Sooo, I tend to agree with your RAW interpretation:
- boss with carapace projects I2, even if boys also have a carapace & thus I1
- boss without carapace projects I3, even to boys who would have a carapace and thus I1.
Kinda want to build a close protection team around my boss with carapace now
