Narflung's far-flung hobby journey

I'm well overdue with an update. Printing was a huge pain due to poor timing with changing to different brands of both resin and filament, requiring a bit of calibration, as well as some issues with some of the files (mainly the truck) to cut and print them properly. Back on track now, with the only vital elements left to complete are painting the boss and cleaning, assembling and painting the truck. The plinth may not be ready in time but its not a huge priority for me.

I should get the truck assembled and primed tonight, and am pretty confident all is on track. I'd love to submit a second entry but that's almost certainly a bridge too far, but I'll still complete and post it as my next project. I hope everyone elses entries are progressing well.

Are the wheels meant to look like that?

Yeah, I made them cut out to fit the base which has sand pushed out and around the tires. Turns out i made the fit a bit too tight (should have planned for greater tolerances) but I've mostly sorted it out now. I've learned heaps from this build.

Since completing my entry for YakTribe Comp 55 I've been chipping away at a bunch of hobby projects including a Quest for the Grail retinue, a Path to Glory warband, more WH40k 2nd edition Orks and other odds and ends (which will probably be posted here at some point). My main gaming buddy flew down for a few days and we smashed out a few games of Necromunda, which resulted in a bunch of really cool moments, memorialised in this newsletter; he hasn't seen it yet, his copy is in the post.

I've also been putting together a horde of Plague Zombies, which I've used to experiment with a bunch of different paints, including speed paints from Citadel, Vallejo and Army Painter. More zombies yet to be painted.

More prep for my Yak Comp 58 entry. I won't paint all this up in time, but all the buildings are now cleaned and primed, and some more Austrians are based and primed. All these soldiers won't be in the list but I wanted a handful of infantry options from different regiments. I'm currently kitbashing a Strategist and a Damphir.

I've managed to submit my entry in time at https://yaktribe.games/community/threads/comp-58-im-afraid-of-no-ghost.14572/post-334788

Everything, except the printed background was painted in the last 24h (ghosts were basecoated as above). I'm very happy with the result but I may need to rethink using UV cured resin as my adhesive for minis to the acrylic bases as the Jager snapped off once while painting. I would have liked to paint at least one more Austrian, preferably the Officer, but I need to get back on track with my task of painting Orks in preparation for a 40k 2nd edition event in a few weeks.

Time for another update. I've been much quieter than I'd prefer, mainly because so much of my hobby time has been taken up by non-Yaktribe core content, or content that doesn't really have much to show yet.

Leading with my main focus, I've finally finished my WH40k 2nd Edition Ork army (1500pts of Blood Axes), just in time for an event I went to in late September. I'm really happy with how it turned out although my painting style is much darker than all the other painted armies displayed on the day.

I've also done a bunch of work digitally kitbashing some Van Saar in preparation for some games of my slow-burn campaign. I'll post photos of the kitbashes once I've painted them fully, but for now, some action shots.

Of note, one of the kitbashes that I spent ages on was outright killed in his first game (luckily re-rolled to survive).

I've also been working on a bunch of random things behind the scenes, cleaning and basing a bunch of models, flocking terrain etc. I'm also partway through writing some rules for a new Gorkamorka mob - Da Green Brood, bringing a genestealer cult infestation to Angelis. I've been writing these rules for the ORB, but am thinking I should skip that and write directly for the Community Edition..

Lastly, here is my starting picture for Yak Comp 59, a Deserter for Necromunda. I've had this old Citadel Pirate for years and have always intended for him to end up in Necromunda, possibly in a generic gang, but now he fills a much better purpose.

I do have one more idea for Yak Comp 59, but its a bit more work so I'm not too sure if I'll pull the trigger on it. All of the models for this idea will need to get painted one day anyway so if I've got time I should just crack on with it.

I've made progress on my Deserter for Yak Com 59; looking super plain right now but highlights and metallics will do the heavy lifting. I'm not sold on the orange but I'll trust the process and see where it lands me. I'd paint the headband off-white, but thats the colour that the camouflage pattern will be.

I've also finished off a little bit of terrain for Necromunda. The Outlanders barrier was a test piece; I've got a fancy new printer that does good quality colour prints, so I'm testing out what I can do with that. More to follow for sure.

I've been chipping away at side projects over the last month, including helping a buddy start an Eldar army as an intro to the hobby. I've finally finished my Yak Comp 59 entry, Adobe, the PDF Deserter who is in search for his sweetheart who was taken off-planet by corrupt officials while he was deployed to the front.

I'm super happy with how he turned out, particularly for a model that probably would have sat unpainted for many more years.
