Hello, and welcome to my confused, jumbled, (and likely very slow) chronicling of my hobby works. I grew up on the GW of the mid-90s (started with 5th edition WHFB) and have been in and out of the hobby ever since. I am a very slow painter so have gravitated towards the specialist games ever since Mordheim came out. I have a large number of Merheim warbands kicking around, and a decent collection of the 4 original races for Battlefleet Gothic. When Specialist Games was shutting down, I made a large purchase of the Escher gangers that I had admired since playing in my neighbor's basement in middle school. I promptly had a kid and they sat in a box for a decade...

Anyway, I was gifted the Goliath from the Necromunda re-release and this re-ignited my love for that game system. I still don't have many of the Escher painted, but I did bash out an Orlock gang from some Catachans and am working on the Goliath. I also have been putting together terrain for the game. I've finally reached a point I can (almost) fill a table and had a game last night that inspired my to start a blog in the hopes of continuing momentum.

Likely I will get around to some of the other systems in time (I have a lot of Brute Ramships still bare metal, and an Orc warband to paint, and that itch to start Gorkamorka...)

Anyway, a few pics to kick things off:

The first piece I did after a long hiatus, a water still.

Some shipping containers and a fungus planter.

I had to start with a Sumpway. I didn't feel my skills were up to the standards of Hive Guys yet.

Even underhivers need a distraction after a hard gang fight.

Most of the collection so far.

Welcome, and may I just say it’s lovely to see the old skills being used, non of this new fangled malarkey built from junk it is ❤️

Having finished my latest terrain piece (the red tower you'll see in some of the photos) I decided I had enough terrain to set up a game. This proved a little optimistic, as the deployment zones ended up mostly empty but as neither gang had any long range weaponry it worked out.

I use NCE, although its a slightly older version I had printed and spiral bound. I made a few edits as updates came out, but honestly can't be bothered to reprint it as most of the changes were minor. I also grew up with the original box set, so I never liked the house weapon lists and don't use them. My Goliath juve came with a laspistol, yet that isn't on the list. What insouciance we play with here in Alaska.

The Caution Stripes, an Orlock gang led by the notorious Paco faced off against the recently created Goliath Sump Taters.

View media item 119448The Caution Stripes, accompanied by their albino ratskin Second Best. (Where did I put my ratskin models? I will have to go box diving.)

View media item 119449The Sump Taters, who were to suffer the curse of bringing unpainted models to the table.

Being massive underdogs (by 156 points) the Sump Taters rolled up a Gang Fight and then won the roll to deploy first.

View media item 119450The Taters took the left side of the table. Snap, Crackle, and Pop set up on the red tower gantry ready to rush across on the top floor. Butch and the juve Todd deployed below them. The leader, Mr. Dash took the juve Shrimp under his wing to head through the middle on the ground floor. The heavy Boomer and Tony set up behind the silos ready to make the long climb to the top.

On the Stripes' side, Steve and Clark took cover by a small shack ready to dash through a gap in the fence. Ned with his shotgun and the juve Fonzerelli set up on the water still ready to dash across the bridge. Paco, the juve Wild Bill, and Twinkle Toes prepared to cross the open gantry with cover from the heavy Chubs. Down on the right flank Charlie and Second Best set up on the ground floor ready to move for a maze of cover.

View media item 119451The Stripes won the roll to go first. Steve and Clark ran through the gap in the fence, with Ned and Fonzerelli clanging overhead on the bridge. The large group ran for the only cover, a pile of pipes on the gantry. Leaping and sprinting like prey being chased by a ripperjack, Second Best made an incredible 16" move to cover (he'd rolled both sprint and leap as skills). Charles tried his best to keep up.

View media item 119452The Taters turn began with Boomer and Tony starting the long (12" high) climb to get into a position their weapons would bear. Snap, Crackle, and Pop climbed the last of the tower and pounded down a gantry which sagged and groaned under the weight of the three Goliath. Butch and Todd ran to the edge of the shipping container, ready to leap down the next turn. Dash and Shrimp ran along the edge of the container below them.

