MusingWarboss’s Scenery

You’d have to get angles right but the computer game does have some useful backdrops.

I have been planning to just put one of my other floors against the wall to serve as a background. Just a lighter one made of plastic tiles on pressboard.

Sorry, no pictures (Wait!!! Wait!!!!! Don’t click away!!!) but I was tinkering around with my Zone MDF Mortalis the other day and now I think I understand why a GW puts so many doors in their sets.

Are you still here? Oh, cool. Hello, let me elaborate a bit.

ZM layouts can look a bit weird and unrealistic when it’s just a maze of walls, like… why did they build a structure like that??

However if you stuff in more doors than you think you need, cutting off the table into different sections then it not only starts to look more like these are actually different rooms (like a spaceship or building) but feels like these spaces are intended to serve a purpose - which you could lean into with scatter.

Plus… maybe it just feels more Dungeon Crawler too… and these doors give more tactical opportunities? Open/close them, cut off routes, fire lanes - actually make those 2017 Tactics cards where you can open or close all doors an actual tactic!

I had 8 doors on my 3x3 layout. It really felt like an actual place. Take them out and it’s a rather open maze.

Not sure why I didn’t do this much before, I think it’s because the original set didn’t use doors sensibly in its example and therefore we just never used them much.

Now I think of it like a Dungeon Crawler it 100% makes sense that there should be bloody doors everywhere. Look at your own house for example - will be a bit weirdly open with no doors.

Thanks for attending my TED talk.

Posting up some WIPs of my Godly Erection - which is the name of the 50th YakTribe competition if you’re reading this in future and wondering if this is NSFW.

So that was my quick test build, just using junk (a classic Necromunda tradition) and a spare miniature.

Today I did a quick cleanup of parts, which involves giving them a damn good sanding as they’re probably the sort of plastic that nothing will stick to without significant toothing.

I’ve also added a nice base plinth which is the bottom of a container that held a verrrrry cheap headphone-to-lightning converter from a pound shop.

I’ve also added a couple of bases (32mm GW round and a 40mm Renedera base) as the spot where the statue will stand.

Under this I’ve added some old chain for detail and will continue to add more details soon.

He looks alright! 👍🏻

So while we’re on the Column, I’m probably not going to be doing stone or marble effects as… well it seems somewhat inappropriate for Necromunda.

Thus I propose it shall be a metal. Now I have two choices, Aged Iron, which I’ve done my Zone Mortalis walls in, which will have rust but will be mostly a greyish metal.

Or… rusted to bits.

I’m tempted to do the Aged Iron as it would at least fit in with the walls scenery. Super rusty might not fit it with anywhere except my ruined building corners.

Statue. I’m going to use this Sigmarite so have no use for him and he does scream statue pose.

I will be 40k-ing him up though. Again… what way though??
  • A Goliath Hero
  • An Enforcer of some repute
  • An Inquisitor
  • A boring Space Marine (no)
It’ll depend on what spare parts I’ve got I guess.

My original plan was to make this a Goliath “Pillar of Chains” but as I constructed my mighty column I thought - isn’t there actual rules for statues in Necromunda? A lo there is, in the Book of Peril and what’s more it confers benefits to all gangs in proximity except Chaos types.

Which might make it a more useful general piece of scenery.

Thoughts Yaks???

The pose offers options for quite dynamic scenes. Could easily have them holding some kind of usurper (ganger from a house your opponents play?) ready for a hammering. :D

What different head options do you have for the statue, and do you have any models that would fit as rebel scum for squishing (or does anyone nearby want to volunteer a victim)?

It kind of says "enforcer" to me. If there's space, maybe you can fit a cowering criminal at the end of a chain leash. If not, maybe a hand holding the "scale of justice" would look good! Either way, you're off to a fantastic start!!

Thanks @trollmeat and @Mr. M, I’ve been fishing though the bits box and playing with a few options.

None of this stuff is glued properly at the moment, just tacked together.

So… I’ve removed that tentacle, I’ll give that to an Escher sometime. 😂

Also removed the hammer head and replaced it with a Goliath Power Hammer head, which I’d planned to do anyway. It does need a pommel though as the original seems to have been taken for another conversion somewhere. I think a skull would be suitably 40k.

A lot of heads look too small on this body, Marine heads fit fine though, and some Space Wolf heads look ok. But I’m trying to avoid making him too marine.

I’ve clipped some textured plasticard to create a base that the statue would be moulded to when made. This also means I can keep it separate from the column for painting. I imagine the whole thing will be a verdigris colour.

