I'm looking to start playing Necromunda with my wife. We don't want the Corpse Grinders or Palatine Enforcers so not interested in the new set. We are also keen on making our own terrain.
We want to go with GSC and Escher. My wife definitely wants the death Maidens box set.
I haven't bought any books yet and so I'm just trying to find whatever info I can on the net. I've been looking at https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Genesteal-Cult-Download.pdf and https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/08/17/house-of-blades-building-an-escher-gang/
Are the following enough to make suitable gangs?

GSC
1. Kelemorph (Cult Alpha) 145 credits
2. 1x Aberant (can you use an Abominant or a Genestealer Broods model as an Aberant?) 95 credits
3. 2x Acolyte Hybrids both with with an extra arm 2x 85 credits + 2 x 45 credits = 260 credits
4. 4x Neophyte Hybrids 5x 45 credits = 180 credits
Total 725 credits (do I need to add any extra cost for what weapons/armour they are using?)

Escher
1. Kris the huntress (Gang Queen) 240 credits
2. 2x Death Maidens 340 credits
3. 2x Wyld Runners with whips 2x Wyld Runners with bows 4x Phelynx (unsure of credit amount...)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, what books and dice etc. will I need? Do I need Necromunda Rule Book, Book of Ruin and House of Blades? Any other books?
Will I need dice, markers and cards?

Thanks for your help and sorry for being such a noob...

My only suggestion is to look at online stores like NobleKnightGames or Miniature Market (in the US) for discounted miniatures. Gotta save where you can.
Other Yakkers can point you to other sites outside the US.

Yeah I'm in Australia. PCmarket.com.au looks to be the cheapest currently.

You want to stay far away from any official pdf (they are outdated). You should also stay clear of any books (they are short lived and poor quality). For minis, buy whatever you like and looks cool. Personally I went with the 40k battlebox for genestealers, it is enough to cover multiple options for weapons (many different heavy, special and basic weapons). For rules, cards and resources, I strongly suggest getting all that from the community.

The only thing I'd recommend is to get some dice (and templates if you don't have leftovers from 40k).

And yes, you need to purchase weapons and wargear for your fighters.

That is the NCE, based on old Necromunda. New rules compilations are a bit more hidden since it is an active product GW is making money off (you won't find public links here). Basically you have to go to discord or PM people here (in particular me). Or, I may well just PM you 😛

Not really wanting to hijack the thread, but is there a big difference between the old free pdfs for GSC/Chaos, and the Book of Ruin? I don't have the latter, nor do I intend to purchase it, but it seems to me that they are still serviceable.

There are always differences between every single publication GW gives out. Small and/or large. There are even differences between pdf version 1 and pdf version 2. Even the preview of the new Doctor Arachnos has differences between the warhammer community web article and the pdf! If you want to know the diff, I have long since forgotten it, as I usually stay up to date with the newest diff (currently N18 Escher and HoB). And forgetting all previous diffs.

Everything is "servicable". You can play N17 if you wish, even though large parts of it has changed. But you will be confused whenever you add something new. for example a new book (GW release on average 4-5 books per year) or any other new content (new characters or pdfs). And you will also cause confusion whenever you try to discuss with other players who are not also stuck on the exact same outdated version as you (either online or for example playing with new friends).

It would be much better to grab the latest community compilation, and you are guaranteed to be most up-to-date with the best quality available.

So you do need to pay extra credits for weaponry, the tools on the site here are ideal for building gangs.

In response to your question about models yes you can use the abominant (or any suitable grotesque stand in!) For a necromunda aberrant

You should def change the escher Gang. I suggest one death maiden box (some wyld runners included here) and one gang box.

Will we not get to 1000 points with just the death maidens and wyld runners? Or is it to get extra weapons and arms etc?
Also, do you guys actually cut the arms and weapons off when you want to change load out? Seems risky... I don't want to damage the model.

That box is a supplementary to Escher gangs. They are specialists / elites, not including essential fighters like the leader and gangers.

I never cut minis that are finished. If I change weapons, I swap the entire mini.

So chucking the Death Maiden/Wyld Runner box with Kria as a gang queen into the gang builder gets you this

I've assumed you'll be going needle pistol/venom claw on the death maidens, as that's what you have parts for (you can go double pistols, but I wouldn't, or double claws which would put an extra 5 points on a model) I've also assumed you'd be giving armour to your champions and leader at least.

For Kria, she comes modelled with a lasgun and a pistol, I put a hotshot on it to make it a more appropriate leader weapon.

The gang comes to 975, so you could throw some different arrows on one of your Wyld runners, or strip the hotshot pack off and give both your runner different ammo

The gang as stands is VERY close range, might do decent in a zone mortalis (the card squares) map but will get shot to pieces on a bigger table.

Much as the death runner/wyld runner box has some nice minis, the standard Escher box set gives you more options, you get 10 minis to work with and a range of longer and short range weapons to play with. Unless you're absolutely set on the new box set id recommend the gang box as your baseline for an Escher gang.

In terms of general gang building advice I would recommend the excellent "Necromonday" articles on the Goonhammer website for both you GSC and Escher gang.

Thanks for making this, that is awesome and I understand what you all mean. I think we will just start with what looks cool. I don't wanna scare my wife off by buying another box of minis to paint! Cheers all for the info. I'll suss out Necromonday on Goonhammer as well.
