Hey all!

I'm getting ready to start my first necromunda campaign with a buncha newbies.

I've decided to pick Cawdor for a few reasons, but the non-negotiable ones were:
  1. bloodborne rifle spears (the blunderpole)
  2. Big Crossbow
  3. bomb rats
It seems like (1) & (2) are widely considered to be pretty good, (3) less so, but we're not hyper-competitive, so I'm happy to give it a go :)

My main question is how to structure it; would you pick:

A. Rat specialist (alongside a word-keeper & crossbow firebrand)
B. Rat word-keeper (to use the extra intelligence)

Any other tips before I make my starting purchases?

Thanks!

give your leader the 'overseer' skill to allow the crossbow guy the ability to move and shoot.
the rat can turn and kill its handler and is expensive so dont give it to a main character , and remember when you run out of grenades you will need a spare weapon.
Emprahh be with you.

Vaguely, off rule of fun, thinking of:

Leader:
155 - Word-Keeper (Greatsword, Smoke Grenades, Bullcharge)
(Not really planning to keep him alive if I go for cult of the doom. Is this a Bad Idea?)

Champs:
225 - Firebrand (Crossbow, Flak Armour, Step Aside)
180 - Firebrand (Polegun, Rats, Blasting Charges, Incendiaries, Flak Armour, Lord of the rats)

Brethren:
2x85 - Brethren (Blunderpole)
70 - Brethren (Flail, autopistol)
70 - Brethren (2 handed axe)

Bonepickers:
2x35 - Bonepicker (Axe, Stub gun)
1x30 - Bonepicker (2x autopistol)
1x30 - Bonepicker (2x stub gun)

That feels like it does a lot of what I'd fine fun.

Should I try & find an extra 15 creds somewhere to turn that 2-handed axe brethren into another blunderpole? Or make any other changes? I've mostly avoided the elite redemptionists, as I don't enjoy the models as much!

Avoid flak armour, for the cost it isn't good. Can't remember if cawdor gets mesh on their list or not. Either go without armour or wait for mesh. The pole gun is reasonable, for creds you could go reclaimed auto gun (won't be shooting it much with two grenade types) and you could buy two axes later for combat if you really want and get an extra identical attack. This allows for scaling depending on creds in hand.

You already have 2 blunder poles so don't worry about that. I would knock a number of those pistols off and just stash the creds, either for a medical escort or replacement body. Even if you don't pay the Doc you get the models equipment (sans armour) so it can be worth the after battle action for the weapons alone. Then you can try a few games then add the extras as you see a need or invest in better trading post gear...
