N18 House of Blades (General discussion)

It’s really hard to tell if things have been updated or actually changed at times. Especially as they have form for mistakes and then not admitting it.

Ok I still have a lot to read, but whilst still meh compared to HoC in power levels it seems to fix a number of issues Escher had. I'm hoping HoC is the outlier here not HoB.

Cl was a terrible weakness.
Escher had really limited weapon options, esp if you looked at effective choices. Adding Boltguns, Plasma cannon, Grenade launcher, and suspensors helps level ranged firepower. Lasguns and needler and shotgun were solid choices but weren't vary punchy and if you roll badly on trade rolls mid campaign it hurts.
Likewise with broader CC options and wargear, though this is more nice options than effective power change, I do wish they had power axe not hammer for fluff & style reasons...

I'm ok with the Death Maiden rules if not fluff, it'll make for more Escher CC orientated gangs I think.
Not sure on Wyld runners. As I've said elsewhere I like the model so will include but seem pricey, hopefully I can build something cool through advancements.
Juves - still 20cr, +1 Cl +1S -1I, the only issue I have here is the limited CC section, given that you can no longer equip them from trading post or stash. So every Escher juve gets stilleto/knife and pistol? Unless throwing knives become widely used?
Sadly, my flail& pistol model is now invalid as either a juve or gang sister, and a waste of champ or specialist.

I guess I get a wyld runner starting with bow purely for TP access, then equip with a long rifle or longlas...
Or just a pistol & phelynx and buy a flail or shock whip from TP.
I think that shows how off their list choice is...
( Better BM options may be available, not used them widely in campaign yet..)

So model pics on pg110-111. Is it safe we're getting new resin weapon packs/heads? Looking at Matriarch with plasma cannon or is that likely to be resin like some others - the servo claw & shotgun and presumably rogue doc on same page? I could swear Melta gun and little sis with auto pistol are just new heads.

Feh, I'm guessing old metal juves with clubs (even the when calling the one with a slight spike on the end an axe because clubs are terrible) are also no longer legal? This is unsurprising but still makes me sad.

Common items at the trading post? Makes a good wyld runner with tools of the trade, or a (house ruled to have access) juve?

Yeah, those are good ideas. Just sad that by default two of what I think are the best metals from the old range are no longer legal. I guess this is the price of nostalgia.

Yes, beautiful models indeed! Just house rule all common items as available to everyone; it's not op and makes much more sense than artificial limitations; plus beautiful Escher, cawdor, van Saar, etc, models become fully legal even with the new limits :)

I think you've hit my biggest problem with the new "by fighter type" lists. Structurally it makes perfect sense as a way to add balance but logically in universe it makes very little sense at all. Ah well, at least one's been converted with a stiletto knife. But I did just put new paint on an axe/club girl named Trix.

Anyone else think they could have done better with the art in this book? A lot of it is re used pieces from past books. It's good art, but slightly underwhelming compared to house of chains which has awesome new single page spreads. The house of chain art has characters but with a scenic background, this new escher book still has characters just posing in front of a bland background like the gang war books. No art for the phyrr cats either. Khimerix art is the same one that's been in at least 2 other books by now.

Finally got my copy of HoB and reading through it there seem to be a boatload of GW'isms. Most have been mentioned already, but the second scenario has me very confused as to what they intend.

The sentries rules with a randomly generated single defender? It is hard to envisage a game that even gets to the alarm being raised.

I am however interested in the options for stimming models which can't themselves carry wargear - bad blood applied to Khemrix, Ambot, Ogryn or Pets seems particularly fun.

I'm thinking we're getting a set of three resin models with separate heads and weapons, and it's the Necro version of the Blood Bowl team boosters FW are already selling. Gives some more variety (in bodies in particular) without the cost of a full plastic sprue.

If it's forge world resin you mean, like, double the cost :D

I think @Bilbostomper meant less cost to GW...

Either way that would explain the duplicate/changed parts on what I thought were Resin bodies... Have we seen the same Indication for Goliath?
I do fancy thought of getting an Escher style power axe / power hammer...I like the servo claw, but might use it as a death maiden venom claw.

Not sure I can justify FW models however. I've bought Escher & Goliath Weapon packs. But balked at mini's though I do like Kria, Apollus Kage and Krotus Hark as again those kits look more interchangeable with regular bits. I've seen a lovely Kria based champ with Needle rifle. Might make a better base for a death maiden painted right...

They do show Kria's lasgun arm on one of the plastic bodies and mention parts compatibility in the book. Hopefully they're not playing this up more than it is. I'm also rather fond of the one champion we didn't see in previews even if she does have the old one foot on random bit of kibble pose. If the price on these isn't too unreasonable I'll be finding a place for her in my gang.

Yeah, I meant cheaper for GW to produce. Not for us to buy.

Also, it seems that the Blood Bowl booster packs are four models, not three, which fits well considering that we've seen artwork for a power axe and sword not represented on any model.

I disagree, the only thing our champions really gained in terms of ranged firepower was the plasma cannon and grenade launcher (albeit those are good boons).
But champions are kinda limited in number, and our gangers actually lost a lot. We're now limited to one specialist in a gang, maybe two later in a campaign if you get a lucky specialist advancement. But we're now completely locked out from using combat shotguns and bolters on our gangers, or from using large numbers of the relatively cheap and effective needle rifle.
Escher gangs have always been frowned upon for spamming lasguns, but I don't see many other ranged options for our gangers anymore.

I think the intention with that one is that the attackers are the ones set up using the sentry rules- all of the rest of the scenario rules make so much more sense that way around. It turns into one increasingly powerful fighter picking off a larger gang from stealth, with the sentries representing the larger gang combing the area for survivors from a previous fight. Pretty cool scenario that way.

Does anyone have any idea of the availability of the Wyld Bow to the Escher high ranks? I mean when you promote a Runner they would keep the weapon anyway.
I am very, very much a narrative focussed chap and am imagining some themed characters. Escher Matriarchs and Bounty Hunters with bows etc.

I'll accept gangers are more limited and lasgun spam has effectively been doubled down on. We had a campaign limit of 3 of any type of weapon. I don't think I could necessarily agree to that anymore.
I had also forgotten limiting special weapons to specialists was a house rule, before HoB

I think losing Needle rifle to gangers is a shame. I had ran a pair with needler and stilleto, it was fun trying to get the short range though too much toxin was a little weak, at times.
I suppose it also becomes an issue if restrictions practically write your list for you. I'm a big fan of shotguns esp. with acid so there's still that option.

Eh, looks like House Escher got their standalone boltguns from a 'misplaced' Enforcer crate... (they are Am 4+ according to House of Blades). Too bad the gangers can't wield one.
Maybe it's time to start a thread for listing all those brand new errors and inconsistencies :cautious:

Edit: also, what are Smoke gas grenades (page 41)? And what is a Chem-syth (pages 33, 35, 37, 39)? 🤦‍♂️
