Necromunda Pre-Delaque/GW5/Compendium Release Ramblings

Is there any reason to fear it won't be translated? Weren't all the Gang War books translated so far?
I didn't really pay attention (I prefer to get my rulebooks in english these days because I'm wary of translation errors and it makes it easier to discuss over the internet)
Trust me, I too prefer them in English, but it makes Necromunda a hard sale for people to join my games. It's also offensive to potential buyers.

Yeah it started translated but the last gang war was only available in English.

Oh yeah, I completely get why it's a problem. I didn't notice they never translated GW4, quite disrespectful to those who bought the localized version of the previous books :(
Let's hope they will translate the Compendium then. I will be surprised if they don't but you never know.

I didn't realise they had not translated GW4. Hopefully that's only because they knew a compendium was coming so didn't want to pay to have the same content translated in two different forms.

I dunno. Sounds a bit contrived to me, like the reddit guy pieces together ideas from known facts like the original designer leaving.

I was the guy who wrote the second reddit post quoted, and you are totally right that I am just piecing together a few known facts and them making an opinion based on my personal perspective. I don't have any special insight so I could be talking absolute rubbish.

We know that James Hewitt knew he was leaving in the run up to N17 and was in his notice period during the writing of GW2 because he did an AMA about leaving to pursue his dream of starting his own games company ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer/comments/7k1tp0/im_james_m_hewitt_freelance_tabletop_games/ ).

We also know that he wrote the rules for Adeptus Titanicus before he wrote the rules for Necromunda because he said so in another AMA ( https://www.reddit.com/r/adeptustit...esigned_the_new_edition_of_adeptus_titanicus/ )

"It was actually nothing to do with popularity - more to do with budgeting! As Specialist Brands (our little team) was still new, and Blood Bowl hadn't even come out when we were working on AT, no one knew how popular things were going to get - so we were intentionally keeping things compact. This way, we only had to design one set of models, which all players could use!"

So he wrote the AT rules (which are very good) before Blood Bowl had even been released. That's why we think that they delayed it to make it in plastic because it had to fit into production schedules that were set in advance. It's worth reading both of those AMAs in full I think.

This is also why I think that the N17 rules feel so rushed - because imo they were. They feel like they were not playtested - because imo they were not. I also think it matches the timelines well. N18 (as it would have been planned originally) would have been a 2 year project, but after the success of Blood Bowl would have been cut down to a 1 year project for an initial launch. This is why I think that it was possible to get 2 of the gangs by Christmas, and why those gangs had not deviated much from the classic style. After JTY was employed (at the start of this year) we have seen the Gang War books improve and the gang styles deviate more from the classic range. For me that is not a co-incidence; it is the swapping out of someone treading water until they left for someone keen to make their mark.

This is why I think the release feels episodic. I don't think that GW were being money grabbing in a piecemeal release schedule, I think that they were being incompetent by rushing out a boxed set with half baked rules in them. But I see an improvement in how things are being done which gives me hope for the Compendium being what we all want it to be - namely the book that should have been released all along.

As I said before this is all just personal opinion and pattern spotting. I may be 100% wrong and talking crap. It wouldn't be the first time! But I wanted to expand a little on why I hold this personal opinion. As ever new facts will update that opinion if they contradict what I think. But for now I am optimistic, and excited about running a Dominion campaign in the new year with all the classic gangs available, and hoping that the teaser info about the further expansions of the guilders and outlanders also becomes a reality.

Hi @Wulfyn it’s a good theory, you’ve put lots of stuff in place and most of all it’s plausible.

If true I still think Games Workshop is nuts to release an unfinished untested product that the lead designer has left midway on OVER a finished one just because they want to make plastic titans...

But that’s GW!!

Hope you didn’t join just to tell me off!! Now you’re here though... welcome to YakTribe!! If you love Necromunda you’ll love it here!!

Mostly just looking forward to seeing what various hobbyists end up doing with the Delaque minis. For several of the gangs now, I wasn't entirely convinced of the style until seeing them with a different paintjob, or I wasn't sure of the poses until somebody either assembled them differently or made a few small adjustments. There is certainly the ability to create something pretty amazing from these I reckon.

