Photobucket commits business suicide

All available images have been processed on the new site. Approximately one quarter of the images linked from external sites (mostly from years ago) were not able to be converted as they are no longer available at the source link.

So you converted all of the images that were showing the "Upgrade Photobucket" image so that they are now viewable? Will this also automatically happen to all Photobucket images posted from today forward.

If yes, is the process simple enough that we could post it all over the internet? :)

Correct, for photobucket and any other source. As long as they were still available there of course.

Yes, from this day forward all images embedded here from 3rd party sites will be automatically downloaded and stored locally to prevent such things from happening in future.

The only issue is that it means there's a lot more images stored on YakTribe than before. It is my hope that with enough subscribers at any one point in time, the costs involved in storing all the extra images being added over the years will be offset. And subscribers get local storage here in the Media area as well. The new server can scale the file storage up to 16Tb easily but of course each 100Gb extra means additional monthly costs for me.

It’s all the new members creating avatars!

Have seen reports that Photobucket is now hosting (waterarked) images again. A bit late...

Yeah I noticed that today. Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted - I doubt they will ever be trusted again.

One thing I've noticed from the gallery scroller at the top - we seem to have gained quite a few images that seem completely unrelated to the hobby, generally loaded into the gallery by users with 0 posts. Just thought it was odd. I suppose people could be using them in the tools.

File and photo storage on Google Drive. Not sure what that does to embedded images. Hang on. Will experiment.

Hm. Nope. Doesn't allow embedding the images.
Does allow direct linking, however:

example?

I didnt think the gallery unlocked until folk had reached juve status with 10 posts.

There have been loads recently - accounts with 0 posts uploading loads of pictures. I figured people might be using them as ganger images. But then...

Back to Photobucket, I just received the below email:

Photobucket currently hosts over 130 million photos for over 11 million free users! Effective June 1, 2019, new hosting limits will take effect that will impact a small portion of our image hosters.

What Are the New Limits?
Free hosters will be restricted to 25MB of hosting bandwidth per month. YOUR CURRENT USAGE IS OVER 25MB PER MONTH SO THIS NEW LIMITATION WILL AFFECT YOU.

What Happens If I Go Over My Bandwidth Allowance?
Free hosters, like you, who use more than 25MB of bandwidth will have all of their hosted photos watermarked and blurred.

This is an example of a blurred and watermarked image↓

pb-free-example.jpg

To restore hosting privileges and to avoid having your images blurred and watermarked after June 1, simply purchase a premium subscription plan for unlimited monthly bandwidth. Our plan pricing is the most competitive in the photo hosting industry.

I haven't added any pics or linked to PB in ages; just haven't bothered deleting what's already there.

It literally is like one of those virus things - pay us money or you can’t access your stuff!

A better way to deal with this would be any new stuff you add, it wouldn’t feel quite as bad.
