Pretty much as the title says. Me and the crew are dusting off our old collections and painting up some gang icons trying to get ready to play the current system....and we're incredibly confused.

The House specific cards seemed intuitive enough but Ive come to understand that theres hundreds of other cards and all this talk of 'building decks'.

Im very confused. Help me out

haveing picked the cards we usually get to the end of a game and say 'oh yeh i forgot to use the cards again'

There are those that like the tactic cards.

Personally, I don't like them:
- there are too many
- if I wanted build a deck I'd go play something like Magic
- they create a lot of "feel bad moments" (some of them are busted over powered)
- they are information that isn't on the table in a table top game

If/when I do use them, I limit people to the cards in their house book and they are always random, never chosen.

There are a lot of cards. Some are universal and can be used by all gangs. Some are limited to a specific gang. You can see all of them here:

Each scenario will say how many and how you draw cards. For example choose 2 cards from your deck. Or draw 3 random cards from your deck.

There are many different ways to make a deck.
  • Preset: Use any predefined 18-card table/deck. GW make official lists for more and more gangs (and more and more settings, like Ahs Wastes). Here you get a ready-made list of 18 cards to use.
  • Custom: Select 18 cards the gang is created. 2 cards can be replaced after each battle.
  • Limited: Select 30 cards. Each card that is used is permanently discarded (for the rest of the campaign). This means that the cards available to each gang will dwindle.

Or you could do the "deck of doom", where you collect all cards in a single deck that all players can draw from. Obviously you need to re-draw if you get a gang-specific card you can't have.

Edit: And of course as @HugeSamples says, you can skip cards altogether.

It kind of depends on the group you're playing with.

In mine, we've all kind of agreed that the universal gang tactics out of the core rulebook are fine to pick in addition to the one unmodified gang-specific deck pack we each have. Come a scenario where random card selection comes up however (i.e. Border Dispute), gang tactics can only be pulled from the deck we each brought to the table (in no small part due to the fact that we don't have a universal gang tactic deck to draw from).

both goonhammer and optimal game state (websites) have suggestions how to incorporate tacticscards in a fairly fair way
(avoid a few 'broken ones', some randomization while avoiding having to pick completely useless cards)
