The theme for YakComp #60 as decided by electronic coin toss is:

Followers & Familiars!

A character paired with a companion of some kind: creature, construct, spirit, pet, or attendant. The duo should feel connected in role or personality. Whether supportive, symbiotic, or decorative, the relationship is the heart of the piece.

You have until midnight on the 1st of Feb! That's an extra week on the usual 6 because of possible Christmas disruption. Usual caveat, actually about 7am on Monday 2nd UK time.

Usual rules apply except where they don't.

Have fun!

60! Yes, really! It barely feels like any time since I was setting up no. 50.

I call on @Fold, @Narflung, @katfezza, @Tiny, @rustedchrome (1s, 2nd & 3rds) and @MedMos (fastest) to submit theme suggestions for Comp 60.

It's going to be a few to pick from so I'll probably allow 2 votes each in the poll. Lots of excellent ideas to choose from in the Brainstorming thread if those inspiration nodes aren't firing.

Once they're in I'll set the poll up.

Tools of the Trade
focus on the specialised roles individuals fulfil: artisans, technicians, medics, handlers, operatives - any character defined by their craft, kit, or occupation. The model should clearly embody what they do, whether through equipment, bearing, or purpose.

Lifted from @Fold's suggestions in the brainstorm thread.

My suggestion is:

A Dog is Not Just for Christmas!

A mini for whichever system with their pet (or pets) of choice. Whether it's a Necromunda ganger with their faithful cybermastiff, or an ork with their bestest squig, or even a Man o War Bretonnian ship with a pegasus rider. Something animal handlery.

I’ll go with this one this time… someone might be able to get some warhammer quest mileage from it which would be timely.

From box to Tabletop
Paint one or more models taken directly from a board game - any setting, any style. The aim is simply to bring a game piece or pieces to life with colour, character, or creativity. The theme is all about celebrating neglected plastic in a box and turning it into something tabletop-ready.

Oooooh, I like that one. I have stuff from the 90s Warhammer Quest needing painted. And a Fallout boardgame. And I was meant to be painting my copy of Space Hulk this year but only got as far as the first squad and half the stealers...

Hope this one wins. I picked up my old Heroquest from my parents a couple of weeks ago too.

“Converts Need Not Apply.” Create a group of characters that are stock models. No conversions

Question/comment:

I was understanding directly from a board game to mean no conversions allowed in Fold's case too. If that's right, then one of these is basically a sub-set of the other. That is, the latter allows anything (board game or not) so long as it hasn't been converted, while the former would be an unconverted model that has to be taken from a board game (WHQ, Blood Bowl, etc).

This isn't an objection to both of these being possible choices. Perhaps some prefer the more open option and some the more restricted theme. Mainly I just wanted to check whether I'm correct in understanding the former to exclude conversions.

That wasn't my intention, perhaps I should have excluded the word "directly"....

Just board game figures. If you want to convert them then go for it (I did with some of the old hero quest, for example - just to bring them up to date slightly).

In the interest of being totally unique and original I've come up with this competition theme totally off the top of my head and unaided:

Followers & Familiars
A character paired with a companion of some kind: creature, construct, spirit, pet, or attendant. The duo should feel connected in role or personality. Whether supportive, symbiotic, or decorative, the relationship is the heart of the piece.

So far I have ideas for all the themes so I don't mind which one we get.

I also have a Heroquest set ready to paint... and some more Warhammer Quest 1995 expansion characters... and Space Hulk 2014...

Not sure I can choose between them. Let's pick a different theme.
Just for you. Or me. Or anyone.

If only it gets suggested.

Last call for a theme suggestion from @rustedchrome!

I'll put the poll up on Sunday with whatever we have in.

Holy moly, many apologies for the delay!! The holiday season is upon us and what hobby time I get has been spent with my oldest son, whom is also a miniature and gaming nut that I keep encouraging to join the YAK.

I really want to say, I get a lot of enjoyment from just being part of these competitions. You all are fantastic people from my side of the computer screen.

That said, I've been watching a lot of early 80's Fantasy and Sci-Fi(ish) flicks lately, things like Bakshi/Frazetta's Fire and Ice, Sorceress, The Warrior and the Sorceress, Heavy Metal, Clash of the Titans and the Conan movies so I'll say:

Build Something Inspired by an early to mid 80's Fantasy or Sci-Fi flick.

I will admit though, a couple of the ideas already presented are fantastic!

Poll up, closes next Monday morning and can launch straight into the comp. If it's a draw we'll work something out. Can vote for up to 2 since there are 6 submissions.
