Necromunda One man and his high tech toys - building the hive

Ha ha ha! Really you should stencil in some bowling lanes or something if you plan on not having any cover at all. 😛

Next piece, the ruined wall sections. @LordAkkrand, have you thought about how you'd integrate these pieces? Most of the floor plates are not the standard size.

Oh, I imagine we'll be placing obstacles in there, for sure! Or, possibly think of a way to defensively place it out of the way before he gets a chance to place it.

I don't follow what the problem with the ruined sections will be? I'm cutting it now. As long as the floor plates aren't bigger than the sections they're replacing?
From my cursory look over the base tile sets, there are 3 full length ruined walls, and one ruined column with 2 half-wall ruins. I can simply get a column base and give it a pile of debris (laser offcuts, kitty litter, etc) for the ruined column, and a half wall ruin leading to it from each side.

Hey, I noticed after I cut it that there wasn't a second end-wall. I had to cut another one to complete the ruined wall I was doing. While I was at it, though, I cut another 6 inside pieces and a second extra end wall and put together a half-wall as well, seeing as I had so much of it already.
I have to break up the files anyway to fit them on A4 (210mmx297mm), so I might break up this one to be a single sheet for a full wall ruin, and another sheet for 2 half walls.

Well, this turned out all right. I've been wanting to do a laser grid barrier thingy for a while, even ordered some tinted acrylic last year, but then forgot about it. Remembered it the other day and had to do quite a bit of searching to find where I'd stored it. I'll see if I can get the files up tonight.

And naturally there's a half wall variant as well, though I think the wider one looks cooler.

EDIT: That was quick!

Half wall with laser grid uploaded. That's the last of the wall pieces I've designed and now it's just lacking the two platform sets.

Aftter that I don't have any plans, which is probably the best since I have a lot of models unpainted.

They look fantastic Bilbostomper! I'll definately be cutting a few of those. I too have a pile of 3mm acrylic that I got but never used. Looks like I have a use for it now!

No update on my code, I spent most of today cutting and assembling. I'll see about uploading some photos of how much I've done so far.
From the original Underhive tiles (9 double-sided tiles), I've made 4 tiles fully, including all the columns/walls for them (to be fair, A8 was a bit of a cheat since it's the open tile with no columns or walls).
I still haven't worked out the code necessary to do some of the tiles that have holes in them, so I'm ignoring those ones for now, and calculated that I need to assemble 13 6x6 tiles, 38 columns, 13 walls, 34 half-walls. Then 4 or more doors, 2 ruined walls, 2 3/4 length ruined walls, and make a ruined column.

But... I don't think I need to have all 13 tiles available at once, no mission would use that. So what I actually need is less than that.

As someone who builds with junk and hopes the paint job will bring it all together, I’m impressed with the amount of thought that goes into these projects. The results are awesome.

Thanks! I like to pretend that I'm an Orc & Goblin player at heart, but really I'm far too organized. ;)

Today's new upload. Just one more to go before the set is complete.

Final piece of the set:

Proof of concept for the modular ruins set. Seems to work. Now I need to figure out which height(s) and width(s) the pieces are going to be. On the pictures below the columns are about 1" while the wall is 3". It looks all right, but I need to make some mockups for doors and things. The height is 64mm and I think that's going to be one of the options. Maybe another will be half again as tall. Thinking the walls will be 2 or 3 layers thick to allow for some depth.

EDIT: So walls will be two lengths - 76 or 126mm long, which means that a wall + column is either 100 or 150mm, and then everything divides neatly into 50mm squares. That's bigger than the old size of 40mm squares, but that's okay - if the walls were 56mm long that would end up 1) cramped, and 2) a lot of little pieces per section, since each column is 12 parts you need to glue together.

That Friday-Saturday is too true! Although I find the exact opposite is just as likely:
Me Saturday:
"I'll assemble the final bits of this tile and it's components and then get a picture of all I've done so far"
Me Sunday:
Lazy around all day, then play Twilight Imperium IV on TTS until 1am.

I like the simplicity of those new modular pieces. Stygian Undercroft, Sector Mechanicus, New Clear Zone, or are they a new set? Or just to be used as obstacles in any of them? I can imagine there are layers to the building in a hive as old as those on Necromunda.

They're intended to be their own set and really primarily for 40k rather than Necromunda (because I've tried using the necro terrain in 40k and it often doesn't work so great). The height will be the same as the Stygian Undercroft and New Clear Zone set, but I'm not planning on making them compatible beyond that.

EDIT: Since this is a new set it will of course require a new name. I'll have to think of something...

EDIT2: Messing around with floor textures. Stompy shows the world that he know what an octagon looks like!
Too much?

EDIT3: A bit better, I think.

Hmm, well, we'll see. These are kind of octagonal, but also kind of square, so maybe that's appropriate for something that should work for both?

Just messing around with some ideas for wall textures. Again this is the industrical gothic kind of look, but I may end up doing some parts that are more "pure" sci-fi. Haven't decided yet. The walls are double-layered and I think that's probably enough. Hope to get a test print tomorrow.

As it turned out, that took a bit longer than I had hoped. My town is currently having a bit of an outbreak so that means working from home at the moment. Happily the wife and all our parents are vaccinated so it's just an annoyance and not something to be very worried about.

Anyways, here's the print:

Generally quite happy with how it's turning out. This is the smaller size height and width for the sections (there will be variants that are 50% wider and/or taller) and I had originally planned to have several designs for each size. Thinking about it, with ruined variants, that would be too many different parts, so I'm thinking I'll do one variant + ruined version(s) for each size. Plus variant(s) with a door.

I think I want to keep the arched windows, so maybe the short wall will have two windows and the long one will have three. That's a possibility. Two layers are fine and saves some time compared with three. Each layer will have engraved detailing on one side and then they'll be glued together back to back. In the picture you can see that the one with three arches has diagonal cuts in the front layer, which I like less than the two arches variant where both layers have rounded arches.

The buttresses are okay, but could be better. I'm concerned they may be too big and get in the way of models moving. We shall see about that.

Floor is okay for now.

Obviously also a couple of variants of ruined pillars will need to be made.

Personally, I think the reversed wall looks kinda cool. Like the old castle defenses with the angled window sills so they can shoot out while still getting some protection from the wall. Very grimdark. And the vents on the bottom have a nice recessed look.

The angled door looks more techie-scifi to me than the rounded one. The rounded one makes me think more dungeon doorway.
