Finally got some table top action back in w my half painted Balins Tomb set.
Rules are very similar to heroquest with sword a s shield dice. Game over all is meh....but a good intro game for wife and 7yr old.

2nd game in a row where the Cave Troll is an epic failure and does not even register a hit before he is ganged up on.

Game needs loads of house rules but instead I will be slowly sneaking in Battle Companies rules (think mesbg narrative skirmish).

Enjoy the pics.

I guess these "beginner" style games tend to give challenges that are reasonably easily overcome to hook the players with the mighty INSTANT GRATIFICATION I hear the kids need so much these days.

... before totally effing them over with the full ruleset 😄

I was always bemused at the swords vs shiekds dice mechanic.
Like counting the pips on a regular die was the hard part here. Anyways... very little replay ability with this one but its such a cool setting deserves a better board game. Regular MESBG rules are not so difficult and looking forward to swapping those in soon

Currently sitting on two sizeable MESBG collections at the moment: one for Arnor, and the other for Angmar.

Admittedly, a good chunk of those armies are alternative minis to the official GW minis, either because of availability (i.e. most of Arnor's range) or personal preference (i.e. Arnorian-themed hobbit archers, Oathmark orc infantry, and barrow-wights).

I want to do an Angmar army after I paint the dozens of morrnannon orcs from the last starter.
Been looking for a good Gulliver proxie.
Thing I like about MESBG is the community has embraced proxiesy and 3d prints.

True enough. Most of my ventures into MESBG proxy work has been starting with Unreleased Miniatures and Hammerin Miniatures (at least, when the latter's site isn't having formatting issues), but the likes of Davale Games and Medbury Miniatures have also come up frequently in my searches as well.

I'm especially fond of Medbury Miniatures' Armoured Halfling Archers and Barrow-Wights for instance, both of which I've obtained through Etsy distributors like Direforge and Proxywars.

Started off as usual - Cave Troll not living up to Troll standards. Rolling 3 hammers on defense and absolutely missing every attack. Went from underwhelming

To overwhelming by round 8ish
Gandalf, Aragorn and Frodo last men standing.
Frodo put on the ring and ran for cover.
Gandalf was the next to go.
Aragorn was completely surrounded which left Frodo out for the count.

Going to tweak the rules a bit and make the sidewalks worth something movement wise
Also after we go up to 3 Goblin cards - Fellowship members can hit the safety zone ( area in the back right area of the board) to simulate them escaping Balin's Tomb

I've got some Elves on the painting table at the moment. Well they have been there for months if not years.

But I've finally worked out a paint scheme I think.

Ok bumping my old post... as the new book is out. Placing my order for Rise of Angmar and dont think I'm going to buy into any "new editions" of any games workshop stuff.

Completionism is a disease i sometimes suffer and it is starting to set in for this outgoing edition and collecting all the books I'm missing.
