N18 New Rules Incoming

I noticed there’s supposed to be three underdog scenarios in the current White Dwarf. As I don’t feel like spending £7 for what is probably 6 sides of A4 - does anyone know what they are?

Are they being archived to the vault?

I’m assuming they’re probably low quality filler but was just interested.

I was excited when I saw it was an Escher themed Apocrypha (partly because I rightly guessed it was preceding this weeks pre-orders that I've been waiting months for), but I wasn't all that impressed with what we got. Chem-alchemy needs a massive overhaul and adding 3 new chems that require a Chymist to be bought at all and don't get discounted by the Chymist does not solve the prohibitive credit sink that Chem-alchemy is.

Looking at each chem, Blood Boil is probably my favourite of the three as the +1 to the roll to see if the Toxin Trait works is something I think is needed more than most of the options for Toxin weapons. Concentrated already offered a bonus but only for the first hit with the weapon and adding in Exploding and Maddening, that are included in Blood Boil, would be 10 credits more than Blood Boil is. Maddening adds some disruption if you fail to take the target out and Exploding gives an AoE if you do which are both alright, especially with a +1 to the Toughness roll, but I', still not sure it's worth 30 credits per game (with compulsory Chymist that gives no discount). Skin Fire suffers from the same issue that I feel plagues the Toxin chems, it only does something if you Injure someone and doesn't help with Injuring in the first place (why I like Blood Boil). It effectively has a poor version of the Blaze Trait, applying the Blaze condition on a 4+ but requires Flesh Wound/Serious Injury rather than just a hit and doesn't gain synergy with anything that references the Blaze Trait such as Gunk. It includes Debilitating and Decaying which would make up 60% of it's 25 credits. They debuff characteristic tests and saves, which could be problematic for someone on fire, but again relies on Injury having happened, so doesn't matter much if they were Seriously Injured and you're in position to Coup de Grace, but I guess it'll really mess up someone if you only got a Flesh Wound. Predator's Kiss is a bit of a mixed bag at a high cost of 45 but includes Blood Rush and Hyper that are normally 35. New feature is +1S in melee but everything is Reckless, which I guess synergises with Hyper's speed boost, but it reduces accuracy so the increased chance to wound is offsetting the reduced chance to hit. In the Narrative version of the scenario taking this on Athera will be fine though as she has the WS and Chainaxe hit modifier to ignore the downsides and Acrobatic with increased Move will see her jump in to fight whomever you want her to. Just don't fire her Plasma Pistol as the chem makes her less likely to hit and unable to choose her target! The third part, Blood Rush, is an instant effect when applied, which I feel doesn't synergise so well with the other parts that you might want in effect from the beginning rather than waiting and spending an action to administer when needed. I'd rather take Blood Rush by itself on multiple people than have it as part of Predator's Kiss.

One thing I found interesting here is that the new ones already contains the effect of existing ones, allowing for even bigger combos of up to 3 chems?

"If your gang includes an Apprentice Clan Chymist, then the following may be purchased as Chem-alchemy Elixirs. Note that unlike other Chem-alchemy Elixirs, these may not be combined with other chems and an Apprentice Clan Chymist does not reduce their credit cost."
They add a new function to two existing ones to effectively make a pre-set trio with no customization, no offset of cost through Chymist and only available if you have a Chymist.

Almost no discussion on this! The content is thin (and free), maybe thinner than usual. But the type of content possibly reveals the schedule of future books! This has Delaque crew and some minimal gang-specific vehicle rules for Delaque! They've been dealt a poor hand since 2017 when it comes to release schedule, so that's no surprise in itself. What this indicates to me is that the next and last book with house gang specific vehicle/mount/crew rules will be for Cawdor & Van Saar. Then there won't be any more Ash Wastes™ expansion books to upgrade existing gangs? Because the crew of other gangs are reserved as book content. Goliath, Escher, Orlock & Squat. Or a future book will have content for non-house gangs? What would that be, Enforcers? Any of the cults? Ogryns?

