N18 House of Blades (General discussion)

Well, at GW they seem to have a fetish of giving women whips. They do it a lot. So not a surprise.

You know I want to argue with you and say that the whips fit the animal trainer idea for the Wyld runners, and that they usually give whips to slavers, torturers and beast tamers in their other games but after doing a quick check through the GW website I only found two male models with whips (dark Eldar beast master and dark Eldar Kabbalist warrior sergeant) and numerous female models with them.

@almic85 oh I’m fine with the beast master theme and whips. But this is the SECOND plastic kit for Escher with whips as a weapon (and we only have two plastic kits and two unique sprues for them).

Ok, there is an Ork Runtherd as well but yeah, once you spot it, it’s obvious - it’s nearly always a woman with a whip.

Nothing wrong with women with whips but I'm not sure this is the place, I mean those battle sisters could easily have a sideline career I feel...

In all seriousness GW has always been a bit like that, overly sexualised stuff women with whips, I think they've got better cause they sexualise men somewhat as well now so its less on sided, but love it or hate it its how they do it...

Personally I'm actually a fan of sexualised stuff, because its not supposed to be real as long as both sexes are equally represented that's my only concern, but while I love Necromunda, and Warhammer I love Kiingdom Death Monster and Middara amongst others equally and they are very sexualised.

Fingers crossed my new stuff turns up tomorrow, got a message saying it should but then the tracking says Wednesday and that would piss me right off, I ordered last weekend so how could it take so long to arrive...

There's a khornate AoS character with a multi-strand whip as well but it's still a minority.

Tangentially related but outside of fantasy/mediaeval settings, bow-wielding females outnumber males, be it GW or beyond. The rebooted tomb raider games, the hunger games, the drowned earth or Escher wyld runners all take advantage of the fact that a drawn bow pose shows off a female figure easily and will grab attention. We can't know whether that factored into Escher getting the hunter archetype, but I don't imagine it hurt the case at all.

AKAIK the run there with whip has been retired and replaced with a run there with grabber stikk.

I also can’t find the Khorne guy mentioned above with a whip on the website. Plenty of ball and chains and just chains but no whips. The chaos chariot rider is male and has a whip though.

Skaven have a few as well for the clan moulded beast masters.

For the record I don’t have an issue with sexualised minis where they fit the fluff, like Slaanesh daemons and witch elves, but not every female mini has to ooze sex, just like not every male mini has to be a shirtless Hemsworth look alike.

Back on topic though my FLGS had two sets of Escher tactic cards delivered and guess who snagged a packet!!!

Now I just have to decide if I want to open them or join the lucrative scalpers market?

Noting the new theme of undead, Are The Escher whips 'sexual' in nature? Or are they included because they are easily associated with the goth/punk theme of necromunda?

Personally, as a fan of fictional archeology and growing up around stock animals, I worry when someone sees a whip and their first thought is hanky panky.

I don’t really associate whips with goth or punk so don’t really see a connection there.

The new Wyld Runners aren’t particularly sexualised and the whips are in context of being animal tamers so it works ok.

The main Escher gang whip though and the pose of the leader is a little bit more sexualised but not excessively so.

It is interesting though that the Escher get acces to shock whips while the Goliath, who have a strong alliance with the Slave Guild, and Orlocks, whose whole house are slaves except the gangers, don’t have whips. Even the slave guild themselves don’t have access to whips.

I'd argue the connection of women and archery is more down to traditional depictions of Amazons, so that's a connection dating back at least 2500 years (perhaps more, I don't recall if the Amazons in the Iliad were said to be armed with bows - their queen at least died in hand-to-hand combat with Achilleus). Certainly seems relevant for the strong independent Escher warrior-women.

Don't think they were ever associated with whips though...

Goliath should have access to pink fluffy magnacles.

Amazons were an ancient Greek fiction though, unless I'm mistaken. Had they been real, as a culture where the women were the warriors they would have used bows, javelins, swords and all the other military tech of the time. But the archery thing seems to have stuck as the focal point largely because the Greek stories claimed that they removed the right breast so that it wouldn't obstruct the draw of the bow.

Could be that I'm seeing a link that didn't exist in the designers' heads though and doing them a disservice.

I made a mistake, as the Bloodstoker is a part of the Goreblade Warband start collecting box (last of the 360° views). So a character but not really available as a character model.
I've seen him used for slave guild somewhere but with the change to how bounty hunters are equipped, he'd be an option for Escher to use as a hired gun now too. Perhaps representing an allied beast tamer.

For the use of bows in fantasy, it's probably because Guys smash, Girls shoot and bows are the primary ranged weapons in those settings.
I guess it bled into non-fantasy settings too (even though the Rambow was a thing)

The FW Chain Lord miniature (from HoC) has a Shock Whip, and the Brute Handler from the same book also has one as his only option (strong connexions with Goliath suggest his mini will be male if it's ever made). It's also an option for genestealer cultists (but it's difficult to tell what the gender of the miniature that wields it is).

The 'punk gal with whip' archetype has existed for a while. Linda Lash comes to mind, and there are maybe earlier examples.

That was true when CGC dropped, but they went ahead and gave Goliath tools to compete with them in melee, and ogryns are a thing now too.

I was hoping for something for escher on the level of goliath or CGC, with those two trivially getting like 6 high strength multidamage attacks without too much effort.
