That’s the warpaint of which I’m anxious about, but I’m pleased you like them! I might have been just a tad inspired by another unrelated faction of hairy naked savages!

That’s just your filthy, Uruk hai murdering, alien mind! It’s merely how chieftain dangerous likes to wear his beast skin cloak, if it gives him a more endowed silhouette, that’s purely coincidental!

My gaming group got into this almost as soon as it was released. Thus far we have one player collecting both Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, while I've been collecting Irish. Two others have also expressed interest and are looking to do Kievan Rus and Byzantines.

As it happens, I have a substantial collection of Victrix Gallic warriors left over from forays into Warhammer Ancient Battles and SPQR, so it was easy enough for me to build up some troops for that out of what was there for the time being. The 8 warhounds I currently have for them are (fittingly) Irish Wolfhounds sourced from MMF and printed off by a buddy of mine.

As it currently stands, my 1000pt collection amounts to as follows:

1 Chieftain (FA, Hand Weapon, Talent: Hunters, Talent: Dog Trainer) - 160gp
2 Warriors (FA, Hand Weapon) - 70gp/model - 140gp
1 Warrior (UA, Spear, Warhorn) - 40gp
2 Warriors (UA, Spear, Javelin, Warhounds) - 40gp/model - 80gp
6 Warriors (SA, Hand Weapon, Javelin) - 40gp/model - 240gp
17 Warriors (SA, Spear) - 20gp/model - 340gp

With a couple games under my belt now, I'm probably leaning towards reducing the 17 warriors with shields and spears down to 12 and taking 10 unarmoured guys with spears as supporting/raiding units.

Looks like an absolute horde! Even more so with some UA spear dudes.

Not sure if it's been FAQ'd but according to P46, spear and javelin (or any ranged weapon) isn't an allowed combo.

Shooting with hand weapon and shield:
A figure with a ranged weapon can also be equipped with a hand weapon and/or a shield. This equipment can only be used in melee. In all other situations, the shooter is assumed to be too busy wielding their ranged weapon to make use of their other equipment.

They also can't take a ranged weapon and warhounds. (P80)

Pack Master profile: must be UA. Can carry an improvised weapon, a spear, or a hand weapon. The warhounds count as the pack master’s equipment, and cannot be given additional equipment.

I was wondering if perhaps a spear being a different thing to a hand weapon was a later change to the rules in its development path and didn't quite flow all the way through to every other instance of hand weapon being used.

So the rules saying someone can have a hand weapon and X may have originally included a spear. It just felt a bit like that to me when I was reading it.

Such a rule does help reduce the monster threat of hordes of spearmen with 25% slings or javelins though.

I think without it, having free spears and javelins probably becomes a little game breaking. 1000 points of Picts could otherwise look like:

Chieftain: Shield, Spear, Javelin
24 Warriors: Spear, Javelin
72 Warriors: Spear
(97 men total)

I know it's supposed to be a fun narrative game which avoids cheese, but some people will always cheese things.

Also the idea of men actually carrying a spear and a bow seems kind of weird. Sword can go on your belt. Spear / Dane Axe not so much.

Although, as I said, it may be FAQ'd. Who knows?

(EDIT: Checked the FAQ and there's nothing either way. Asked on the Pillage FB group for clarification.)

I’m not particularly happy with the warpaint, however it does make them feel like Picts, in opposed to a bunch of hairy naked guys!

I tried adding another darker layer of warpaint and foolishly used chieftain dangerous as the Guinea pig …I hated it, totally messing up the finer, more laboured pattern I gave him, so ended up painting him flesh again and starting over

I’ll be making some buildings for these, to resemble an old ruined Roman fort, but it’s some way down the list.

I look forward to stealing all your stuff and burning your house down!
