THE PRIZE
Winner will receive a NIB metal figure from 90's range Necromunda/Gorkamorka/2nd ed W40K.
Options. Pitslave Techno, Digga Shaman, Imperial guard Catachan
If there turns out to be more than 6 entrants (not entries) in the competion i will sweeten the pot by offering second prize (and a bonus loose ratskin for first prize)
If we have more than 12 entrants i will make a 3rd prize.

Prizes will be posted globally from australia by airmail by myself and i will be paying postage (yes its fo'freeeeee!)

THE COMP:
Basically a fluff competition about trading post common items. Anything that is listed as commonly available for purchased in Hive Primus. Weapons or gear. It is not a 'invent new gear' challenge but rather the challenge is to go int the nuances of an individual example. Think on how a vansaar produced autogun would be different to a goliath offering. The vansaar carbine might have milled receiver and polyfibre stock while the goliath longarm is a stamped receiver and crude tubeweld stock
Uniquely describe the fluff/details of a common item of the Necromunda world. Try to make it Faction specific (Is it a House manufactured? cobbled together by an underhive workshop loyalty-less scum? carved from spider chittin by a Ratskin? Found by a scavvy prospector?)

Having trouble understanding this? Think of the Ak47 , everyone recognises it, it is actually often used catch all term for a range of common models, The AK47, The AKM, the AK74, Ak-101... then you might go into details like russian, bulgarian, romanian, american, pakistani etc.. which leads to configuration, military/police/civilian, pistol grip, bayonet lug, barrel length, wooden or synth stock, fire mode? Single, auto, 3 shot burst
A hundred variations even before you hit the 'aftermarket' that essentially is an assault rifle or as we would say in 40k universe. 'Autogun'

Also look at a 'Smartphone' even with 3 main operating systems, hundreds of models from countless manufacturers and they essentially ALL do the same thing, all use the standard simcard (and expandable memory) all work on the network, an 'delaque' iphone can receive calls/text/data from an 'cawdor' android etc

Fluff supports in general that individual hive cities have a higher output than most planets or even solar systems. In many ways Necromunda is pretty much like Japan in the 60's through to the 90's, Raw materials come in from offworld, products go out, possibly straight back to the mines, fields and planets that they came from. Probably billions of merchant starships ferrying goods in and out.
The way i see it each House is independent and they try to gain an edge on the other with their goods whether its quality, quantity or design variation. The bulk of the goods are probably indeed identical in galactic terms. I see a lot of cottage/boutique industries within the houses for small volume contracts etc. A standard lasgun destined to a contract for a offworld guardsman with a 20 hour life expectancy is not going to be the same as a lasgun found in a ntract for a rogue traders professional outfit.
The simpler way to argue the point though is necromunda weapon blisters are generic all the weapons on the GW miniatures look different sometimes even in the same gang (EG stubguns) This is plainly because 'looks cool'. So miniatures have autoguns that look vastly different because even when they are sourced from the same house they are constructed for different markets.

THE RULES

1) It must be a current Common Item. This is NOT invent a new item. It can be any item listed as 'Common' in the Trading Post (and outlaw tradingpost) of Original Rulebook, the Living Rulebook or Community Rulebook. This means if your item is for a common weapon you are not restricted by House weapon list (but kudos to you if you do)

2) Each forum member can submit up to three entries. HOWEVER only one entry may be a weapon. 48 HOUR MAD DASH HAS BEN ACTIVATED YOU MAY NOW HAVE TWO SEPARATE WEAPON ENTRIES

3) Try to keep the description short so its an easy read (suggested max of 3 short paragraphs ) unlike the Escher Laspitol example i have include below which is a little long . Include a list of common users within the description. You can include authors notes at bottom to clarify what you where going for or reference inspirations but its not manditory. Once submitted you may not edit your entry but you may resubmit a single entry with the titled REVISED VERSION in title before cut off. Entries are TEXT only , images drawings may be included as part of authors notes but will not be included in final draft.

4)Entries close on the 14 of Sept, winner and runner up will be decided by forum votes over two weeks.