View media item 119453Steve splits left while Clark moved up behind the stairway. Spotting Shrimp running towards him, he stopped in a spot to fire next turn.

View media item 119454Ned and Fonzerelli dashed down the last of the bridge and took cover at the top of the stairs. Bill makes it off the gantry, with Paco and TT close behind. Chubs sets up behind the pipes on the gantry, firing a grenade at the advancing group of Taters. Luky for the precariously perched gangers, the shot goes wide and disapears into the darkness. Down below, Second Best goes on overwatch to provide cover as Charlie runs to catch up.

View media item 119455Boomer hops off the lader at the lower silo, while Tony keeps climbing. Todd easly leaps onto the top of the container below, running into the building and taking cover behind a pool table. Stunned by the juve's display of acrobatics, the ganger Butch fumbles and lands flat on his back below. (This should have been recognized as a sign of the terrible luck Butch was about to have.) Urged on by the passing grenade Snap, Crackle, and Pop run off the gantry for what cover they can find on top of the tower.

View media item 119456Shrimp, recongizing the danger ahead runs for the cover of a Rat@Louis' food stand. Hearing his warning, Dash moves up firing his plasma pistol towards Clark to no effect.

View media item 119457Seeing Mr. Dash firing wildly, Second Best fires off a snap shot with his lasgun but only hits the columns in the way.

View media item 119458On the middle floor, Ned sees Todd enter the building. He raises his shotgun and fires off a scatershot round. Todd ducks the singing pellets just in time. Fonzerelli runs up to the cover of a pillar while Todd is distracted by the shotgun blast.

View media item 119459Steve comes around the left of a bulletin board too quickly to fire off a shot at the approaching Goliaths. Clark fires at Shrimp, but only hits the side of the food stand.

Over on the right, Chubs fires his grenade launcher again at the three Goliath on top of the tower. He misses, but only slightly. All three are caught in the blast. Two of the Goliaths are pinned. Paco fires off his plasma pistol at the third, but misses. Bill and TT continue running to get on top of the building before the Taters can recover.

View media item 119460Tony heaves a sign of relief as he finally crests the ladder. This turns to joy as he see Chubs in the open. Raising his bolter he shouts "stop shooting my friends!" Unfortunately the excitement and the long climb render him unable to aim and he sprays wildly. (Rolled a 1 on the perfect shot! Darn.)

View media item 119461Below Dash and Shrimp seize the opportunity to rush into combat. Dash obliterates Steve with 4 wounds (as well as Steve rolling dead in the post-game). Frak U Steve! Shrimp only fights to a stalemate. Snap manages to unpin Crackle, but Pop is too far away and just lays there. Snap and Crackle race across to the top of the main building. Likewise, pinned by his fall Butch just drags himself towards Todd who is firing his laspistol wildly over the top of the pool table.

View media item 119462Boomer spots Ned in the open on the floor below firing at Todd. Smiling he loads a fresh frag round into his grenade launcher, raises it to aim, and pulls the trigger. The weapon explodes blowing him out of the game. (What a disaster. An exploding frag round is only strength 2, but he rolled a 6 to wound followed by a 6 on the injury table!)

View media item 119463Bill charges up the ladder into Snap, while TT charges Crackle. Paco can only make it up the stairs as he waits to see which combat needs his help. TT fights to a standstill, while Bill the juve manages to get a flesh wound on the Tater ganger. In the building Ned moves to the ledge to fire down at Mr. Dash but the pellets go wide. Fonzerelli charges Todd, and the juves fight to make a name for themselves. Fonzerelli comes out ahead sending his bolt pistol into Todd's stomach (3 wounds, ouch). Charlie makes a run towards Clark, seeing he is soon to be outnumbered. Second Best fires off a shot at the now standing Butch, but misses.

