N18 House of Chains (general discussion)

I just want to say that I love the new book. So many ways to build the gang, genesmithing, all the fleshed out background! Hope every gangbook will be as great as that! 😎

Can anyone here tell me how long it may take till the rules are implemented into the yaktribe gang manager?
I would suspect that @Malo wants to see how they proceed with the rest of the updates i.e. how House of Blades turn out, before making any major changes. There’s the possibility to edit costs and stats in the gang manager in the meantime.

Spending half your starting creds on one model would be silly.

So lets spend 490:

Power axe, bolter/melta, l-carapace, armoured undersuit.

Cuts down on the number of models to paint as I also want one of each of the new guys so all I have left I can afford is two mooks with stub cannons for a whopping gang size of 5!

T5, W3, 3+ save, nerves of steel. In objective based scenarios he'll hopefully be the implacably advancing T1000. In non-objective based games everyone will just run away from his M4 ass but such is life. At least with such a small gang size he's practically guaranteed to turn up to even random selection scenarios.

Cool. Let us know how he does, certainly an interesting experiment! Anything that boosts his move should probably be your priority now.

Quick rule question: how would you guys play the Reckless storm welder in pitch black? We had the situation happen, and thought it might behave like a template, since you dont really choose who to 'hit'. Eg effectively ignoring pitch black with that weapon.

Thoughts?

The weapon trait uses the term, "eligible fighters within line of sight and range". Since Pitch Black conditions are effectively blocking line of sight, I think as a group we wouldn't ignore Pitch Black.

Personally though, assuming that there's at least one visible target (else why pull the trigger?), then I would advocate ignoring Pitch Black while working out what are eligible targets.

To me, the spare hits are the problematic bit; as the fighter chooses where to allocate them, I'd interpret that as meaning they should be assigned to only visible targets with Pitch Black taken into account, as written. But an opponent might feel aggrieved if lucky/clever positioning let you pick on a single character, plus there's all this wild electricity lighting the place up. While slowing the game up a bit, I feel a group should consider randomly determining each spare hit among all those already struck, just so that the risk of using a reckless weapon remains.

Very good points, and yes we played it with one valid target within pitch black (to pull the trigger)... but then does it ignore the other targets around, once you have shot? That sounds not in line with what I can picture of a random electric arcs weapon :)

I can't recall the exact wording of Pitch Black but if it says it limits the maximum distance for line of sight, or that only models within so many inches can be targetted, then as written all the other targets are ignored because they're not technically eligible.

Like you, I much prefer the more cinematic idea of arcing electricity going everywhere. But I think you will need the agreement of your gaming group to interpret it that way. Sounds like your opponent felt the same way as you when it happened, so that's a good start!

If you do end up with Pitch Black applying for all the targeting, do remember that you don't need to roll all three firepower dice - it's the sort of thing I forget due to many years fielding orks. No sense going for maximum risk if there's only one target.

Yep, makes sense... in the case of today's game, I definitely wanted to roll all three because my targets were an ambot 2" away and the opposing leader 6" away, about to run away and escape the pit with a winning loot casket :D

So of course I rolled a 5 to hit and 5 hits on rapid fire dice, zapped the leader OOA and properly damaged the ambot... in a way, much more cinematic than "Ah HA! RaW you cant see me so I win." ;)

Pitch black gives all fighters on the table the Hidden condition which does the below

Ranged attacks may not be made against targets more than 3" away unless the target has replaced the Hidden condition with the Blaze condition or Revealed condition (see below), or is wearing a Refractor Field.

It doesn’t actually affect Line of Sight So technically you make the ranged attack against the closest fighter then have it explode onto other fighters within line of sight.

There is at least one player in my group who would take the bit in bold and argue it means that more distant models could not be hit as they are not eligible targets.
Hopefully your group are more unified in outlook.

Which is why consensus within the gaming group is so important, and a definitive answer online so elusive.

I agree that RaW (oh how I hate this term) reckless in the case of the storm welder would not work in pitch black conditions. I think it is a mistake, and should be faq-ed, but until then it can be agreed upon within your gaming group :)

@Unslain i can see that interpretation of the pitch black rule.

You also have to read it with the Reckless trait rule that says to ignore the normal rules for target priority and randomly determine the target from any fighters within line of sight.

Blast weapons also target a spot on the board but get around the rule because the board doesn’t have a hidden token on it and is considered an eligible target.

As with most things in N17 you need to be a bit more liberal with rules interpretations to allow cool stuff to happen.

What is your opinion of the Brute Handler (50% discount for Goliaths) and the Pit Trainers (house exclusive)?

I feel like the Brute Handler has great potential, but is a huge points sink when factoring that it does nothing unless one pays for a Brute first. The "nerves of steel" aura is nice, but someone like Bigby Crumb can do it better at 5 points less. The real deal is the ability to help Brutes win XP faster, but not every brute is going to benefit. The Zerker, for example, only has Ferocity as a Secondary. It has Muscle as a Primary, but neither Tanking nor NAAARGH can help him to charge after being pinned.

House of Chains is out of stock online. Has GW done a second printing of any of the other Munda books or should I expect this to be gone for good? Cheers
