N18 House of Iron (General discussion)

Not sure if anyone else has brought this up but is there any reason to take a road sergeant over an Arms Master unless you want to start with a heavy/special weapon?

Essentially after gang creation with access to the trading post why would you take a road sergeant?

cheers

The Arms Master can only take weapons from the Pistols, Basic, and Close Combat sections so there's no access to Special/Heavy weapons for this Champion, regardless of use of Trading Post/Black Market.

Yeah, this. The Arms Master is there to kick ass and provide support to your rank & file, while the Road Sergeant is the one bringing out the big guns. I think it's a pretty neat division, actually.

Ah okay. I thought they could also take special and heavy weapons from trading post. I see now they are limited to pistols and basics. Thanks!

Road sergeants and Arms masters are extremely similar, much more so than any other gang's champion level fighters.

To put it simply, with an Arms master, you are paying an extra 15 creds for a neat little special rule. That's it. You do get an extra point of WS, but Orlock don't want to be in close combat, so that's mostly irrelevant.

The weapon selection for Arms master is atrociously bad. So if your arbitrator doesn't allow weapon swapping, you never want to hire an Arms master in your starting gang.

I quite like Arms Masters as a cheap shotgun champion with the Shotgun Savant skill.

Having a champion that is able to hit things at 16” on a 2+ with a S4 D2 gun is great. It’s even better if you buy him inferno ammo and then that same weapon gets the blaze trait.

It also helps keep the cost of your champion down so you can afford to spend a bit more on arming your leader and other champion.

They also add 2 to your crew size for the bottle roll so you are much less likely to fail a bottle test while they are on the table, which I have found is significantly more useful than giving someone nerves of steel.

Almic, you can do the exact same thing with a Road sergeant. The only difference is 15 creds and the Rule of iron.

To be honest I forgot that the road sergeants had access to the Bravado skill tree, but yes you could.

The arms masters do also have an extra WS which makes them slightly better IF you get them into combat, but Orlock don’t really want to be in close combat.

You could give them the “one punch” legendary name to make them a decent threat deterrent without spending too many creds on them, but again you don’t really want Orlock in close combat.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here. You acknowledge that Orlock don't want to get into close combat. But then you suggest that "one punch" would be a legitimate choice for a legendary name. I don't get it.

so crazy question but can the arms masters use their Rule of Iron on themselves? It reads "choose a friendly orlock fighter wthin 6" of this fighter", so are fighters "friendly and within X" of themselves" for the purpose of rules? FAQ doesn't have them or house of artifice.

To me the purpose of having a close combat fighter in an Orlock gang is to act as a threat deterrent rather than to actually do anything.

By giving them one punch it means that they have a decent chance of removing anyone that gets too close to them in close combat and it costs you almost nothing as it is free at gang creation and most legendary names are pretty bad.

It’s basically a cost effective way to take a model capable of counter charging, which adds another dimension to your gang.

It’s also significantly cheaper and more effective than gearing up your leader for close combat.
