What comp piece? Oh, never mind that, I'll get back around to it...
Anyway, I wanted to build a new wizard for Frostgrave. Kit bashed and primed him over the weekend.

He's modelled to be a magic archer. I've always liked bows, enjoyed them in fiction and non-fiction alike, and built a few myself. Sadly, there are no spells in Frostgrave (1st ed) that buff shooting, so I'm thinking he's an Illusionist, with misdirection and charms to stay safe while he takes pot shots at the enemy.
To signify this, I'd like to give him a sort of shimmering cloak. Has anyone stumbled upon any tutorials for something like that, preferably with acrylic paints?

Yes, there is that one. I didn't reckon going enchanter for that one spell would be worth it, though. Picking up a magic bow will be a priority, but enchanting will do in the beginning.

I sent MrsMos and the eldest yakling off to Japan for three weeks, so home alone with the other two yaklings don't leave much time for hobbying. But tonight I attacked the Magic Archers cape, while waiting for the topic reveal for comp 59. I think it turned out pretty well! Might not be exactly what I had pictured, but not terribly far off.
Now to paint the front of him without messing it up...

Thanks, @cainex1! That was the aim, a little night sky sparkle. Originally I wanted a shimmering cloak, but didn't know how to achieve that. Then I stumbled upon tutorials for painting nebulas or galaxy patterns, and thought that might fit the bill.

To do what I think you're thinking of, you would need to mix a pearlescent with a metallic.. or maybe do a base in a pearl and dot/drybrush a metallic.

Martini Henri here on the tribe did some Van Saar with a metallic colour shift paint of sorts. I considered it, but firstly I don't have anything like that, and secondly I didn't want it to be metallic. So I veered from that path.
I'll clean and smooth the cape a bit more, I think. Other than that, I should probably leave it so I don't mess it up. :D

It looks good. If you have a really glossy clear, I would use that for the cloak, should give it a nice oddness. Or if you want to try something more involved, I once used a matte varnish but put it on in multiple thin layers and it had a bit of a shellac effect. Kinda like what you see on real samurai armor or custom paint jobs from the 70s and early 80s.

I only have a rattle can with matte varnish... I was going to give him a spray anyway, so he doesn't chip. Do you think that might do something?

You can always spray varnish in a throwaway cup and brush it on. I have done that at work to touchup furniture, it can work really well. Spray the figure in matte and the next time you're at a hardware store pickup some gloss or satin varnish.

Edit: Make sure you use a cheap craft brush because it will ruin the brush!

Have you checked out RatOgre’s thread? He just posted a necromancer with a shimmery blue cloak that you might like.

That's what I used. Just don't go heavy and use a few coats specifically on the cloak. And I just saw the other reply, totally spray a bit in a cup if you don't have a way to isolate the cloak and do that first before the final varnish.

I'll keep working on the archer/illusionist, but there's also a new comp up! I happened to pick this guy up at my flgs last week.

I think I'll start with him, as a halfling thief for Mordheim. I just need to plop him on a proper base.
I also really want to do another pit slave, as I'm creeping ever closer to a full gang with every comp that allows me to. :giggle: Maybe I can do a bitz box dive soon, I've got a week off work next week.

The halfling got done today, and was posted in the comp thread.

And then, a very quick kitbashing later, this guy emerged!
A pit slave with hammer, just a bit of gapfilling and he can be primed. Made of Les Grognards bits from Wargames Atlantic, renegade bits from Mad Robot and an arm from the Van Saar gang box.