View media item 119464Butch hefts his massive axe, grinning as he finally gets to charge into combat. The juve however has the high ground, which is just enough to send his knife butt down onto Butch's head. (Fonzerelli won by 1, wounded, rolled a 6 on the injury, and to make matters worse Butch rolled captured in the post-game. He'll have to be sold to the Escher for that embarrassment.)

View media item 119465Down below the Taters do better. Dash charges into the combat with Shrimp and Clark. However, he fumbles and loses. Luckly Clark didn't wound. Distracted by the fumbling Dash, Clark doesn't see Shrimp stab him in the back and everything goes black. Unfortunately for the Taters, that was the end of their luck. Up above Snap is murdered by the juve Wild Bill (rolled dead post-game) while Twinkle Toes takes out Crackle. What is with the Goliath dying to Juves?

View media item 119466Sensing the end is near, Ned and Fonzi fire down from above while Charlie opens up with his bolter at Shrimp and Dash. Shrimp goes out and Dash goes down.

View media item 119467Up above, Bill, TT and Paco dog pile Tony. Tony is able to fend off Bill, takes out Twinkle Toes, but goes down to Paco. Luckily Tony's last act prevents them from losing one of their territories. On their next turn, the remaining Goliaths bottle.

Post-game, Snap and Steve roll up dead. Butch is captured while Clark suffers an Old Battle Wound.

With all the Tater mashing, a number of the Stripes level up. For his brutal close combat display the juve Fonzerelli gains +2 Attacks. TT gains a wound, and the rest gain WS or BS. The Goliath juve Todd rolls snake eyes for any skill table, chose Techno hoping for Specialist but ended up with Medic. I guess seeing Butch and Snap go affected the sentimental juve. He'll have to toughen up if he wants to be a ganger with the Sump Taters.
Here the Goliaths would normally restart, having lost 2 gangers. However, they rolled up an amazing two Archeotech Hoards! Risking a 3d6, the lone standing gamer Pop manages to bring in 90 credits. They'll tough it out in the hopes they can recover their income quickly. Leaving the weakling Butch to a life in the Orlock mines, they decide not to rescue him. Abandoning hope for a second heavy, they pay out their stash to replace Butch & Snap.

The Orlocks sent the captured Butch to work in their mine, and visted their holestead. Second Best went out to scout for new territory, but never returned. (Such a pitty losing those movement skills. Oh well, there is always another Second Best at the local watering hole).

Of note in the rare trades the Orlocks rolled up an Autorepairer. Giving up on replacing Steve they make the trade. To make up their numbers, they find another ratskin and effectionately dub him Second Best II.

Nice table already! But I agree that a bit more clutter wouldn't hurt. Looking forwards to the Hive Guys. ;)

I did say I was slow.

Much of the last month was taken up by a trip to Iowa for hot air balloons.

I did manage to paint three Goliath gangers. Hopefully this ends their curse of the unpainted. Bring on the curse of poor dice!

I also dabbled a bit in Black Seas. I bought a lot of these when they came out, but they rarely make it to the top of the hobby pile due to the frustrations I have with rigging.

This week we have a few orc boyz for Mordheim. These have been sitting in a box for at least 2 years. I got them from a friend and didn't notice he hadn't cleaned mold lines off them until I had started painting them. Oops, oh well they're done and I'm not scraping it back off to clean them up.

I have 90 of those in my O&G army for FB and they do indeed stem from the age of horrible mould lines everywhere. The anatomy is also somewhat questionable. Nice work on the checks!

Yeah, the mold lines across knuckles from that era I could never get clean. I could have done better along the arms though if I had noticed.

