is well equipped. Bonepickers with stub guns are great bulletsoaks, and a brethren with blunderpole for template or autogun for rwnge) Otherwise its all how you want to play.
I do think that the heavy crossbow firebrand (cawdor champ) is borderline necessary, just because of the range and utility.

Pick the path of faith (for your articles of faith, cawdor unique mechanic) that meshes with the style of play you want, and pick either the R. Priest or cawdor word-keeper based on that and the role you want your leader to fill (basically either overseer or melee).
Path of the fanatic is redemption priest only, and it leans heavily on closing distance with the goal of melee.
Path of doomed is the horde path.
Path of redeemer is great if you want to use a lot of chain weapons.
And faith is mostly anti-psyker.

Otherwise your options are either hordey with cawdor fighters, or more specialised mid-range with redemptionists.

Eviscerators are awesome for redemptionists, I also think that chain glaive cawdor leader is phenomenal.

Theres a little word vomit lol, once you decide kind of the direction you want to go, making a gang becomes so much easier because like you said, all the cawdor choices can be overwhelming.

My personal preference is path of the redeemer with a gang of say 12-14, depending on how cheap you make your juves. Chainglaive leader, heavy crossbow champ, and Redemptionist brethren thrown in for shotty and chain axe, and maybe an eviscerator deacon or zealot (depending on credits)

Thank you so much for your reply! Definitely gives me some direction. I'll try and work out a starter list and see how things go from there.

Cawdor have always been fun. As for competitive, id say it depends on your local meta.

If you're in a bunch of players who build fun lists, and are happy to communicate and agree what makes/doesnt make the game fun for you all Cawdor are great scrappy underdogs with some neat tricks that makes games against them a blast.

If your group is full of people min/maxing Van Saar, or going crazy with Goliath gene smithing then you can expect to lose a lot and for everything to be less fun.

Our group is definitely the former. I doubt we will even have a Van Saar gang in the group, and gene smithing will be nonexistent. One guy is probably going to play Corpse Grinders, but we are all there to have fun, hang out and drink beer. No one is min/maxing anything.

So with that being said, I think I will start putting together a Cawdor/Redemptionist gang for our second campaign. Our first campaign I think I'm going to play Enforcers. We are playing basic Gangs of the Underhive for the first campaign to learn the rules. After that, we are free to expand out into the House of ... books.