5) Finally please note that when refering to 'House pattern' outside of the universal Mars pattern or other off-world designs.
As each manufacturing House is internally administered individually Marks are not sequential when comparing House to House items. (Eg MK II Goliath combat knife has no relation to the similar funtion MK II Orlock combat knife, nor is a MK III Cawdor combat knife automatically an evolution of either of the two... but who knows maybe they did steal the design or have an ancient stamping die ) As Helmwarr maintains a monopoly on all space export and imports its only after his servants have approved the item is it given a Necromunda Mark 'number' designation which is quickly identified by the stylized H before the number. This is possible as despite the countless variations on common goods they share standardize mars pattern sizing and their is a high degree of interchangiblity of key components. (magazines etc)
It is however possible that small volumes of a 1000 units or less be procured by offworld buyers through export permits, bribes or smuggler networks. This makes it possible for people to have conflicting fluff.

Escherian Pattern 'Wardress' MkIV Snub Laspistol
The demure compact palm sized laspistol is a common issue among the uphive aristocrasy menials of the noble houses, as is its popularity as a last ditch sidearm with mechant guilders or as a humble tool of many underhive female denizens. Its is a common sight to find these nestled between a street harlots bosoom, hip holstered by the side of a rat-herdess watching over her flock or tucked away in the trappings of a escher ganger inner thigh. Unsuprisingly it is also colloquially known by the predatory and unsavoury as Whorebite, Portapimp and FemmeIron .
Built on a monocoque alluvex frame with simple nub sight, it is fitted with an internal Semprilic snub barrel with fixed focus set to a nominal 36 imperial strides. Coupled with its single shot and non-adjustable power coupler it is a capable of measily six shots with the factory fitted powercell. Other features include the oversised trigger for use with gloves, self contained heat-collector charging circuit built into pistol grip and the broad bladed skeleton micro-knife which tucks inside a groove parrallel to the barrel. Interestingly the rear ridge of the micro-knife's fingergrip forms the left post for the rear sight.

It was initially developed in M37 for a contract to fit the Standard Imperial Boot Holster of Solaris sector Navy crew in the wake of the fall of Hive Secundus House Dhatr. The previous sole supplier of a suitable pistol from Necromunda. Anxious to ensure necromundan source supply lines where not halted completely as with the fall of House Dhatr, the Imperial Navy uncharacteristic pressured the ruling House Helmwarr to award smaller volume contracts to numerous manufacturing Houses across the necromunda hives. To date only the Escher Pattern 'Wardress' Mk IV, the Delaque pattern Mk IX 'PitViper' and the Tvaṣṭṛ pattern MK VI 'LasCub' Subcompact laspistols have successfully continously maintaned one of the two hundred contracts issued by Helmwarr. Imperial Navy know this pistol as the Necromunda-pattern Crewman Las NH LXIX (Necromunda Pattern Crewman Lapistol Sidearm Necromunda Helmwarr LXIX)

Its success outside of the Navy contract can be attributed to its thumb sized Wardress Lascell that is essentually a shortened MKII Mars pattern Amp2 laspitol cell with the third lower power bank, heat collectors and charging circuit removed. Unlike its feature rich competitors such as the variable power and burst mode Delaque 'Pitviper' users have the ability to substitute the longer mars pattern lascell (along with similar socket powercell variants) which juts out of the pistol to gain additional shots and a faster independant lascell recharge.

Boutique workshops within House Escher offer individual buyers many customisable options such as custom engravings, precision Saphmin barrels, ornate grips, tooled rat hide holsters and exotic miniature monoblades just to name a few.
COMMON ITEM: LASPITOL
COMMON USERS: Noble house menials, Guilders, female entrepenuers , Escher Gang members

========================
Authors nots Well i got a little carried away with this one, but once i linked in an Imperial navy contract it seemed to make the little las really appealing. I could see the offworld navies 'upper brass' wanting a 'disposable survival pistol' for its ratings in case they are boarded or crash planetside but something that is impractical in a mass organised mutiny with limited shots, power, range and lack of standization across the board of 'Crewman' snubs. Got a malfunctioning orphan 'Crewman' design with no support parts? Take it back to supply fill out the paperwork and wait till you have approval to be issued a new orphan.

