N18 New player - Advice on Van Saar list building

They can? I mean, the house of artifice book says the teks can, but the subteks can only choose weapons from their subtek list, and that list doesn't have plasma pistols, it has just las pistol and las sub-carbine, so I'd have to turn those juves into specialists before having them take a plasma pistol, right?

in our campaing van saar player tried to play them with las pistols and mainly on short range, I was really surprised, when I saw his list and I am really curious how it will be working.
That is exactly what I want to do and why I am scanning the web.....to see if it has been done. I want to maximize the number of bodies I can field, to include champions. I want to take fixer on all my champs and leader. If I can get one leader and 3 or 4 champs and the rest juves, that is 4 to 5 D3x10 income each game. That can be an average of 100 credits each game, even if I lose (but can't lose a champ/leader). I should be able to rack up lots of credits to quickly outfit the champs with proper weapons and move out. But, I have a hard time seeing how they will succeed in their first several battles.
 
Van Saar are tricky because they have one huge strength (ballistic skill) and a plethora of small to mid sized weaknesses. Their house weapon selection, in particular, limits them. They have no weapons I would consider top tier. Lascannon might be the exception, if you build your gang for it (meaning you take overseer on your leader to have it fire twice per turn). Plasma guns are good and suppression lasers are decent, but VS don't have anything that competes with boltguns or grenade launchers.

I disagree with the notion that it is easy to build an overpowered Van Saar gang by accident. If you just take a bunch of lasguns and las carbines (or even worse, pistols), then you are going to end up with a pretty weak gang. Lasguns are absolute garbage, unless you upgrade them with hotshot packs. Strength 3 with no AP does not cut it in the harsh reality of the underhive.
This is so true! People keep saying VS are OP but they are not. They can do one thing a little better than others. Enemy gangs can easily increase their BS and now they are so much better because they have better initiative, WS, no limitations on Toughness, among others.

VS are so doomed in melee and this game is all about melee. It is so easy to use jump up or whatever the ferocity skill is to invalidate pinning and then charge. If you are any other gang, you will kill your VS opponent in melee. They literally have no chance due to how OP charging melee is. Anyway, this isn't balanced game and you have to take it for what it is. I love VS aesthetics but that's about it.

#Meleemadness. Van Saar no longer have a one limit to toughness since House of Artifice dropped.
Not a lot of effects key around initiative but the ones that do can be extra lethal.
Any decent Van Saar player will let nobody near them so they can't get into melee. If only infiltrate was not a thing... or cover.

Some scenarios and gang abilities make inevitable that the Van Saar will find themselves being charged and in melee. There is no way around it. They can't fight back nor can they escape due to poor initiative.....although, I am fixated on the Prine's initiative stat of 5, worst in the game, but at least everyone else is 4.
 
One of the good things in the previous edition (GotU) was the rad weapons automatically caused a flesh wound. That made them so much more worthwhile.

That made Rad weapons too powerful really. With next week's new rules it would pretty much make them a auto kill weapon for the T3 crowd. Rad weapons are for team play within your gang not just hurting your foes.
Are your lasgunners struggling to wound people? Drop a rad phage flesh wound on them to help them out. You know those four lasguns you bought with the credit difference you got from getting a rad gun over the flamer.
 
Plus hosing down that engaged Goliath who failed to kill it's target with a rad gun which your hapless Van Saar ganger merrily ignores the nasty part of that weapon is just funny.

If rad weapons auto flesh wounded and the new rules for flesh wounding.....it would be glorious! Like playing Corpse Grinders!

But, that would be extremely OP for sure. I do think the new flesh wound rules might make the 'shake it off' muscle skill more desirable as well.
