Comp 62 - Classic Ruined Corner

But yes, I too have a supply of them. A worryingly large supply.

I bought a massive bundle of them at a crafts store and have been slowly using that up for a while, but it's missing the thrill of the minor misdemeanor, y'know?

I bought them from a crafts store too, thinking I will use them for so much stuff. There useful when I need them but I don’t use them nearly as much as I thought I would.

Started working on my entry. It’s made of artists cork, and is pretty much the leftovers from all the terrain I was making with this stuff at the turn of the millennium. I went looking for more, but the local art supply stores don’t carry it anymore.

Progress on the 3D sculpting. This is based on one of the original 2nd edition 40k cardstock ruins. Will try to get it printed tomorrow.

We just got another 3D printer at work, an Anycubic Kobra X that can print in four colours. That's not something that's super relevant for most of my projects, since I'll probably be painting things by hand, but it might turn out useful for stuff printed for my gaming club. Plus, it has a larger print bed, which is always useful for terrain.

Finally making some progress.

I will probably do 4 for this comp but I have over ten altogether planned, measured and ready for assembly.

By flipping short corners inside of taller corners I can make floors within the bouilding. I am using foam sheets to make the floor and hinge.

Some next level terrain engineering going on here! Reminds me of when I planned a “hive in a box” that would start as a cube and fold flat to a fully featured battlefield (of course this never got beyond a very basic cardboard maquette).

Anyway, I have begun my ruined corner journey. I’ve decided to take the route of a literal recreation with modern terrain building sensibilities, so I began with an embiggened printout of one of the 2nd edition ruins to use as a stencil.

Then it was all about layering different thicknesses of high density foam sheet, more or less following the pattern dictated by the printout.

I don’t know if it’s too apparent from these images but probably the most notable thing I’ve done here is lean the ruin over in two planes. I got to thinking that for being ruined hellscapes, i don’t know if I’ve ever seen a ruined building in 40k that isn’t standing dead upright.

As you can see most of the basic construction work is done now, it’s really just missing the segment of upper floor after which I can add more detail (damage, rubble and detritus) and start to prep the surface for paint, most likely with some sort of plaster based mixture - details to be worked out in due course!

You could push a cocktail stick though the corrugated section into the bottom bit and maybe pass it off as a bit of exposed rebar which would at least offer it a bit of further reinforcement in the real world as well as in-universe.

Just a thought. Hope you don’t mind.

Good suggestion. I’ve put a sealing layer on to try help. I was also thinking of cocktail stick window bars.

Ok, think I’ve finished up my Classic Ruined Corner. This is a piece of 11th Hour terrain (chaos cult of Malal). Used a couple of posters from the tribe to fancy it up. These were actually a pain to stick to the cork as the surface isn’t exactly flat.
