I'm wondering what people's opinions are for which starting weapon to use on an Overwatch model.

I've been unimpressed with the Long Rifle in the games I've played.

The long range bonus doesn't seem to come up very often in campaigns that have both 3d and 2d missions.

The humble Lasgun feels like a more reliable option.

It seems like you'd have the +1 to hit often and I feel like the important job of Overwatch is to trigger the pin to end the opponents activation. Any damage it does is icing on the cake. It has a good ammo roll to keep it firing, and if you do fail it you get to guarantee the reload to keep on trucking the following turn. It can be upgraded via Hot-shot Power Packs to increase its lethality during in the campaign.

I've head of people having good results with a Shotgun + Executioner Ammo

This has an increased lethality, while also getting the +1 to hit most of the time, but can also be a credit drain when the ammo check is eventually failed.

There are also the credit costs to consider:
  • Lasgun-15
  • Master-crafted Lasgun-20
  • Long Rifle-30
  • Master-crafted Long Rifle-35
  • Shotgun + Executioner Ammo-50
What do people think is best for a starting Overwatch weapon for the Delaque?

I personally love the long rifle, but as you say if you play on very dense terrain I can see how it's benefits could be limited.....my view is that whilst the shotgun option is more lethal it's too short range, if you're going for a sniper leader you want to be able to sit him further back. Also ideally in an elevated position and shooting down and at an angle will chew in to your range i.e. you want a 24 range option. Something like a lasgun is viable especially as you could slap an infrasight on it and minimise the chances of missing, especially as you don't need to aim in order to get it's benefits unlike the other sights. Another option could be an autogun and then put some rad rounds on it after the first game - the extra flesh wound chance might be quite good in light if the new injury rules.....

There are many pitfalls in necromunda that will cast you as "that guy/girl/other pronoun". The plasma spam Van Saar, overseer cult icon Hungry Hungry Hippos, twin Naght ghuls murder suprise etc. Most of these pitfalls can and should be dealt with by sensible restraint on a players part.
Overwatch can be abused and is a good way to lose friends. Picture your overwatch phantom, I assume, with a Lasgun. They interrupt a fighters turn and pin them, maybe wound. Now have them with a multimelta.
I rarely use overwatch but it I do I pick a low end weapon like the long rifle or lasgun. The long rifle hits harder but is best used long range. The lasgun is lower powered and shorter ranged but more accurate close up.

I get the sediment that overwatch can be "unfun".
But at some point you also need to play to the strengths of your faction.
I feel like board control is one of the themes/strengths of delaque.

I think what you have an issue with is [insert overpowered weapon] (in your example a multimelta) when being combined with said skill.
is there any non-meme skill that you could pair a multimelta with that wouldn't feel busted?

I try not to play overly broken stuff, and I don't think many of the weapons on the delaque house list are super busted.

I agree. A few of them are busted however. The heavy flamer is just garbage.
The web gun was overpowered but GW elected to fix that by making every other weapon more lethal.
The lasgun, autogun and long rifle are far more subtle and very thematic for delaque.
