I have plans for several warbands in the near future, but particularly focusing Ostlanders for two reasons:
1) They're also crazy woodsmen, so I can build them using the rest of the Frostgrave Barbarians from my Middenheimers.
2) They get to hire an Ogre as a permanent member rather than a hired sword, so potential for an Ogre Hero!

However, an Ogre is expensive, so they're going to start short on numbers, equipment or both. Here's my current thought:

Elder 60 Hammer 3 Bow 10 = 73
Blood Brother 35 Hammerx2 6 = 41
Blood Brother 35 Hammer 3 = 38
Priest of Taal 45 (Blessed Ale) Hammer 3 = 48

Jaeger 25 Bow 10 Hammer 3 = 38
Jaeger 25 Bow 10 Hammer 3 = 38
Jaeger 25 Blunderbuss 30 Hammer 3 =58
Ogre 160 Clubx2 6 = 166

500 on the dot.

It's only 8 models and 4 heroes, so I'll have a low rout threshold for my first few games and potentially struggle a little for income, but I have a solid ace in the hole - the Ogre.

Firstly, he's fearsome. This could be a big deal when my main opponent plays Witch Hunters, making his Warhounds likely to fail charges.

Second, he has 3 S4 attacks, which is a lot of offensive potential to start with (or possibly 2xS6 might be better if I can free up the crowns for a great weapon? I don't think there's much in it, and clubs are cheaper.)

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, he has 3 T4 wounds. This is a lot of sticking power on its own, but has incredible synergy with the Priest of Taal's Blessed Ale. Difficulty 5 means a massive 83.3% (almost exactly the same % as a 2+ on one die) chance of completely restoring him to full health every turn, as well as removing one attack from any enemies within 2" in the next close combat round! It makes it far less feasible to whittle him down with missile fire during the advance, too.

If I can keep him from getting swarmed by more than 1-2 enemies, it would take quite a string of bad luck for him to go down, so I'm hoping he can bully me into winnning some games!

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I ran a similar warband, although only had 2 jaegers, plus a ruffian. Those drunks are really useful for guaranteeing a charge against fearsome opponents.

Your weapon choice for the ogre is fine. Extra attacks at S4 will be useful. I had an axe and club on mine as that's what my model had, but a sword for parrying could help keep him alive a little longer. The 2-handed weapon at S6 does mean S3 opponents can't parry him but that's not a massive concern at the start.

The ogre will be very useful and I agree to take one early to start earning XP asap as Slow Witted can be frustrating. Good luck on them becoming a hero but don't count on it. Great if it happens though. Get them to carry wyrdstone shards (Wyrdstone Hunt scenario) whenever possible to earn extra experience.

Normally they can be a bit of a bullet magnet (my opponents also seemed to roll so many crits) but having the Blessed Ale power should mitigate that. I had Stag's Leap on my priest so didn't have your healing abilities.

i support the sword + club build suggestion.

be careful about losses... if you lose 2 bodies, you need to start taking routing rolls

Thanks for the advice - I would like to add in a Ruffian or two eventually (mostly for flavour!), but the WS2 was a bit off-putting and I don't think I will have to face any other fearsome models for a while, either.

I was actually hoping for the squirrel prayer when I rolled and was a little disappointed at first until I realised how strong the combo would be.

I probably will lose the first game or two, but just couldn't squeeze the gold for an extra body without dropping too much equipment. Another cheap warrior or two will be first priority.

Good calls on the sword for the ogre - I'll either drop a bow or buy it after the first game.

WS2 isn't a big deal until you start facing WS5 opponents. You are still hitting on 4+ against WS3 and 4. Plus really cool modelling options. I had one with a pair of bottles for proper bar brawling.
