I'm wondering what the community thinks of using 2 nacht ghuls rather than a phantom and a nacht ghul in a starting list.

Depends who you play. Against an absolute sweatlord running a full plasma spam van Saar list, or toughness gene smithed Goliath absolutely fine, against a new player with their out of the box Orlocks it's not a kind thing to do

Once they get a cheap movement upgrade so they can charge on the turn they turn up a pair of them with group activation can utterly demolish a entire fire support base including that champion with the pricy lascannon and your plasma gun specialist. Once the Nacht ghul murder suprise, either sword or claws a little speed and even a modicum of armour, has even slightly matured it can incredibly rapidly be unstoppable and just not fun to face.

I ended up shelling out for back up Las Cutters on all my rear guard models just to have a hope of stopping them after the two Nacht ghuls pop up and cut my gang in half in a turn.

No. It's very well within the limits of the game. You can definitely still lose with two Nachghuls.

Also, if you do feel like you're going to table a newbie then the Nachtghul is actually a good unit to have because you can simply "forget" to deploy it.

More broadly I don't think that people should worry about this stuff when building lists. Because there's broadly only two kinds of players: Those who hold back to facilitate a more fun experience, and those who try their hardest to crush their opponent. If you're the former then I think you should hold back during the game, rather than in your list building. Because if you hold back during list building, you'll just get your ass kicked every time you play a power gamer.

The "is it narrative?" filter is a really crap way of determining this stuff for two reasons: Firstly, every player will have a different idea of what is narrative/fluffy. Secondly, some gangs are very powerful when you play them as inended (e.g. Corpse Grinders an Van Saar).

Yeah I wouldn't get too hung up on trying to hamper your own gang. Just play niceif you're up against a weaker player. Do whats fun for you!

Very well said, OF.
I like to build strong gangs and play hard... but I don't enjoy clubbing baby seals. It's good play to hold back if your gang is too strong for your opponent to have a fun game. In the end, I remember the times we laughed our heads off at some wild or weird outcome better than I remember any horribly lop-sided victories.