Mars Pattern MkII Jungle Machette

The ubiquitous MKII is a hand length shorter than the classic arm long MKI Jungle machette. It uses less material than the MKI and consequently examples can be found in almost every hive and manufacturing house on Necromunda. The classic cutlass shape, single edge, forward balance and general utility ensure it is suitability for countless enviroments from cane cutting on agriworlds to exploration of tropic frontier worlds.

The priesthood of Mars dictate a mandotory carbon content of no less than 0.9% and no more than 1.1% in its construction of base steel. Thickness and temper are also regulated with every batch requiring inspection from an appointed Techpriest for certification prior to export. Handle scale material can vary from moulded leather, carved bone to the more common bakelite.

Examples of the MKII like the MKI often find their way from the hive cities into the underhive and out in the ashwastes due to its flexibility for task such as cutting sinew cord and thin electrical wire, harvesting fungus, general kitchen duties and obvious defensive capabilities.
The blades are sold dull so that preferred edge may be attained and it is common for end users to modify the rounded tip into a spear or clip point.
COMMON ITEM: 5 CRED KNIFE
COMMON USERS: Ratskins Trappers, Ash nomad messengers, Holestead hired hands

----
Authors Notes: Was looking at my 12" ontario latin machette and how its shorter than my 18" latin machette which gave me the idea for 'hand length shorter' Its an example of 'out of the box' thinking on necromunda wares as the industrial hiveworld doesn't have jungles but would still mass manufacture such goods for the rest of the imperium.

THREE EM 1"x5/8" FILTER PLUGS

Originally produced in the manufactorums of neighbouring Ophelia VII, due south of Necromunda in the Segmentum Tempestus. Ophelia VII is known for being home to much the Eccleisarchy, having the Schola Progenium Seminaries and housing much of the Adepta Sororitas forces. With Necromunda lying in a conveniently central location between Ophelia VII and Terra, a natural trade route already existed which helped flood the hives of Necromunda with the Three Em Filter Plugs.

Their initial production was not meant to be as breathing filtration devices, but the use of Three Em Plugs as such came from an interesting turn of manufacturing. The product was originally meant to be used as loose-fill packaging, "packing peanuts", for weapons being produced on Necromunda to ensure that no weapons were damaged during warp-travel based distribution. Made from a mix of the countless supply of rough draft parchment that the Eccleisarchy scribed their "obligatory rules towards lifestyle and habit for maintaining human purity" and the sanitary napkins that were used by the innumerable regiments of Sisters of Battle, the Three Em Loose-Fill Packaging units were virtually costless to the Imperium.

However, as The Emperor and his administration are known for genetically altering their super soldiers with chem-drugs and indoctrination, feminine hygiene products were rendered unnecessary once a way was found to keep the Sisters battle-ready every day of the month. Knowing that production would soon cease, orders were placed to have unimaginable amounts of the Three Em product delivered to Necromunda. Ironically though, giving the weapons shipment containers a negative magnetic charge before loading meant that the contents could be secured with a magnetic force which made the packing peanuts useless.

It wasn't until large amounts of the supply were burned off and dumped in the sump that it was discovered that the packing peanuts were perfectly nostril sized. Often smelling unnecessarily like iron, Three Em Filter Plugs worked well in allowing wearers to safely breath the otherwise toxic atmospheres of the lower hive domes.

And that's where they came from!!

ORLOCK UNDERHIVE WORKSHOP "BEARDY" BOLTER MATCHED PAIR
The "Beardy" Pattern Boltgun & Bolt Pistol.

Built to order in an Orlock workshop based in the Underhive at a secret location, the "Beardy" pattern Bolter and Bolt-Pistol combo are artisan weapons of the highest quality (available for a decent price in the Underhive, of course). They are often sought out by gang leaders and gangers domes around. Not for the reason that they are any better at doing what it is that Bolters do (they detatch flesh and splinter bone as well as any other bolter readily available) but for the work that goes into decorating them.

The bolters each feature one completely flat, plate side, which the reknowned Orlock artisan (known only as Beardy) etches and decorates to order. Art-work is completed in two stages. The plate is added to the non-functional side of weapon and the beginning of a design is traced, though it remains unfinished until the Bolter's first blood is drawn. Once this has occurred, the proud ganger returns to the location he purchased it from and the final stage of the design is completed. The weapon is then said to be blessed by a terrifyingly disfigured Ratskin scout.