I reckon champs and leader will have small psychic powers.
That would be surprising. The only house gang so far that got a special rule is house Van Saar (their Toughness can only be upgraded once.) Even giving the leader only access to Wyrd powers as a primary skillset (like they did for the cults) would set them apart too much in my opinion.
I reckon they will have access to some house-specific wargear (say "refined spook stash") that will let them eat spook during the game (similar to what can happen during the Spook harvest scenario, but more beneficial).

White Dwarf this month had a Necro article. It's been ages since they have done so, but I take this as a good sign!

Had to look it up after reading your post, totally overlooked this one (only two pages). The whole point of this mini-article seems to be getting people to buy the core box - with GW knowing it's main selling point has always been the basic rulebook that only comes with this box - and now that a separate rulebook is coming, with more and revised content, this box will soon become a shelf warmer.

I really hope that after this difficult first year of N17, things are gonna get better (whatever that means), but I fear support will slowly die and hope that at least Forgeworld gets to release the stuff they have shown quite a while ago. Quite pessimistic on the future of N17, but pretty excited and waiting for the first reviews of these compilation books.

I really hope the compiled rules will be good - but these hopes are low, especially since there have been no rumors of FW/GW contacting places such as Yak asking for help with proof reading.

And now something slightly off-topic (sorry):
I would like to recommend buying/reading the new Blck Library publication ”Wanted: Dead”.
Set in Necromunda the book (full of dirty deeds - and dirt cheap!) follows an Escher gang.
I got it tonight at release (as an ebook, after midnight) and read it in one go. Really well written apart from a few minor flaws (widespread knowledge about Space Marines, a lesbian cliché romance and unrealistic combat full of time consuming dialogue).
Support Necromunda by buying it (so we can get more). Well worth it.

It is true that if they keep thr base box as it is, no one will (or should) buy it with thr new rulebook coming soon!
One can dream: they might repackage the "correct" rulebook in there... I for sure would love to extend my goliath and eschers, and plan to get that book anyway, so...

Im not confident that the releases will continue in any meaningful way after the Delaques are out; I expect them to release one or two more FW gangs, maybe a WD gang, then peter out to two-models-a-year-not-quite-dead. Hopefully we can create a community edition (Im expecting the compendium to be a copy/paste job rather than a rework, and expect it will be missing one small segment from each issue of GW), but GW won't care for that with a game they're still nominally supporting.

Oh please don't think I was telling anyone off! I have a rather dry forum writing style sadly that comes across as stern when I'm hoping to be whimsical! I just wanted to quote a couple of sources and clarify that I could be talking total crap :)

I joined earlier in the year to make use of the excellent gang tracker you guys have here that was a huge help in running our first campaign. We went for a narrative one because the turf war campaign system looked... well it ain't great is it? In the end the gang favours tilted it the other way with massive bloat across the underhive. Being narrative lessened the impact, but we are looking forward to 'season 2' using the dominion rules early next year. I'll be playing Delaque!

Well all the models seem to have ocular implants and rebreathers plugged into some sort of tank on their hip so I would guess as a minimum they will get photogoggles/infragoggles and rebreathers or some sort of spook enhancement.

Their guns look a bit odd as well (not just the additional silencers) and they appear to have an autogun an autopistol and another autoweapon somewhere in between.

They also have a lot of guns with canisters on them so I would guess that they are getting some sort of weaponised gas weapon as well, possibly spook grenades and a template has weapon weapon.

They also have lots of knives but I think they will just have them as their only close combat weapon unless they also get access to the Escher stilleto knives as well.

They will also get webbers and webpistols on their house weapon list.

That’s my theory crafting for the day.

Not sure about the stiletto knives, but the one special only Escher weapon would be the chem-thrower, whereas poisoned stiletto knives are referred to as being used by assassins and the like. Would certainly fit the theme.

I would also assume their cloaks would have something like to-hit-modifiers or reduced visibility similar to gas grenades. These would be house-specific similar to the van Saar armour.

Stiletto knives are already available in the Trading post so they are not really Escher-flavoured. I hope those Delaque knives are good ol' Stiletto and not yet another slightly-different weapon. Also the thingie on their belt look like the Escher chem-synth, so I'm guessing it's just that.

The knives are almost guaranteed to be ranged or at the very least have the versatile trait - two of the gangers pictured have three of them, and there is little reason for that if they are only used in melee.
