Hi,
I'm trying to get started with necromunda underhive, but am really put off by the super expensive terrain. I actually like the 2d necromunda tiles from the first underhive starter set better than the new terrain (heresy I know), but it's going for crazy scalper prices on eBay. What should I do?

Hello and welcome!

First thing that springs to mind is to take a look at the work of @Draconic - particularly this instagram post, where he has taken images of an absolutely phenomenal set of 3d tiles. If you don't have instagram then I think it's around pg47 (or soon after) of his blog here on Yaktribe that you'll find a link to his WordPress site. The tile images may be available there, though I don't know for sure.

DriveThruRPG has quite a selection of sci-fi map/tile sets that could be turned into boards for Necromunda; all they'd really need is scaling/combining to make the desired area and some impassable walls marked in. Then they'd just require printing and backing.

GW tiles are mounted on hardboard that is often sold in art supplies shops, so if you can get Draconic's stuff, some RPG tiles or even find scans of tiles lurking around the internet, then printing and mounting them yourself ought to be fairly straightforward.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll be sure to check all of this out.

With the Dark Uprising Box, there was also a playing field (battle mat) printed on both sides of paper, which depicts the ZM plastic tiles.

Often offered on ebay for around 10 euros and might also be an option. I am not associated with this seller and have no own interests, but only that you can see what I mean, I have picked out any link as an example:

Now, if you ask about the tiles, I don't know if you might want to play Necromunda maybe as a board game.
If so and if you want to play necromunda as board game in 3D, you can make the walls for it very easily and simply yourself.

A well-suited material would be an insulation board made of Styrodur (XPS rigid foam board), such as those used for insulation in house construction. Styrodur (XPS) is a dense material and not like Styropor (EPS) with bubbles. They're cheap, easy to cut, and easy to work with. Somewhat decorated and painted you can achieve a very good effect with it.

Make your own boards. Way more fun and rewarding. Ignore the shiny if it's too expensive as making it can be half the joy sometimes...not all. 🤣🤣

I politely present the Trolls* work....

If you’re not using fly mesh, CD cases and tie wraps are you really making Necromunda scenery?

More links in my signature.

*Im the resident Troll, you’ll find out why.....

Foam Mortalis can look really good! Particularly with a little texture from wall filler and painted to look like concrete.

I went the MDF route myself, it’s affordable, hard wearing and looks good! It’s just a good middle ground between GWs expensive highly detailed plastic and the very cheap, made from junk route.