So Delaque may not receive any vehicles at all Same as Goliath cause they got mounts instead. Ash Wastes content (vehicles & mounts) is very random and unevenly distributed!

• Delaque: Nothing
• Escher: Vehicle Mount (skimmer)
• Goliath: Mount Vehicle ("bike")

I assumed that the next one will be Cawdor and Van Saar, then whatever follows would be Delaque and Enforcer - everyone else is irrelevant.

I’d say Enforcer because there’s Wasteland Enforcers so logically they’d need vehicular support.

As for this pamphlet of rules… it’s not terribly exciting is it? I can understand why no-one seems to be engaging with it. Honestly the Apocrypha series is getting less exciting with each one.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Delaque get a rough deal in the long run. They chose a sneaky psyker concept for them which works for a gang but isn’t really that expandable to these bigger concepts.

They either have to be super subtle (y’know, like spies) or it’ll be a clichéd floating psychic Fortress or the like. They could only go “James Bond” on a character else they blow the whole gangs theme.

I would guess the Delaque will be in a third book with some sort of floating jet bike (similar to Escher but actually sleek and using grav pads to float).

I would guess that enforcers will also get expanded in that third book as well, likely by including the badzone enforcers list and the new enforcers dreadnought.

I’d also expect a few useless dramatis personae as well.

Escher Cutters are Mounts (even though they have guns on them and Book of the Outlands specifically says anything big enough to carry guns should be a Vehicle).
Goliath Maulers are Vehicles.
I'd guess the Cawdor things will be Mounts given the models have lances (but maybe they'll go crazy and add rules for melee vehicles seeing how Cutters broke the rules on Mounts not having guns attached already...).

I actually thought it quite curious that they added extra weapons for Delaque vehicles. I mean, sure they are all available to every gang, but they normally need to be bought in Post-game from the Trading Post as they are Rare. No other House got a list of extra weapons that are effectively Common and allowed at gang creation for all their vehicles.

I would guess the Delaque will be in a third book with some sort of floating jet bike (similar to Escher but actually sleek and using grav pads to float).

My guess would be something based on the story that was part of this Apocrypha, a tunnelling mecha-squid (Cephalohydra).

Yes, adding extra weapons for all vehicles to a specific gang is a new format. It is however the easiest way of adding 'new' content, by reusing existing slightly modified. Ie. effectively reducing Rare to Common in this case (and the oh so important access before first battle).

Another thing that is new (?) is that this isn't optional rules players can use to recreate some fluff scenario. These are official rules added to Delaque. They don't need any more agreement using these rules than Squats using Gearhead crew.

My guess is this is it for Delaque - they got no book to look forward to! Otherwise, why not have an apocrypha with enforcer crew and light-weight get-you-by vehicle rules?

The robot brute does look fun, a little bit like registeel from Pokemon. I'm hoping there is a sneaky enforcer only vehicle in there that hasn't been revealed.

With all the mentioning of saints I am really hoping they have rules for sisters of battle initiates and that they release an initiates weapon sprue but since there has been no warning of this I assume it is a no.

Since they said road preachers, I'm hoping for some kind of mobile pulpit.

The part I am interested in is the 'Holy relics' and the 'rules' to make custom relics, in particular if they include/support 'unholy/chaos' relics (otherwise we can just adapt/expand them): it would make for an interesting narrative hook/objective for Chaos corrupted gangs, to aim to retrieve or imbue an unholy relic of their patron dark god...
That is assuming Holy relics are not this campaign's version of Territories/Rackets, which is also a possibility, considering this campaign seems to revolve around a sort of holy pilgrimage/crusade.

If you can make custom relics it sounds more like an item your gang can pick up that buffs them. Although that is a pretty good description of what territory or rackets are.

Don't really think the Initiates would need a weapon sprue... that box is chock full of stuff to put on the little ladies... As is autoguns are trash in 40k compared to the autopistol + CCW loadout so I've got 20 sets of arms left over.
