So I'm interested in getting into Blood Bowl. I've never played but remember the original game coming out.

Tempted to play Nurgle's Rotters. Any thoughts on if this is a good or bad team to play?

I’ve yet to have a game of the new BB, being a very casual player, but there is an incredibly large international following for BB. My buddy Mike has recently been to Italy for a championship so I have no doubt you’ll find plenty of people to play, and enjoy it immensely.

I believe the Blood Bowl NAF World Cup is being held in Dornbirn, Austria next year. Is that near you?

Probably. Now where in Austria is very far away!

I'd only be a casual player at this point...but yes I agree there is quite the international following for the game and a league here in Vienna.

He he, I know what you mean. I can drive from Toronto to Ottawa back home in the same time it takes me to drive from Cornwall to Scotland ... via Wales.

Nurgle isn’t your traditional beginners team so you’ll have a bit of a tougher intro (there are no starting skills that increase the team’s reliability and they will skill up quite slowly compared to other options).

But saying that I always think the important of what team you start with is overrated. For blood bowl it’s all immense amounts of fun so go with what appeals.

yeah. "Rule of Cool" is more important than what plays "better." this is a hobby, so paint what you feel passionate about. it shouldn't be a chore like "I have to finish these guys so I can win"

If going orc all the black orcs lol :D honestly I dunno I just like that model. I'm with the other guys go with what you think is cool and bugger all the rest. Sides you can still be casual and competitive.

Nurgle are a really slow starting team, but over a long period of time will develop into a really tough team and are one of the better anti-elf teams because of disturbing presence.

Lots of people find them less fun than chaos or other bash teams because a lot of their skills are based on making the other team fail rather than making nurgle succeed (such as foul appearance and disturbing presence).

Just don't expect them to outbash teams out of the box as they need to get a fair bit of block on the team before they are actually reliable.

Also I strongly recommend looking at the strategy guides on FUMBBL

So, uh, seven years later...the newest player in our (BB2020) league is a huge Nurgle guy (AOS, 40K, KT). Loving playing his Nurgle team! Psst...it's a Fouling thing.

We only talk about him behind his back.

Only because I love to quote myself...

For the record, our new guy playing Nurgle is enjoying himself partly because we decided a couple of leagues ago to make it easier for all (especially NEWB's) to start with fun to play teams.

You know how many times a team build falls just shy of "perfect" for want of 5K to 50K more gold? Well, we all start with a magical 1,050,000 gold. It works!

Also, it can be hard for NEWBS (or, anyone) to first get the right skills on the right players. Especially those just learning about SPP's, and desirable skills, and who needs'em. Anyway, to give them a leg up, we all get 2 Primary skills for the initial build. This saves Nurgle about 5 of the 10 or so games it takes for them to be truly competitive.

Yes, tournament's do this. Yes, I AM The Man who Re-invented the Wheel. But, it works, and no one complains. So, a new Nurgle team with a bit of a boost can be fun.

works well enough. The SWL on FUMBBL starts new teams at 1100TV and a preseason open "tournament" of up to 7 games to allow them to develop skills then do a redraft before the season proper.

Gives them a leg up and lets them get through a redraft process and understand some of the new rules bit that catches people up.

I shall now quote you! 😁

I think modifications like this are great - just little twists, even the skills as mentioned, because for beginners to any system what you want is to enjoy the gaming experience.

For those more hard core players (veterans) of any system they might enjoy the longer game and the progressive build up but if you’re just trying out for the first time a new system then agonisingly slow build up or potentially very fun things being kept away from you is… not fun.

To some extent I think this is what they were trying to achieve with modern Necromunda - to just get straight into the fun - but neglected to add any kind of long-term mode.

So, umm, yeah. Your Nurgle plan seems fine to me - and I say this as a non-BB player (ok, I did for a bit back in the 90s but I imagine it’s very different now).

I dabbled back then. Didn't take, wish it had. I don't think BB is substantially different now, unless you are going waaay back to the polystyrene pitch. 2016 to 2020 is just more refined. Rumors of a new version coming soon. They'd be messing with near perfection. Some kind of nonsense about a different pitch size. Like we are all just gonna toss all the pitches we all have. C'mon, Man!

starting with extra money isnt much use to goblin , snotling , halfling teams. they will have a full roster at the usual cost.
