N18 New Rules Incoming

Wow, FAQed already.

Haha, I'd be more surprised if GW published anything that didn't need an immediate FAQ!

One of the books last edition got FAQ/errata'd before it even released; I think it was House of Blades? And then they had to errata their errata a week later.

I still don't really get what you're saying or how you think that toxin works, haha.

My reading of the Paralysing Toxin preview (without seeing its full rules) is that it gives the weapon a chance to inflict the Webbed status. The Webbed status prevents movement. This means that the model who got SI'd by the toxin-coated weapon will have to do a Desperate Escape, and will go OOA. This is a great upgrade for a dedicated close combat fighter; it's like rolling a skull +X% of the time.

The main downside will be that you'll usually want to charge models that have not activated yet that turn, so that you can get them OOA in a prompt manner. If you do it to a model that has already activated, then the next turn they can just try to outlast your melee fighter, in the hope that you choose to activate first (a reasonable bet, since melee fighters like to activate early). Of course, you can also send backup to stand near them and see them on their way, if you have another fighter in range.

I've never really considered the "move away" action for a seriously injured model who is in close combat as worth it unless there is a friend that I can reach with my movement, it might have something to do with table density perhaps.
Again, I can't really tell what you mean. Are you talking about N17?

In N26 moving away is a no-brainer. You auto-OOA one way or another, otherwise.

I’m probably never going to stop mentioning the clandestine “Second Printing” they did last edition, where they would just sneakily update a book when they did the next batch, correcting mistakes and updating things discreetly but never actually telling anyone they did it.
In fact, they denied it one when someone asked by saying “we only sell books that are up to date”. Or something similar.

I think House of Blades was one of those… what it meant though was that people with the same books in a campaign suddenly found they had different points costs and rules descriptions in supposedly the same book!!

Worst bit was that you couldn’t tell from the outside, only once you’d paid and taken the cellphone off and looked at the index page with the copyright information on could you tell if it had the “Second Printing” text on there or not!!

Very very Sneaky.

I have understood the way the rule works. You probably have a different experience on how it applies.

I have a close combat guy charging a model, I put it down but the opponent is seriously injured. At this point he can do two things:

move away of his Strength allowance and then roll for recovery provided his movement allowance gets him beyond 1" of any enemy model
or
do a desperate escape.

With most models having strength 3 (thus being able to move around 3"), if there are tall obstacles that limit movement or other difficult terrain in the way (cutting movement allowance in half) and there are other models around it might not automatically be easy to move over 1" of enemy models. In these cases you would simply choose the desperate escape.

Conversely, if I can reach a friendly model with my movement of course one would move away for the additional chance of recovery.

I see. You must play on very distinct terrain if the idea of 1.5" to 3" clear retreat space seems tough to obtain. Even on SecMec gantries and minimum-sized Zone Mortalis hallways you'll have enough room to back off from a threat with that distance (unless you've jammed your entire gang down a single thoroughfare, and are blocking your own fighter).

i agree, but I kinda also want XP
Notably, you don't get XP from the 1" self-destruct completing either, since it occurs in the opponent's activation and is not a result of your fighter's action.

If you decide to skip the toxin to purse a greed-based strategy of going for CdGs instead of Web kills, to garner extra XP, I salute you. 🙏

Ok, so the Journals are out... I'm really disappointed by the new special Goliath's fighter types:
  • The Crucible hooks (cool looking) weapon can only be taken by a fighter with Heavy Blows skill, which is wasted on them, as they are not a Heavy weapon.
  • The Ignition Cannon can only be taken by a ganger type with Bulging Biceps skill, which again is wasted, due to it not being a Heavy weapon.
The Escher's don't have that problem - the double pistols Huntress and Blade Maiden have skills which can be used with their exclusive weapons/gear (Khimerix Sting and Multi Harness). Why, GW, why?

Okay, I've seen the Escher Journal and my fears were mostly unwarranted. Definitely doesn't feel like power creep.

