Despite the heat (or maybe because of it, since I'm staying inside more) I got the two ruined corners you get in the City of Ash box. The banner is painted in the colours of the Empire province of Hochland and decorated with an AoS transfer, so mixing game systems there. 😉

The eventual goal is to get a full board of terrain usable for Mordheim, and this is one small step on the way.

Done! As recommended above, after base coats I proceeded to SLOP IT BROWN - and then used the "reductive technique" a.k.a selectively removing the brown slop with clean brush and cloth. Unfortunately I ignored any sense of "less is more" and went with an overly liberal application of very dark brown slop, with the result being that the ruin ended up much more aged and decrepit than I'd intended. But I rolled with it and added moss effects and some undergrowth to hopefully suggest a ruin well underway to being reclaimed by a jungle.

As usually goes with these competitions, I get all fired up when the theme is announced and do a bunch of brainstorming and dry fitting things together early on, and then proceed to ignore the project until the day before the comp closes!

Added to the excitement this time for me: After a healthy coating of black spray primer yesterday, I left the work-in-progress outside to dry while I took the juves to the pool for a quick dip. Turns out 3D printed plastic warps in the sun - even here in Canada! Nothing like having to tear your entry apart the day before and rebuilt it on some fresh - less warped - tiles :(

ANYHOW....

I've been wanting to build modular board for a while, and cut down a few dozen of these lovely 30cm squares to try it out. This competition gave me a great reason to actually build a tile!

What's better than a ruined corner? FOUR ruined corners - in this case, making up a Genestealer cult "Bar". I imagine using this for a custom scenario where the defender has captured an enemy fighter and the attacker needs to reach the staircase in the bar to enter a gallowdark style claustophobic "secret lair beneath the seedy bar" board for a super-sized rescue mission. I even populated the tile with a number of "NPCs" to add some flair, including a bartender, bouncer, beggar, club girls and a street preacher - they're only primed at this point, but will get them painted up and based over the next few weeks. So many plans, so much procrastination....

Build is probably 75% 3D printed (PLA and Resin), and the rest scrap bits from terrain kits and other projects. Happy to share links to what I used if there are any bits you're interested in. Had a TON of fun building this - looking forward to making more tiles!

@trollmeat could you upload a single picture of your favourite angle of your techno-corner for the voting post please? I have tried getting a screenshot from your insta but I'm having a hard time getting one that does it justice.

You guys are awesome - I am SO honoured to be on the podium amoungst so many great entries!

(And also happy to get what is hopefully the first of MANY board tiles done :)

Like @Stoof , I'm away on vacation for a bit (yay!) and won't be online consistently for a few weeks. So that I'm not holding anything up on the theme-selection vote for next round, here is my pre-emptive Comp 63 Theme Suggestion:

Overbuilt & Under-Tested
Some problems require ingenuity. Others require an extra engine, three more gun barrels, an improvised plasma reactor - and a complete disregard for the manufacturer’s warnings! Build a character, vehicle, machine, terrain piece or small scene displaying reckless and excessive over-engineering. An over-armed or augmented fighter, a vehicle that prioritizes power over steering, a garage-built scrap war machine or an unnecessarily complex contraption... It doesn't need to be large, but its creator’s complete lack of restraint should be prominent. Add more power, more armour, more moving parts and some features that no responsible engineer would have approved - What could possibly go wrong?
