N17 Goliath Gang WIP Log

Loving the autocannon conversion! How do the hands of the new and old Goliaths scale up against one another?
Sorry I don't know why I missed this message. I think they don't seem out of place. In the old models the hands look quite big, so using them with new ones seems to fit even better.

I've been making some advances with the Goliath gang though I'm an awfully slow painter. First of all I primed the models in black, masked the base trim and then primed them in gray and white from above. I'm not quite happy with the white priming (should have stopped with the gray one as the white spray has not a very smooth finish), however, at least it is useful to mark the light surfaces:

Once everything was ready to start painting, I started painting the heavy stubber model, but once I had almost the whole skin painted I decided to paint the whole gang at the same time (trying to know if I could increase my painting speed). So here are the whole gang bases:

And here the whole gang. I've just finished the boots and started to paint the trousers and greaves:

Hi, here it is another painfully slow update on my goliaths. After trying to paint them all in a row I realized that I was just waiting more time repainting things i didn't like than time I was saving by painting all of them at once, so I decided to paint just one of them to be sure that I liked the final result.

I should have started to test with a ganger, but I wanted to paint the leader, so he is going to be my test model... It's still half painted and I've made some mistakes (and some poor color choices) that have made me having to correct several parts so the result is not as clean as I would have liked to be. Besides the pictures don't do him justice, but I'm quite happy with the result so far.

Another update here!

I finally managed to finish my leader... They are not the best pictures neither, but at least I can call him done. Only unusual thing here is the heated metal effect on the power hammer instead of a more standard energy effect (I think it makes sense if he uses it in a factory). I wanted the hammer to look as it is heated from the inside when he uses it, and now it is getting cool after using it to smash something, so it is not very bright and it is getting darker in the edges. I'm quite happy with the result and I like to think that he lightens up his cigar with the heated hammer :ROFLMAO:.

Hope it doesn't take that long to finish the next model...

What color do you use as the base coat of your flesh tones here? I really like the flesh tones,. My Goliath have some extreme color differences from base to highlight and it just look unnatural.

The skin is one of the things I've repainted a lot, so maybe there are slight differences with the color, but I think the last version was cadian flesh as base and then lights with some mix of vallejo bone white and old rose.

Fantastic! How did you do the heat effect @Chronos ?
It is just made of layers from yellow to black. First layer covers the whole surface in a mix of yellow and orange, then several layers leaving a bit of the previous color from the center to the edges (orange, red, rhinox hide, black) and finally grey highlighting for the very edges.

Another (slow) advance, and again not the best pictures...

I've decided to paint the skin of every ganger before trying to paint in bulk the whole gang. Besides I'm trying to paint different skin tones. I'm being even more slow than usual as I'm repainting a lot to get the tone I want, so I'm not sure which colours I'm really using, but here they are the new advances:

I'm quite happy with the white skin tones, but after a lot of work in the black skin, I'm not really happy with the result:

It looks more or less good in the pictures and when looking close, but from a few centimeters away it seems like it is not painted, I will try to add some more lights, but I've already put to much time on painting him, so I think it could be a good time to assume I don't know how to paint dark skin properly...

In fact I have another ganger I've started painting with dark skin tones and I think I will repaint it to a lighter skin tone...

Another update, and as with previous ones, the painting pace has not improved, neither the photo quality (I will try to make better pics or at least try to take them with better light once they are all finished).

This time I've painted the skin of another three gangers (In fact 2 gangers and one champion) and I've tried slightly different tones. Main problem is I've used so many colours, fixed so many things and repainted so much that I'm not sure on the final colours, so that is going to be a problem if I try to use the same skin tone for other models (or when I try to paint a different magnetized weapon for an already painted one...) :(

I am not at the same level of painting as you, but this may help anyway. I experimented a lot when painting dark skin for the first time and settled on this recipe: Scorched Brown - Dark Flesh - Snakebite Leather - thin glaze of Purple Ink mixed with some matte medium. That's how I did Bebop. He looked almost yellow before the purple glaze, then the glaze dulled the tones down and brought everything together.

Thanks for the recipe @undertaker. I wanted a darker skin so I tried the recipe explained here but I don't have Gorthor Brown so I used a mix of Scorched Brown and Grey. However the miniatures in that tweet look far better than mine. I must confess mine doesn't look that bad from near, but a few centimiters away it looks like it is just painted dark brown... Maybe I'll try your recipe next time (or give up painting dark skin )

By the way, I love that Bebop miniature, great idea and awesome result ;)

I find myself tending to go heavier on the midtone and highlights just so I can see the definition of the model at arm's length, like it would be on the tabletop. But then they don't look so great up-close though. :(

Yes! That's the thing, with some figures and some colours there's no way to make them look good regardless of the distance :( I will try however to follow your advice next time and go for greater contrast ;)

your skintones are looking amazing! you have a good eye for the details... and a calm hand for the eyes too! perfect!
I think it has more to do with patience than good eyes or steady hands, but thanks for your comments!

So I finally completed the skin for the whole gang, next steps will be painting leather, armour and the rest of the details and I hope to paint that faster than skin...

My last gang members, two champions, a ganger and a juve (I don't like the old model sculpting as much as the new models but since there are no new juves...):

And some pictures of the whole gang (Only the leader is fully painted):

And finally some portraits of my whole gang:

This time it is not a painting update as I've painted very little since the last post but a conversion one. I don't like much the goliath's renderizer, so I ordered some ork weapons and tried to make my own. I've magnetized the hands so I can use the original one or one of my own and made interchangeable heads (The magnet was a bit tricky here so I've just used some pinning with two drills so it doesn't rotate).

Maybe in the future if I don't end glueing one of the options I could even use a hammer head or an axe, however, by now these are the options:

I like the rotating one, but I think it is too big, I think the one I like the most is the one that looks more like an axe, but it also seems a bit big to me... Any opinions there? Should I go for that one? Should I try to remove some pieces of the rotating one to make it smaller? Should I paint the three heads and use one of them each day :ROFLMAO:?

The chain saw head looks the best as it feels like a re-purposed tool rather than a purpose built weapon. (I've got a similar thing in my garage)
The original renderizer doesn't feel like a tool either, but I get your point there... That's the option I like less but maybe that's cause I tried to make it look like an axe... Maybe if I center where the handle joins the head (more like a spear) I would like it more, so I will try it.

My feeling is that the axe and buzz saw heads are far too big, and the chainsaw head would indeed look better if you centered the handle more.
