Maybe we should do patches?

Working space to figure hammer out all the details.

Places to contact:
Medium:
  • Embroidered (traditional and easier to work with on the consumer end)
  • PVC (more freedom in the patch design, but harder to attach to custom surfaces)
  • Woven Thread (High detail, low cost)
  • Retro-Reflective (High visibility)
Funding:
  • Yaktribe coffers (don't even know if that's an option, up to Malo)
  • Kickstarter (has the benefit of knowing they'll be sold)
  • Indiegogo (flexible goals may allow some choices after the campaign)
Somewhere in there there needs to be a vote on the design.

and then there could be mini patches for Tribemeet and Yakday?
Like small ones. “Tribemeet 2020”

Maybe we should... maybe we REALLY should... with the hazard stripe trim?

Turns out this is cheaper than I thought it would be - the joys of modern computerised embroidery machines! Seems easiest to get them in the US and for full embroidery cover for a 3.5" diameter patch you're looking at ~$3 each for 50 or ~$1.80 for 100... (Picked 50 and 100 'cos that seems like a sensible volume).

@Stoof where did you look? Scifi Geeks does custom, but it costs $3 a piece when you buy 100. Still, I might push for them as I know their quality is very high and customer service is good.

youpatches.com - the US side of the company I work for has used them before for patches for shows and things, they've been really good. It's not the world's best website, but they're embroiderers not web designers. They do patches for motorbike clubs mainly. They have a handy breakdown of pricing on the site for all sorts of sizes and quantities.

I think this is a great idea. I have old work hoodies from a previous employer I need to somehow cover the logos on. Even if it costs a bit more (since the price spread is likely being $5 instead of $3 or something like that), are there any services where we could submit like 3 or 4 designs and then rather than trying to drum up 100 orders, they were just a made to order process? I'm not entirely sure how these things work.

does that patch in the top right of the samples really say “klansman”?!?

Yes - as the rank of a MC Club (hence being on a rocker)... not what you're probably thinking... unless it is what you're thinking. Who knows!

@Blood Donor - there's this one based in the EU. Whether they'd go quite as niche as us I don't know.

I don't think that just because it is a MC Club means that it isn't exactly what it looks like. I googled around a bit and pretty much everything I found referencing Klansman linked back to the Klan or were articles about white and racist gangs (not that google is always reliable, but for every hit...). I find it somewhat problematic that this site uses this as the example. The other site also has some problematic patches, but they are not the example and among a lot of other patches of all stripes (but the do seem to have a rather weird problem with music...). I'm not sure if this any sort of deal breaker for something that we are just speculating about, but it is something that we should think about.

As far as to how, first we'd have to get @Malo on board. Second we'd have to have a solid design involving the Yak. One thing we could do is an Indigogo or Kickstarter. Set the minimum amount to be whatever the small batch of the company we'd want to go with. That would mean we wouldn't have a whole lot of product sitting around. I'd be willing to help out with the manpower parts of this if it were to happen.

First off: my imagination is pretty free with other people’s time, talent, and money (as @Kiblams can attest to).

So here goes: it would be pretty sweet to have tribe shirts (as we do) for events (as was done) that includes a shoulder patch that could be modified by rockers (@Stoof ?) with things like “Coordinator” “Terrain Master” “Best Gang” “Most Kills” “Thundercube Champion” etc.

I I googled around a bit

...and now you're on a list  Ok, so maybe not them. It was just one I knew about.

I might be able to cobble together a design for consideration, by looking at the companies it seems most can translate a normal digital image into whatever language the embroidery machines use.

@Punktaku - nice idea. Rockers might be a bit expensive though - they're the big ones that go across the back of a jacket*. Do you mean little curved ones that would go above/below a normal 3.5" badge? I think they're called title tags.

*this would be chuffing epic though** - big YakTribe logo on the back of a leather jacket with a top rocker saying YakTribe and a bottom rocker with your TribeMeet "rank" or other distinguishing tag.

**until we get beaten up by a biker gang thinking we're rivals.

**until we get beaten up by a biker gang thinking we're rivals.

I imagine it would happen like this:

1%er: so you think this Yaktribe is a tough gang, eh?

Yakker: yup. my esher have the highest rating. he’s van saar, these two have goliaths, pitslaves over there, and that guy in the back has orlocks.

1%er: ...what?...

I think the logo, the one in the top left corner of the full site's home page, would be excellent, as would something of wording stating YakTribe Games, but if this evolves closer to fruition I will be measuring clothing I have to find out how big a patch I would need to cover things. That would be my biggest desire on this: doesn't have to be ultimately flashy or elaborate as long as the sizing has great functionality :)

I'd be interested... although what size remains to be seen. I love the idea of a mini patch and titles (rahter than full rockers), as we play with minis, so it makes sense out patch is mini too! :p

I'm ppoor with ideas though so I'll jsut watch is fasicnation at how vcreative you chaps are before jumping o the band at the end and buying one!
