Thanks @Unslain , and happy nabbing!

Now with better pics, here's the full gang of Cultists ready to rumble. Got the Leader with vertical eyelids, a Plasma Gun and an Axe. The four Gangers are armed with a variety of basic weapons. Careless hivers might think that one of them carries a sleeping bag, but on closer inspection it'll turn out to be just an enormous scroll of forbidden curses. There's two Heavies with a Flamer and a Heavy Bolter. Three Juves are equipped for close combat. Every gang should have a Juve with two knives, and I finally made a proper conversion to underline that. One of the Juves has a flail for an arm, and the last poor kid's got a hook and a Chainsword type of attachment instead of hands. Dangerous in melee, difficult in toilet. Each member of the gang also has a holstered pistol. As the load-out is quite heavy, I'll have to start the gang without one of the Heavies, or just leave all the pistols out until the gang gets enough credits for them. Can't wait to get gaming. But when? A few more pics from different angles at my blog.

Thank you @Crazy Ivan ! Yeah, really happy how they turned out.

But now here's a problem. I was intending this army to be made (as much as possible) from a small number of big dudes, as opposed to horde armies. And now I can't stop thinking about making at least 30 more of these cultists... One idea was to use chess pieces. 16 white & 16 black ones. That's 30 rank-and-file plus 2 queens or kings to lead them as HQ choices (maybe a sorcerer and a dark apostle). Driving on a rhino with a chess board on top. Ridiculous but I just might do it.

Just felt that this Khorne Lord of Skulls needs more bulk, detail and generally all around chaotic vibes. So have been sculpting in more demonic faces that emerge from everywhere, hooked claw-like appendages, cabling, bolts and rivets. Also filled the mouth with skulls that this gigantic demonic engine drinks all the blood from to fuel itself. Then there's a couple of Bloodletter skulls to push the vibe in even more Khornate direction. But I still don't know what to do with the wheels. Should they be left like that, and painted dark and dirty to not draw attention away from everything else? Or maybe sculpt in some demonic textures and glue in dozens of spikes? One thing to consider is also the handling of this model. Not that many places to lift it easy & safe while painting and gaming, if the wheels get filled with tiny detail and spikes. Anyways, I'll soon get to glue in the teeth, the arms, the shoulder pads and then finish sculpting around those areas. Gotta start thinking about the painting!

Two Heldrakes get basic shapes on. Toy aeroplanes, paint & glue bottle caps, Lego Bionicle parts, cheap hobby clay and mixes of Green Stuff and Milliput.

I can see why you don't want spikes on the wheels, but do you have some sort of chaos icons? Maybe shields as hub-caps? Or banner tops? I see parts from the old hunchback chaos warriors there. If you happen to have the big circular banner tops, would they fit over the larger wheels?

Now that's a great idea! I even happened to have a box full of hunchback cw bits on the table, but there were no banner tops. Maybe that's why I just hadn't thought about them. Too close...
Anyways, after a quick search and fitting, turns out the hunchback round banner tops are exactly the right size. However, I like the tiny rivets the original Dublo wheels have way too much, and don't dare to cover them with anything. But I also found some Ogor belly pieces (the round convex ones with teeth shaped decorations) that might be great for hub-caps. Thanks!

The Khorne Lord of Skulls got its teeth and arms finally fixed in place. I also tripled the amount of visible brain tissue hanging out on the back of its head. Made shoulder pads from pieces of gothic ruins, chopped toy Easter eggs, tiny beads and Green Stuff. They resemble the legendary RTB01 beakie Space Marine heads, which wasn't intentional first, but fully appropriate. Added in two protruding curved holders for extra skulls on the back side. Initial idea was to attach these to the models head, maybe on the sides to accompany the curved horns. But the head would have been too busy then, and I still wanted more mass on the rear half. There's also a few more sculpted demonic skull faces emerging from all around.

Heldrakes are getting some jet engines, exhaust pipes and cabling on them. I used Blue Stuff to make a few crappy copies from pieces of Ork jump pack, a Nurlesque fan and a cylinder shaped thing with tiny holes on one end I found from street. I guess it's from broken earphone. I only had one original of each of these, and as I like them a lot, just had to do the copies. Along with them, there's more super glue caps and Lego bits added in to make these things look like very fast and unpredictably moving scary fliers.

Some time ago I bought a box of 100 casino chips for a few euros only. They are solid, heavy and exactly 40mm in diameter, so perfect for bases. But who would need such bases in this army? Terminators! For sure I ain't going to include a bog standard unit of those elite troops, and wanted to build something different. The first idea was to do kind of elongated versions from the classic hunchback Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warriors, basically by adding an extra torso and set of arms on top of the usual build. They could hold huge axes with two hands, and bolters on the other two. And classic 40k Terminator back banners should become a thing again.

