New models incoming

I think Rogue Trader has decent enough scale between IG and Marines - mostly as Marines were just guys in Armour.

The original IG lady I have is tiny next to a metal Marine, the plastic beakies mostly look short because they all have rickets!!

I think it was the 90s when it got weird with scales going up all the time. Like original Space Orks are super small!!! But then the plastic arm guys came out and were much bigger. Or maybe it was moving to plastic in general that did it?? All the plastics from that era are chunky.

In all fairness, GW and several other tabletop miniatures companies are rather schizo when it comes to model size comparisons. Sometimes you'll have models scaled up or down to mirror a unit role represented by base size (i.e. Star Wars Legion infantry all need to fit on 27mm bases no matter how tall they actually are compared to one another in the lore), other times you'll have models mounted on different sized bases as a matter of consistent scale across a given range.

Warcry does that pretty hard... looks weird.

The old Blackstone Fortress chaos cultist box is listed as not available online on GW, meaning it’s likely being discontinued. It’s about £16 for 8 miniatures from other sellers so if anyone has ever fancied some for a cheap cultist gang or for conversion fodder they might want to get some while they can.

Is that the one with the horns and the heavy with a fire pike?

Not sure why they discontinue useful sets like this, it’s not particularly old and the sculpts are really nice.
Yeah I’ve called it old as if it’s the Catachan box, it’s only a few years old 😂

But yeah, a really nice box and great value. I’ve got a few of them, I’ll be using some for Cawdor conversions.

The Blackstone cultists (minus the fire pike guy) were also included in the Doomsday Countdown boardgame. I found a copy at my local Barnes and Noble on the discount shelf for $10. This is coincidentally the only reason I own three unassembled Primaris Marines. I imagine they are getting harder to find but there may be a few more out there in the wild.

I did pick that set up. The new chaos cultists fit in very well with them aesthetically. Maybe that’s why they discontinued the small box?

Well with the new stuff you're almost better off than Dark Vengeance minus a heavy stubborn.

It’s daft but GW adjusted the fluff so that peeps models wouldn’t be instantly outdated by True Scale Marines, which they’d have rightly got a good kicking for 🤷‍♂️

I’ve no idea why they did the new scale though, I admit that to me it never looked right that Imperial Guard were the same scale as OG Marines, it was a strange mess that they created back in the early days of the 40k model ranges combined with their frankly weird scale creep, but we’d all come to accept it. Now they are using more than 10% more material for their main range! the cost of which they could be saving and passing on to shareholders! 🤣
Truescale topic was always a nonsense topics as models across all factions got bigger not only Space Marines. They do this on purpose to force players to buy new models as the old collection looks daft when used in conjunction with the new stuff.

It’s ok for games like Necromunda because humanity isn’t a uniform height, so it looks fine on a skirmish table.
It’s not the height that’s the problem with scale mixing, it’s all the other dimensions.

What looks weird is when you get ‘Heroic’ models with giant hands and heads next to those which are in proportion with the rest of the body.

Sometimes you can get away with it and sometimes not. It’s often trial and error. I’ve found some true scale models make great Juves as they’re scaled down enough that they look younger.

I wouldn’t want to run 15mm models though, unless you want a gang of Space Pixies.

That’s the reason I ended up splitting 3rd Ed+ Orks from the earlier ones, I was intending to merge them but it started to look like I was mixing two different ranges of models.

Upside is I stopped buying their newer stuff as I vastly preferred the earlier ones. Even then there can be a size difference between 1st and 2nd but they look fine together.

I tend to tread cautiously on this topic because we all have very different sensitivity for scale. Had a fair amount of bad experience kit bashing from different companies, but I know others could showcase their similar conversions as successful.

Well, yeah. Mismatched scale definitely affects kitbashing. But if you’re just using the minis as is, scale shouldn’t matter much.

I can see the scale being annoying when it comes to weaponry. Like bolt action guns vs bolters. Heck, 2nd edition boaters vs later edition bolsters are radically different
