Digital Kitbashing

I posted these up on the 3d printing page on Facebook. Figured I'd share them here. I am pretty obsessed with the ash waste inclusion of "dirtbikes" as it lets me finally play "biker gangs" like I always wanted to (always being when I got into necromunda in '95). The only issue I have is that GW doesn't have any models for me to buy, so it's off to the kitbash I go. I could get the GSC dirtbikes, but other than for the GSC and maybe helots, they just don't seem to have the "Flavor" of the gangs. So, since I have a 3d printer, I figured I'd give it a go. Along the way, I discovered that with a little practice, I was able to utilize Blender (free 3d editing software) to kitbash the files before printing, which since resin is not the most fun medium to work with, turned out to work really well. Anyway, time for the slideshow.

I started with the Orlocks , but didn't really like how they turned out (I play Orlocks, so I'm very picky over them) so I decided to try some others and come back to them when I'm happier. Here's some looks at my first attempts.

So I moved onto Goliaths ( a gang I put together for my brother when he visits)

These came out much better. I like the idea that Goliaths ride something that will survive a collision with another bike.

I moved on to Enforcers. I have been printing a Female enforcers gang since my girlfriend was interested in playing them. (side note, my new campaign is almost half female. Never expected to have any female players when I started, so interesting turn of events).

I learned a bit along the way and my most recent endeavor was to make some Van Saar bikes (grav bikes of course).

So, let me know what you think. I got a good response on facebook with some of these, and I'm even considering doing a series of Youtube videos on how I made some of these. Sadly, the STL's I used are a mix of free and purchased ones, so I can't put up a shop, but I'd be more than happy to help anyone interested in them to make their own. Maybe I could do kind of a Bob Ross style show, "The joy of kitbashing" LOL. Well, let me know what you think. There are more images in the Gallery.

I appreciate it. I tried to give each one a bit of personality. For the Enforcers, I laid the shields across the front of the bike and a maul on the side, my idea being that they could "switch out" depending on the situation. Kind of a fast reaction force. For the Goliaths I imagined the bikes were modified "forklift" style vehicles. Just souped up for speed with the "forks" replaced with a ram bar and blades. The Van Saar I wanted to make it look high tech but pragmatic, leaning into the "sci fi grav bike but practical" aesthetic. Orlocks, well, I just wanted wasteland choppers for the space bikers.

I like the look of these a lot. I especially like the looks of the Goliath bikes. The maulers that GW put out just looked silly to me. Yours look positively brutal, which I imagine Goliaths would love.

Have you considered trikes for the Orlocks? Like the old squat trikes from ages past. I think that fits their aesthetic very well.

Have you considered going into unknown territory with a Delaque design? Considering the amount of griping I’ve seen about their lack of ash waste vehicles, they could be very popular.

I have a few ideas for the Orlocks, I like trikes, but I feel like that might overshadow their quads and I like having both. My next project is gonna be either Delaque or Cawdor (I am starting a campaign soon with two new players using those gangs) After that I'm gonna do Eschers, which will be wierdly hard since I already have great STL's that fit them, so it won't really be changed much. After that I'll probably double back to Orlock, then I was thinking Squats and corpse grinders just for funsies. I probably won't touch CGC since the dirtbikes from GW are pretty dead on in my opinion. I did see some cool files for possible Ogryn gangs, but that would be down the way. I will likely move on to vehicles after that, but I want to really nail down my Blender skills more before I try bigger prints. Small prints are very forgiving in that a failed one doesn't waste that much resin or time.

Bit of an update. After looking into starting a Youtube channel, it was suggested to me that an easier way would be to use Twitch and stream my feeble attempts to use blender. If anyone is interested I will be recreating the Goliath bikes first since they drew a whole lot of attention. My channel is called "Joy of digital kitbashing" and I will likely stream wednesday or thursday this week. I might mirror it to youtube later, but hopefully this will help those who want to recreate the same thing. Or in the very least you can laugh at my ramblings about necromunda, either way, sorry for the shameless self plug.