Though there is no evidence to suggest that the weapon functions any better than any other bolter built in the hive, a Beardy Pattern Bolter or Bolt Pistol is widely "believed" to help the wielder aim true. If the many stories that the denizens spread amongst each other are to be believed (and in many cases, they are not), the hit ratio of this particular variety of Bolt Weapon is higher than others by a ridiculous degree and many maimed gangers claim to have seen tell-tale etchings of Beardy's work prior to losing chunks of themselves.

Another myth associated to the Beardy Pattern is that - If you claim to have drawn blood with the weapon before taking it to be finished and blessed, that the gun will jam and it will surely remove the lying tongue from your mouth as it explodes into a million sharp fragments. Those who go to the trouble of tracking down the mysterious Beardy are rarely put off by this. If you believe in the superstition attached to the guns enough to go through the many channels needed to aquire such a weapon, you are unlikey to cheat yourself for the sake of status ...

... After all, the final incantation in the blessing's prayer ritual is, "On Your Head Be It!"

REPENTANT MACHINE PISTOL

The repentant was put forward by a ironsmith of the house of Cawdor whose name has been lost in time. The original contract details are still known though, as it was requested by an arch deacon from a nearby shrine world to equip his militia and defence forces with. The ironsmith’s genius led to the pistol exceeding all required specifications and being under budget in terms of material and labour costs. In addition to the exacting conditions of the firearm it also included a purity spike in the grip that would pierce the wielders fingers every time it was fired, reminding the wielder that they are fighting for the light of terra and the god-emperor. The repentant’s first and only shipment however never made it to the shrine world, as it was requisitioned by a passing guard regiment to refit their troops with. Unbeknownst to house Cawdor though, these were troops heading for a highly toxic warzone, and unbeknownst to the regiment, the repentants were all fitted with the purity spike. After 98% casualties were reported due to ‘weapon malfunction’ house Helmawr suspended house Cawdors contract, publically shaming them.

The Repentant is a heavy duty machine pistol capable of firing a punishing burst in a tight spray. The magazine provided is a twin feed extended mag, however these are prone to damage and replacements are hard to find. The internals can keep up the rapid rate of fire with slanted barrel feed and twin hammer studs that depress alternating so that when the first bullet leaves the barrel, 2 more are already in and entering leading to high ammo consumption. Its parts are all to standard imperial specs though so regular magazines can be fitted which will lead to a slower rate of fire and barrels can be changed for snub or extended versions. The main body of the pistol though is custom and sourcing parts for them can be difficult.

While this weapon is no longer officially produced, several Cawdor factories do small runs for private contracts, mainly to members of the church and other more puritan individuals with house guards to equip. The pistols purity spike fitted to the grip, means it has no shortage of buyers amongst the underhive gangs affiliated with Cawdor and the redemption.

ARANTHUS PATTERN MkI LASGUN

The Aranthus Pattern Lasgun is the result of the contract between House Aranthus and House Greim. A rare weapon to find on Necromunda since almost all of them have been shipped off-world to supply the Astra Militarum. Before House Aranthus succumbed to a horrific hive plague, it was responsible to produce weapons for House Greim, which they would then distribute off-world. This was quite uncommon in Necromunda at the time. The only other minor house to officially produce weapons was House Van Saar. The other houses in the hive would normally have contracts with the noble houses to supply the raw materials needed for production, as is the case with for example the Ulanti Contract.

However, House Greim had fallen out of favour with the Adeptus Mechanicus. Like all noble houses, the Greims send their young, known as Spyrers, into the Underhive to prove themselves. It was during one such hunts that the Spyrers killed a group of scavengers dwelling deep in the tunnels underneath Hive Primus. At first all seemed fine, the scavengers looked like escaped Pit Slaves. At closer inspection it became clear that the dead were actually an excavation team of the Mechanicus, on a mission to find archeotech. This mistake resulted in the Martian Priesthood ceasing all their contracts with House Greim for two hundred years. Unable to produce Mechanicus licenced goods, it would have meant an end of House Greim’s existing contracts with the Departmento Munitorum. However, having a minor house take care of the production, the Greims were able to maintain the distribution channels and preserve their power.

