N18 New Rules Incoming

I want my Ratskin and muties back and plagues zombies and all the dramadis personae. I don't want the ersatz they gave us! Karloth Valois come back grumpy old man.

I really like the way the nomads and ratskins have been combined, so for me they can be omitted, but in a grim-dark toxic hell-hole, the Scavvies/mutants/plague zombies are a crazy omission. (The Warhammer community article is an insult, and doesn't count!) The only thing I can think is they aren't sure how to do multipart modular mutations...

Pretty sure they're holding back scavvies and mutants-proper for Hive Mortis, probably after they get around to Hive Skull (aka Feral Orks vs Iron Prospectors).

I'm sore that we didn't get Book of Ruin 2 as the CGC are now the only boxed gang* not to have a meaningful rules rework. If they follow the release pattern of the Nomads and Squats, the Malstrain will probably get a refresh in a few years - possibly with another revision of the vanilla Genestealer Cult to make that gang more accessible to 40K players already confused by why their easy-access way to the hobby seems to be punished by reliance on relatively-rare familiar models and slower-than-40k fighter profiles...

Hope springs eternal that Delaque gangs will have vehicle rules nestled within the pages of the Spire of Primus - even if it's just some stealth-suit variant of the Van Saar's Arachni Rig to give Delaque players even more decision fatigue.

*Bonedry and Broke's Venator rules make the Ogryns better beyond what I thought was possible - now it just needs some fluff for pit slave gangs.

Yep, nice to see a plastic release of these - including some rules updates (keep it on thread topic) for some models and the others are existing or new I think.

What is sad though is that it is yet another big fat hardback book they wish people to buy to use part of this box release.

  • Ammo-Jack and Slopper are unchanged
  • Dome Runner and Rogue Doc have updated rules (but you could just use the ones you have)
  • Hive Watcher is new.

That watcher I could see being converted into a nice Orlock Servitor drone though (not the one on tracks, the more static one which is technically scenery).

Btw, I believe the 'servitor-looking dude' with the Telescope is supposed to be the Dome runner, while the Sniper kneeling over a map is the 'new' Hive Watcher.
Granted I could easily see it as either a Dome runner, Gang lookout or Hive Watcher (these are all basically the same character archetype), but I guess it is most likely some of these will be used as Hive scum, Bounty hunters and/or Outcast gangers in practice.

I also thought that was the case, but GW released Facebook pictures where they stated telescope guy was the hive watcher and the sniper is the dome runner, (so the dome runner now has a longlas, somehow)

Well, it is not like GW to actually pay attention to what their models are supposed to be equipped wit; for example the Squat Claim jumper model has a rather obvious Power pick, but in the rules it somehow morphed into a Power maul...
Anyway, people will convert/kit-bash to fit their 'vision' and these will provide some very nice new bodies/bits for all kinds of other Hanger-ons and NPCs, which is the main thing for me :)

The article says
Updated rules for the Rogue Doc with medi skull and Dome Runner, and new rules for the Hive Watcher, are all available in the upcoming book Necromunda: The Aranthian Succession – Spire of Primus
So, yeah the Dome Runner has been updated in the new book, which probably covers a wider variety of weapons for them.

I believe the 'servitor-looking dude' with the Telescope is supposed to be the Dome runner, while the Sniper kneeling over a map is the 'new' Hive Watcher.

I’m not sure where that idea came from… especially given he looks like a servitor CCTV camera… and has no legs…

I think there’s about four Hangers On now that fulfill a “we observe then report things to the gangs” roles.

Quick questions the dome runner with a long las is it better in your opinion than the one with stub gun? Does that mean we now have two types of dome runner? Or the last one replace the older one?

Looks like it strongly implies replacement. Certainly better in terms of credits cost. Would have to compare all updated hangers-on released in the new book to see whether it makes sense to keep legacy v1. It's not just about dome runner, but all of them.

From the November 10th announcement:
"Updated rules for the Rogue Doc with medi skull and Dome Runner, and new rules for the Hive Watcher, are all available in the upcoming book Necromunda: The Aranthian Succession – Spire of Primus, while rules for Sloppers and Ammo-Jacks exist in the various House of… gang books, as well as Bastions of Law and Halls of the Ancients."

Oh wow, so many mysteries solved:

Q. Does a model get XP when they cause an enemy
fighter to become Webbed?
A. No.

PAGE 96 – TAKE DOWN
Replace the text with the following text:
When this fighter takes an enemy fighter Out of Action,
roll a D6 before rolling on the Lasting Injury table. On
a result of a 4+, the fighter automatically suffers a
(55-56) Captured result instead of rolling on the table.
Otherwise, roll on the Lasting Injury table for them
as usual.

Q. Can you explain further how the Power Pack trait
works when making close combat attacks?
A. If a model has any weapons with the Power Pack
trait and also the Melee or Sidearm trait, then in
addition to any attacks they normally make the
fighter may make exactly one attack with each of
those weapons. No other attacks may be made with
them and these attacks may not be used with any
other weapons.
For example, if a fighter had an Attacks characteristic
of 3, a power sword, a gem extractor and a circular
stone saw then when they attack they would make
three attacks with the power sword, one with the gem
extractor and one with the circular stone saw.

Color me impressed.

At least it now confirms which of the current books are still valid and which are now discontinued and can be ignored.
A bit more than that (following lists not exhaustive).

Major general changes:
  • basic hangers-on now obtainable by outlaws (who are now more sustainable); psykers have to have a power (so the Helot Witch can get fixer + a power as many have been playing it);
  • Omen of Fortune is now sensibly once a round and does not grant additional goes if you have additional familiars - cultists will take this nerf as a green light to have their still great value at 25 credit exotic beasts;
  • web officially no longer grants the "inflict SI condition, get an XP" benefit (because RAW it was unclear);
  • pistols can now be fired by crew, no longer just those with the sidearm trait RAW

Spyrers:
  • Orrus Power Talons now have Power,
  • Malcadon whips now have versatile;
  • Blind condition only removes one ready marker;
  • Augmentation on Orrus weapons only augments one ranged weapon a go;
Van Saar
  • mancatcher combi-weapon profile fixed still crap, meh;
  • unlimited (well, actually 2 of each type RAW but whatevs) tek hunters at founding
Nomads:
  • faster watcher and stormcaller advancement;
  • arthromite herder gets blast pistol and sky mantle;
  • free chitin daggers;
  • insective knives have Toxin;
  • sky mantle confirmed as an Ash Wastes-only kit with a replaced entry;
  • gunshrouds can be fitted on their long rifles more than compensating for the sky mantle nerf - invisible snipers yay!;
  • non-sanctioned psyker upgrade;
  • Shock trait triggered on a roll of six for the shock trap as the Tribe had surmised;
  • Eyes of the Wasteland skill stacks with teh goggles.
  • Hunters unlimited at creation (as per Van Saar tek hunters - maybe this will be a thing for relatively underpowered gangs?)
Squats:
  • power pack clarified;
  • repeatable ancestor ability via paragon of the ancestors combo confirmed

Enforcers:
  • bz gang compo no longer includes enlisted hive scum;
  • heavy concussion ram amended
  • flak armour amended (still crap, for early campaign economy reasons probably)

Nothing for Book of Ruin cults other than the familiar nerf and hanger-on QoL change, but they're probably next off the block for update anyway.
