For all the scenarios in Dark Uprising and/or Book of Ruin, it doesn’t seem to specify a max number of tiles as it should according to the battlefield setup rules? (and as all the Zone Mortalis scenarios in the main Rulebook do.) What is the “default” number of tiles? 4 since that is what comes in the plastic tile set and is close to what the mat is?

Also weird they don’t even acknowledge the mat that comes in the box. Like some short rules on just placing walls and such if using mat.

Yeah, I noticed this. Assume you just take it in turns until you run out of tiles....we'll probably use same rules as doors for the tiles perhaps? E.g. place at least 3 tiles, as soon as someone decides not to place a tile, the other player(s) can place one more. That would guarantee 4 tiles minimum a game.

The same is also true for all the other Arbitrator Scenarios in the other Books. At least for the Standatrd ZM Scenarios in the Necromunder: Rulebook the number of tiles are specified. Maybe you could use these as a refence (it is between 4 and 7).
For most of the Arbitrator Scenarios we create a ZM Board as we see fit for the scenario (i.e. we ignore all the Set-up rules from the rulebook for them).

There's never any consistency with how scenarios are written! After 5 books, GW decided to introduce rules saying each scenario should specify how many tiles are used. No scenario before or after that abide by those rules. That's not a valuable rules, when not followed?

Note that because you get a 2x2 play mat in the box, or 4 plastic tiles in the other box, in no way indicates this is the preferable size. This is only included because it's cheaper than giving us anything more. The goal with the box is to give players an arbitrary "minimum" content to play.

I've played a fair amount of games on tiles / 2d / ZM, and in my experience, games run well on 2x3, 3x3 or 3x4. You could go up to 4x4, but it's a little bit excessive? You could also play 2x2, and a few scenarios even specify they can be played on this low amount of tiles, but it will be a very small battle.

To summarize, you need to experiment with different sizes and find out what works for you!

Yeah, best solution is for the players to make a fun board with what they have available. The so-called "set-up rules" are shoddy and doesn't improve much to the experience.