Both houses were fully aware that the Aranthus-Greim Contract was only a temporary measure until the imposed sanctions were over, this is why there were never any other Marks made of this weapon. For House Aranthus it meant a lucrative contract, it not only brought in wealth, but also increased Aranthus’ status within the hive, allowing it to compete against House Van Saar. Production continued for two hundreds years, thereby preventing the Adeptus Mechanicus’ sanctions to have any impact on House Greim’s contracts with the Departmento Munitorum. Suspicious of House Aranthus’ activities, and fearing the possibility of having another competitor, the Van Saars sent in their agents to Aranthus’ territories and learnt its secret: the Aranthus Pattern Lasgun was nothing more than an illegal modification of the M-Galaxy Pattern Lasgun, a weapon widely using throughout the Imperium and introduced in Necromunda during the final years of M35. Upon this discovery the Prefecture Magisterium, the Mechanicus’ division charged with guarding its dogmas, attempted to intervene. But by then it was already too late, the sanctions against House Greim had just ended, and all the Lasgun shipments were already offworld. Furthermore, the Prefecture couldn’t actually prove that House Greim had knowingly distributed heretic technology. Without this evidence the Mechanicus were unable to further sanction the Greims. However, the Priesthood of Mars would have its revenge on House Aranthus...

'JUVES LUCK' STUB GUN

Given the large number of workshops and back ally vendors at any given time in the Underhive, its easy to see why the cheap and easily manufactured stub guns are a popular choice among young and aspiring gangers. 'Juves Luck' does not describe a specific pattern, but rather the odd chance that the gun wielded by the rookie sometimes seem to infuse the user with extreme luck. Many juves manage to drop experienced gangers, and creatures, with their inferior firearms and marksmanship, and leave their hang around gangers jaws open, eyes staring.

As their first gun often helps them into full gang member status, a lot of juves hang on to their 'Juves Luck' stub guns as side arms, believeing they still carry their luck with them. And as they keep taking down rivals, no one is questioning it.

A nice challenge to bring some more written fluff to the game.

PLEASE NOTE - this is NOT the 3rd Official YakTribe Competition - That will be announced sometime this weekend (and is Scenery related this time).

Good luck to all who enter this one though.

There is no set format other than
1) definately keeping it bellow 500 words (the laspistol example is 455, the machette 205),
2) adding tittle of the item (not an edgy title of the plot as it will make voting time easier)
3) for clarity list what common item is (eg machette is a 5 cred knife) even if it appears obvious to the entrant. (Crewman las/snub las/ snub laspistol is a laspistol)

Otherwise you are free to present the information in whatever way you like, i went more for a ' primer' approach

@BeardLegend and @Gorkamunda, glad you guys got a laugh. That being said, there's over two weeks left: that's a lot of time to get some goods submitted. The hardest part for me was tying it into canonized fluff, to which I can thank The Warhammer 40K Wiki. The information just happened to fall into place and the sillier side of the story came from that.

I must say i'm a little disappointed no one picked up and commented on the easter egg i left in each of my sample examples

... and we now have a second entrant.

A twist in that its actually two common items sold in unison (if i read it right).
I 'm allowing it, as it displays true necromunda cunning in following rules to the letter and wiggling through a wretched loophle :p
I took the liberty of adding a title which i can change if beardy needs to correct me on the particulars of his merchantise

lol ... Thanks Santos.

A bit of real life background? I knocked up a batch of these for my Orlocks in the event that they ever make it far enough to warrant the additions. The "graphs" and images on the side will be painted to represent their first wounding hit (in-so-far as that's actually possible).

They weren't intended to be matched pairs (One of my juves, Low Key got the "prototype" pistol alone) ... though my Orlock Leader has both ... So ... why not? Sounds much cooler... I am ever guided by the Rule of Cool and having a matched pair sounds like one of those "mine's bigger/better/shinier than yours" mentalities that prevails amongst gang-type egos ... and you know ... People in general. Will add some good fluff to my gang ... and I love Bolters.

I enjoyed writing something that wasn't spread over a million pages and gave me brief respite from the Demons that run around inside my dome. (Hears Chainsaws and Screaming).