While looking for the CW bits from my multitude of boxes, I came across an Ogor body, also from the WHFB / AoS fantasy range. He would be the units champion. I'll be using the Ogor heads for the whole unit, add bulgy eyes and inverted CW heads for weird jaw-claws, and then sculpt in more stitched-together demonic flesh tissue. Here's a starting point with the champion. Still wondering whether to add Chaos Spawns arm (or something) protruding from the hole in the models belly.

Cheers mates! Very happy you like the mess I'm making. :giggle:

So the unit of brutish Terminators is forming up here. I'll be sculpting in more of the good old hunchback Chaos Warrior types of armour plates on them. Faces will become huge and bloated sacks of stitched together flesh, bulgy eyes and horns sprouting out from unusual places.

DSC_0335.jpg

The Heldrakes have been covered in yet more fleshy tissue and teeth. Also started building up their arms. Other has got pincer types of curved claws made from old plastic Chaos Warrior helmets, while the other will be having more humanlike fingers. I decided that I didn't like that much of the other ones face, especially around the eye area. So I sculpted some stitched lines to cover the eye sockets, and consider giving it just a single big eye on its forehead.

The Khorne Lord of Skulls finally got some primer and dribbly red basecoat on. I actually gave it four coats of Army Painters Matt Black primer in hopes I won't rub any of it off while handling it when painting.

I kitbashed some of those old warriors with terminators back in 2nd/3rd edition. At the time, the parts - well, heads and arms at least - fit quite well. Modern terminators are larger, but you've bulked out the warriors to blend in convincingly. Indeed, I didn't notice until seeing the rear view that one was (based on) an ogre.

My gåd that Khorne Lord of Skulls is super wicked! I love it!

both it and those helldrakes really reminded me somehow about Heman universe. I don't know (or remember) does some particular monstrosity on the heman universe look like that, but they look like something that could be in heman universe... (which actually doesn't narrow it down a bit) But 80s kid remembers :D

Thanks guys!

Yeah, these Termies are quite bulky. It's mostly because of their torsos I guess. Three of them are just blobs of craft clay, maybe four times the mass of regular CW torsos and with lots of extra stuff added on top. The potato colored torso is actually a shoulder part of some huge Doom monstrosity, that I chopped the weapon part of the arm off (and added into the Khorne Lord of Skulls). Huge heads don't make them look any smaller either.

And the He-Man universe! Oh boy was it just great! As a kid I was so much into that along Legos and Transformers. Much related to the converting / assembling / kitbashing part of the hobby I just love a lot. Didn't actually realize / remember before that there were so many cool weird characters in the Master of the Universe thingy that may well have subconsciously inspired a lot of this project. Just look at the armor plates of the Battle Cat, or Modulok (who I was lucky enough to have as a kid!) from Hordaks group of evil mercenary villains. 🥰

I might have to do a version of Mantenna though...

And then...

Painting the Khorne Lord of Skulls. Continuing sculpting the Heldrakes.

I have to say it has been a bit daunting task to paint this huge demonic engine of Khorne the Blood God. Sure it's big, at least bigger than any miniature I have painted before. And crammed with weird detail that's sometimes hard to decide how to paint. Is it iron, gold, glossy red, sickly skin or something else? Should I just leave certain areas bare and add black and white checker patterns later? Maybe cover it all with blood, transfers or painted runes? Paint the wheels with only very understated dark greys, or make them dirty with lumps of ground and grass textures to kind of match the bases of the other miniature in this army project? Are all (or just some) of the skulls bone colored, or maybe even bright bloody demonic reds? Black horns & teeth? Magenta brain tissue & gums? And very importantly, in which order should I apply any of these colors to not make other steps unnecessarily harder by accident?

Now I've enjoyed every step of the painting of this beast so far, but it has always been a bit difficult to get started. I feel it's because of the uncertainty of it all. Not absolutely sure which step to take next and how to take it. I've been doing this particular project (an army of Chaotic Overlords) for over three months now (and enjoyed everything about it!), but might need something else to do for a change. I've come to accept that these kinds of 2-4 month periods for any army project I have going on are very much normal and okay. I wouldn't even call it fatigue at this point. No need to feel bad about not continuing forever. I've managed to do a lot of assembling, sculpting, converting and painting with this group of big guys that already has started to feel like a proper army. Just have to catch a breath for a few days and see if I'll want to keep working with these guys and maybe even finish them before moving onto something else. Anyways, here's the WIP Lord of Skulls along with a duo of Heldrakes that are almost done with the sculpting phase now.

While I understand this kind of worry, and sometimes have it myself, I'd say don't worry too much about such things. If it's not clear what some detail is, then whichever option you choose won't be clearly wrong. Further, once painted a particular way, it will look more like what it's painted as than it did before.