There's only three Chem Alchemies per category now, and none seem crazy strong. The finesse skills are mostly laughably bad (Lightning Reflexes is by far the best).

All the new weapon options feel appropriately costed. For example, the Heavy Wyld Bow has the profile of a Long Las but with extra AP, and costs slightly more than a Long Las. The Needle Sniper is a Needle Rifle with doubled range for +15c. And so on.

The new fighter options are pretty much existing profiles with an extra skill or stat. There's some interesting unique equipment and skill combos on the specialty gangers. I am a big fan of the Alpha Phelynx which is a 2W WS3+ Phelynx that is a fighter (Not a pet) and can have its own pet Phelynx.

It just feels quite tidy.

Yes. I was suggesting that I'm sure there are 3d printable nude (or at least topless) Escher hangers out there somewhere.
Ooooh, must be some of those NSW (Not Safe (for) Wife (to see)) I've heard about. 'Course they're all technically that for some of us.

Prediction:
Next Necromunda Journal will be the ”Apocrypha Necromunda” articles, slightly reworked into N26.
Followed by the Van Saar Journal, and perhaps Squats.

After seeing the Journals, I’m actually quite happy that they don’t feel like a must-have to play the game

The alternative gangs don’t seem to be straight upgrades over the basic ones
The new skills are nice but also the classic ones and the faction rules don’t look game-changing either
It all feels more like additional flavour and variety than something you need to remain competitive

The new ganger profiles look fine too, but I don’t think I’d take them in most cases

In fact, I wouldn’t mind playing against a gang that had access to its Journal while mine didn’t
Even with the extra options, I don’t think it would create any meaningful imbalance

I’m really excited to see the new Orlock models, and especially their alternative gang rules, because they probably have the weakest gang rule of the six core Houses

By the way, based on how GW handles Journals in games like The Old World or Blood Bowl, does anyone have an idea of how often we should expect new Underhive Journals to be released?

I’m wondering how long we might have to wait for Orlock.

Is it me, or are the Carapace Armour rules a bit odd?

They either don’t really affect low-Initiative fighters like Squats, because, well, you can’t go lower than X, or high-Initiative fighters like Eschers, because, well, their Initiative is already high.

So the only ones really punished are fighters with average Initiative. They will still be beaten to the punch by high-Initiative fighters who are also wearing Carapace Armour, while low-Initiative fighters don’t really care because they were going to act last anyway...

Don't forget that Initiative is used for several types of movement now, like Dashing and Consolidating. An inch lost is an inch lost for everyone, on that account.

A Squat has I4 on the charge; that's good enough to strike before quite a few gangs (including Cawdor, Goliath, Van Saar, GSC) so there's real trade-off there.

I'm still sort of down on the whole N26 armour landscape, though. Preferred the RPG shopping fantasy version, and being able to buy smaller pieces of it here and there, rather than this version where your fighters are doing training montages learning to backflip away from danger.

Indeed the goliath Journal is laughably bad, for wha has been previewed. The only "special" ganger deserving any attention is the medic due to it's special equipment granting 1 extra action to another model. The rest is trash.

It seems GW come partly to their senses after all, and allowed the Ignition cannon to be taken by any fighter. So there is some consolation. Too bad my Stimmer is not allowed to equip Crucible Hooks though…

Well, Goliaths are still toughness 4 dudes, and their Gang rule (+1 to strengh when charging) it's one of the best in the game (can be used for coup of grace, even for "juves")
Also they are not bad at shooting, and even their initiative it's kind of high ( more than Orlocks )

Then, it's ok that their journal is not pushing them forward, but I agree that it's stupid to give them abilities that they can't use, there are a lot of other bad/very situational abilities to give them instead

Another funny thing:

One of the 2 Gunners is armed with a Rivet Cannon, a weapon that has the trait Assault
The Gunner comes with the ability Hip-shotting that grants the trait Assault to all weapons

Basically, instead of paying 15 extra credits, take a normal specialist, give him the Rivet Cannon and take a more useful specialist skill than Mighty Leap

Better, cheaper
