N18 New Rules Incoming

Thanks forgot about that. I find it funny it mentions "cannot be modified by a weapon's Armour Piercing value", because I don't think they can be modified at all? From a streamlining point of view I wish the term "field armour" could have set of fundamental rules like you point out, but they are all over the place (as usual) and includes stuff like hexagrammmic fetish which isn't a "save" at all but instead gives negative modifier to enemy psyker when targeted.

Looking forward to see what shenannigans come from the new book. Sounds like a pretty standard copy and paste scenario with slightly different resources.
At this point I don’t think they’re going to modify their campaign formatting, so that’s highly likely.

The Cawdor stuff sounds intriguing - though psychic powers in this edition have been an odd thing since they were first introduced so it will be… interesting… to see if they’ve modified the system again.

Apocrypha 7 gives bonus rules to Nomads:

Some recycled content here, the Ash Spirit is almost identical to Saintly Radiance (Saint Manifestation power). The Ash Spirit is automatic and doesn't cost any actions, but only affects fighters. The Saintly Radiance is a double action psychic power, but affects models (vehicles & fighters).

Weird that these Spirits specifically only affects fighters and not all models.

Makes it sound more and more like the Ratskins and Nomads have merged into a single gang…

It’s been noted on Facebook that the N18 Hardback Rulebook is “No longer available Online”.

So, does this mean they’re finally updating the 5 year old book (it’s done better than some 40k editions)??

We’ve had three stealth updates in boxed sets since then, plus the FAQ and Errata set. It really could do with a proper overhaul.

I kinda wish they would just update it, put the latest rules versions in, do a proper proofread, then clearly label it as the latest one (2023 edition, Rulebook 2nd Edition etc.)

Or is this just their crazy crappy stock system doing its usual thing??

It would be nice for a second edition rule book including Ash Wastes, but I’ve heard that Ash Wastes is supposed to be considered its own game. (Anyone else hear that?) It would also be nice to see a compendium of (still) relevant White Dwarf articles and Apocrypha articles bound together.

I hadn’t heard that but I did say that when it was first revealed. Mostly because the environment ifs so different from Necromunda’s hive setting.

I’m just hoping they do update it because it’s seriously in need of it. There’s been so many things that have been tweaked or stealth fixed since its publication that you’re in danger now of getting conflicting rulings depending on which of the five rulebooks you’ve chosen to get the info from. Let alone the numerous supplemental books.

No matter what we get, GW will say "most up to date" and "includes all FAQ/Errata updates". That has never been the reality. Any attempt to remake the rulebook is guaranteed to include old copy-paste of stuff that's long since been FAQ'ed. It will warp and mutate any number of random rules. Some will be improved, others degraded. And it will most certainly include some new stuff. Always a mix of all possible changes!

Given my experiences of GW over the last decade I’m fed up with buying rulebooks which get rendered obsolete within 2 years.

With the age of the “current” Necromunda Hardback Rulebook and knowing it’s been through several stealth updates already etc. I wouldn’t touch that old one with a barge pole - or advise anyone else to buy it either.

At least if there was a new one you’d feel better about it being somewhat current.

At this stage, I'd rather have GW release a "Necromunda: Exterminatus" boxed set, and just wrap up this version of the game. Let the community carry it on, like before Newcromunda came along. With the fan-made rules compilation, @TopsyKretts is pretty much already doing that - given the amount of dis-ambiguation, error correction, and sanity (likely at the cost of his own) he has imparted into the current rules. I have no interest in a second edition of this train-wreck ruleset from the same company that turned a streamlined, concise, (relatively) affordable skirmish game into a set of rules that appears to be modeled after the tax code in its opaqueness, inscrutableness, and page count.

I wonder if there will ever be a time when the Great Wise Yak says “f**k this noise” and draws a line in the sand as a cut off point for any more adaption of rules into the gang manager. Let someone else create a site and inherit the headache of trying to adapt ridiculous rule sets into something coherent and usable.

We’ve got at least another three years of this if their original plan of 2019 is anything to go by.

Let me fish the image from the archive…

So, we’ve had Ash Wastes, that just leaves the Sump Seas, Polar Scrap Spoils and Eye of Selene to go which will no doubt be the usual format of:
  • Boxed set
  • Setting related gang expansion book
  • Campaign books #1-3
Plus related plastic releases.

After they’ve done all this who knows what will happen to the brand?? Possibly shelved, or maybe rebooted into another edition.

The polar scrap wars doesn't sound particularly inspiring. Can they actually get a campaign with that premise. The sump seas could be ash wastes but with boats. The eye of Selene could be very interesting though. I wonder if it will have one person fighters.

The way I see it. Currently you have 3 separate settings. Classic which is n18 and the gang war compendium and I'd include the book of ruin and the book of judgement in this as those gangs were tied to this structure. The expansion which is the house of stuff. Then ash wastes. It would be a mistake to think this is one game. You could of course run a three point campaign in which your guys start at the bottom with the original setting then once that campaign is finished port the gang into the expansion setting campaign. Then when that's finished have them go out into the ash wastes letting them spend that hard earned cash on cars and trucks as every good Ork, er I mean human, wants to do.

GW has the frankly worst online store system, the "status" often bears no resemblance to what is actually happening so I wouldn't read too much into what it says. Things will often appear to be gone forever only to return properly later.

Necromunda tiles being a relevant example that often said "No longer available online" but now are readily available.

Well unless it's terrain; that stuff just disappears and appreciates faster than Lego...
This is the reason why I've kept all Lego boxes and instructions despite my wife's complaint. I bought a lot of it in 2018 so most of it is no longer produced. When the kids are grown out of it I'll see which ones can fetch a good price.
