I glued another five vikings for the comp, bringing me to ten so far.

At some point I'm doing some scenery as well, but I haven't yet settled on what that'll be.

I really like the Victrix vikings! They're great sculpts, I only have two concerns. The first is the very thin spears and swords. I guess there is a definite advantage to heroic sculpting in this regard. These vikings look awesome and realistic, but I'm afraid I'll break at least a couple of them regularly. I make gamig pieces, so they will get handled, perhaps dropped sometimes, and those spindly spears in particular won't take much of that.
My second concern is the abundance of action poses in the set. It is a minor niggle, only when you get 8 of the same very distinctive pose in a set, they start to stand out a little. But I can deal with that to some degree, so it is a minor concern. All in all a great kit.

Yeah, I prefer my models a little 'chunky' for much the same reason. How's the scale? My impression is that Victrix tend to be a little on the large/tall side for 28mm historicals, but I've never owned any. (Whereas I do have some Gripping Beast, Fireforge, Wargames Atlantic, etc.)

I don't own any other historicals to compare to, so I couldn't honestly say. But they're about as tall as a "standard" gw humanoid (had a skitarii at hand), so I'd wager you're probably right in your assessment.

Sheesh, man. I might have to make an entire metal band to even consider competing with a Viking warband on a longship…
How does it go... Oh yeah! Doooo iiiit! :giggle:

I've been rather busy the last month or so (can't even remember...), so haven't updated much. I have been working on the comp pieces, though. Here's a quick wip of the longboat.

It moves along pretty well, as you can also perhaps see in the next photo, but the tricky part of bending the planks of the hull is looming... I'll just have to give it a go, I guess.
The vikings are coming along nicely, I think. I'm using Duncan Rhodes' recipe on Youtube, with a few shortcuts... Some of them are almost done by now, so I technically have an entry already, the rest is gravy. But who doesn't like gravy, eh?
Wip of some vikings on a boat.

Now I just have to screw up the highlights, and we'll be on my usual track of painting... To be continued!

You know, when you build a scale model ship, you don’t have to use the same techniques they use when making full sized ones.

See, I know that you're right! But whenever I start building I seem to forget again. Also, I have a bag of 1000 coffee stir sticks where I'veonly used around 15. So plenty of planks! And they seem rather bendy, so half of my brain is saying "easy-peasy", while the other half is screaming incoherently. It'll probably be fine. I'm sure.

You could try soaking them in boiling water, put on some sturdy gloves and bend them by putting weights in the middle. If they're the kind of stirrers I have, it ought to work, no idea if they can be bent precisely as you need them.
I think you're right, it should work. I'm even debating if it's necessary to do anything besides just bending them in place, as they're pretty flexible. Only issue is if I have enough contact surface to let the glue bond properly, and if I have the patience to hold them in place until that bond is secure.:D

Probably not period accurate but maybe you drill some holes and pin those planks...

Very small pins would be ok, they used both wooden dowels and iron spikes to build ships. :giggle: Might be an idea, but that's a lot of tiny holes!

Maybe baking soda and super glue? Or a glue gun if you want fast bonds and burned finger tips.

I might do super glue, followed by white glue... my glue gun died in my hands. Loose connection, it was kinda dangerous, sparks flying as I tried to squeeze the trigger!

Ever sinceI wrote this, I can't stop thinking of the longship as "the gravy boat"... Not very dignified.

Anyway, wip! I haven't managed anything all week, so this is a sprint to the finish line. Nothing new there...
I worked on the mast, mastfish and boom.

Also, the viking ship rubber band method in action!

And lastly, a wolf head ornament to ward off evil spirits and herald the arrival of Harald of the White Wolf!

I hope I have time to finish it today. We'll see!