This is my first of the Black Seas using the metal sternplates and figureheads. This one at least didn't go together as well as the generic plastic pieces. I had quite a gap at the bow. But as they're for gaming and not display I doubt its noticeable from 3' away. Because this is the Indy on a 5th rate hull, I used 3rd rate masts and sails to try and make it appear larger. Little did I know the ratlines are not just larger but at different angles so had a very hard time getting them into place. I may try doing a quarterdeck out of plasticard some day, but for now its painted and I have a dozen more that are not.

Finally got around to putting a brush to models. Someone in my local group expressed interest in a Mordheim campaign so I finished a troll and three more goblins for the slowly growing orc warband.

Here's the band in its current glory

I also figured out how I wanted to base the Black Seas models. Most of my non painting time over the last few months has been working on those. I even managed to convince a friend to try out a game.

In preparation for teaching some friends how to play Battlefleet Gothic I pulled out my fleets to inventory what I had. I still have a few that are just primed so I started painting a few of them. Hopefully I can come close to matching the 25 year old paint schemes on some of these.

I still have my starter box in a closet, and picked up a second set of the card templates when I bought the Eldar off a friend. I only ever played with the four original fleets, although I added a few of the ships from Armada into them. Most of these are the original metal (or plastic for the Imperial/Chaos cruisers) but I supplemented in a couple of places with 3d prints when the prices started climbing to outrageous levels.

My Chaos fleet. This was my largest until I scored a few lots on ebay and the Imperials took over. They were the fleet I always played back at release.
Two Slaughters, two Carnage/Murder, an Acheron, a Styx, a Devastation, a Repulsive Grand Cruiser, and a Desolator escorted by 3 Idolators and 3 Infidels.

I only had the four cruisers that came in the starter box until I started trying to balance the fleet out. I ended up getting a few lots that sent them way over in points.
An Emperor and a Space Marine Battlebarge, a Strike Cruiser, Overlord, two Lunars, a Gothic, a Dominator, a Dictator, and one of each Dauntless variant. Escorted by six Swords and eight Cobras. Also pictured are a bunch of 3d printed transports.

I bought these from a friend around 2014 and repainted them. He had converted the jetbike for a store competition, so I run it as an Aurora.
Void Stalker, Eclipse, Shadow, the converted Aurora, five Hellbore (two still white), three Aconite, 8 Nightshade (two still white), and three Hemlock. And a 3d printed transport.

A primed and unassembled Ork battleship, two Kill Kroozers (one in a bag), a Terror Ship, three 3d printed Savages, three painted Ravagers and 3 more in the blister, and a whopping 18 ram ships (8 are still in the bags).

And for those who may be Battletech fans, the box I found the Void Dragon in also had my ancient Atlas. Along with a Fafnir and Firestarter that were used in a mercenary campaign/RPG game my roomates and I played in college.

Construction of the Iowaaagh was started seven centuries ago. The Meks, excited by the construction of their first Terror Ship laid grandiose plans for an even larger vessel. Work began converting a craft from the lines of Gorbag's great battleship into those of the Dethdeala. While conversion of the soopa enginz seemed straightforward, it was beyond the Meks' abilities at the time. Set aside, the horde drifted to other conquests. Then the Great Plague descended and the missive hulk was forgotten, adrift in the bin of bitz.

A recent frenzied construction of three Savage Gunship led to the rediscovery of the ancient vessel. The new generation of Meks took up the Great Werk. Banging thumbs, cutting grots, and an unfortunate incident welding together many of the deft ork laborers finally led to the completion of the great battleship. Now she sails off with the Savages to join the rest of the fleet. To Waaagh!

I do love some bfg, will hopefully be playing some at mankymeet. My daughter recently painted up a necron fleet, you just need some of those, a few nids and some tau for the set lol you know you want to
I do have a few gaunt models I have been eyeing to convert into a small nid fleet. Necrons and Tau I would have to win a lottery to ever possess!

I think I would convert some Dark Eldar before I dabbled with Tau. None of my fleets are very ordnance heavy to make a good game vs Tau.

I do like the original metal aesthetic over the Forge World versions.
