Photobucket commits business suicide

There is a plugin that allows me to convert ALL external images, download them to YakTribe and attach them. I can't specify Photobucket specifically but I might do this once I'm on the new server and I have a lot more capacity. I'll test it on the current dev platform to see how big it's going to be....

What are you doing with the old threads?...

Thats where so many great project logs are! Sure, it is from hobbyists that have not been able to provide upkeep to their projects in however long, but inspiration is to be had there! However... there are an awful lot of threads in various sections that share the exact same topics... :p:censored:

That sounds... amazing! It's so frustrating looking back over old modelling threads and all the iamges are kaput!

Would it not just grab the photobucket hostage image though instead :( ?

I have started to use the gallery here to host instead. I'm going to try not to fill your server with tat though @Malo , I promise!

Yes it would. The image is still there (most of them anyway), and can be downloaded. So the script downloads the image to YakTribe server and attaches it as an inline image in the post, thereby YakTribe becomes the host of the image forever more.

All that Techno-babble goes right over my head...

What he is trying to say is that in order to keep all the magic smoke from getting out of the computer, if you use a special kind of adhesive tape made of ducks to cover all the holes it will keep the magic contained and the computer will be able to keep the pictures from running away.

I think.

i understand this!

I did a few test conversions and it works really well Setup a the cron to start processing them all on the dev server so we'll see how many images it converts and how much extra capacity it takes. I think it will be a great idea to have it auto-convert as well, which means that anyone who hotlinks an image into a post it will automatically download it and convert it to an attachment. Prevents problems like photobucket 5 years from now.

Ahh, so now I get it. When you translate the Gobble Dee Gook you get ...

I did a few quack conversions and it works really well. Taped the ducks together to start processing them all on the magic smoke machine so we'll see how many imp drawn pictographs it converts and how many more ducks it takes. I think it will be a great idea to have the ducks ruling themselves as well, which means that anyone who uses more tape to insert extra Imps into a bucket will automatically receive a signed portrait of Errol. Prevents problems like feather build up and plumage blight years from now.

It makes perfect sense now.

Update on this test. The plugin's cron job isn't working well so I'm processing them manually at around 150 posts at a time. Total of about 9000 posts that contain tags it needs to check for external images, attempt to download them and convert to a locally hosted attachment. I'm about half way now, I process groups at a time between doing other stuff.

Posts from many years ago contain many broken links as old URLs no longer are active, disappeared etc. Nothing can be done about those. As I progress into the years obviously the more valid images I encounter and they're processed successfully. Though it will likely end up around 8-10Gb of images, it will be worth it.