@trollmeat I added a cowardly chaos heathen to get a good hammering; just a load of parts from the box. Never liked those squatting legs but in this pose I think he looks suitably subjugated!!

Needs to get a further sanding to fit flush though.

Mr. M - I don’t have any scales ⚖ which is a shame. I do have a Marine arm with pointing finger which I think will work though. (Yeah I know about avoiding Marine parts but in this case… it works)

Weirdly the “fat head” Cawdor seems to actually work here. Could this be a Cawdor “wish fulfilment” type monument??

I do think a dramatic scene works well - a lot less lazy than just using the stock miniature too!!

Like it, do you have a spare aquila or 2 you could put on the hammer to replace the goliath icons?

They probably don't have them in the underhive, but a few 3D printed pigeons would be hilarious!
You can actually buy plastic ones from MicroArts - was joking about getting some ages ago. 🤣

Not sure if I have anything that size. I was thinking I might just scrape it off, I’m quite liking this as the Cawdor’s fantasy statue. This is what they *think* they look like. 😂

Not got any further with my statue yet as I’ve been quite busy…

I did however rebase a computer terminal from the N17 boxed set tonight.

I did originally use the 20mm squares with a greenstuff press moulded copy of the 32mm base pattern on - but I’ve become dissatisfied with them over time, the moulding is soft and fuzzy and the paintwork not as nice as my bases.

So I’m gonna use a variation of this technique; gluing fly mesh to a 20mm base and then painting it.

For my colourful Sector Mechanicus I shall paint them using the same car paint as the MDF terrain, that way they will match in with the scenery.

The Zone Mortalis ones will be painted rusty in the same way as the floors of my ruins, that way they will match with those and with my rusty game mat.

A statue update:

I’ve added that pointing finger arm, still needs a bit of tweaking though.

There’s a few greenstuff elements that need doing on the statues just to smooth some joints but overall that’s it pretty much done.

I did remove the Goliath logo from the Hammer head.

The column itself has had some bling added - more chain, a bit of plastic strip with jewels for rivets to make the smooth surface more interesting and some things that make it look bolted into the ground (the bottom surface was too smooth, needed something).

Painting wise I’m still swapping between Aged Iron or the rusty looking chestnut brown I used on my ruins. Originally I was thinking the Aged Iron but now I just keep visualising the rusty brown.

One now taken advantage of recent decent weather and primed and then base coated my statue.

Next step will be the Autumn Brown texture paint! Scary… Hope it doesn’t mess up the look of the piece!!

I’ll only be doing the column, the statue will be shielded from spray as it’s not rusty, it’s going verdigris!!

Hopefully I can get this fellow done soonish.

So… I was going to buy the MDF doors for the TTCombat wall set I have - then I thought “what about the plastic doors I already have?”

So I decided to paint them up and actually use them! I want them to stand out from the aged iron and rusty walls and I saw a French chap do a good set of yellow doors and I just happen to have the Colour Forge yellow paint!!

I did explore the rust and metal you usually see this stuff in but I didn’t like how it blended into the card tiles* and the games mat I have. Also silver doors next to silver walls is boring. Everyone knows Necromunda is all about black and yellow hazard stripes so a dark metal and yellow is very Necromunda. 1995 or now.

So as you can see I’ve sprayed them up. As I only have 7 doors and 9 barricades** I’ve decided to actually paint the details on them, as well as weather them up a bit. I think that’ll be ok, unlike the plastic ZM and SM stuff where I think you’d go mad doing all the details.

Test barricadeas always:

I do need to add some rust powders to the dark metal but luckily if I don’t like it, it will easily wash off.

So now I’ve done the test piece hopefully I can get the rest of the barricades done up quickly too!! Then the doors.

Fancy diorama because… I can.

*I sat it deliberately on a hazard stripe to show the parallel. Of course this does mean it kinda blends in. 🤣 IRL though it’s quite visible unlike the brown ones I originally painted them as.

**I actually have another set but I have ideas on how to use them in some buildings and some interesting themed stuff so they won’t appear here. Well not in yellow anyway.

Spend way too long painting a blue barrel last night.

Believe it or not the blue is both shaded and highlighted!! 😱

I know, insane!!

However I’ve worked out how to do it now and make it look pretty decent.

Problem is these plastic barrels (both the miniature and IRL are plastic) are super smooth but taper at the top and bottom. So I’ve added subtle shade and highlight to those parts to give it a bit of a visual boost.

Sure, could’ve just left it plain Ultramarine blue but that’s not the Warboss Way!
