Sorry if this has been discussed before. I've only gotten back into the game in the last year or so.

We played a game last week where my friend's gang was trying to rescue their captured leader. After freeing him, both the rescuer and the leader were taken out of action. The gang later failed a bottle test.

What would happen to the captive? Because the scenario states that the captive must make an escape off a table edge. And that once freed, is treated like any other model.

We let it go ahead, but I have to admit it feels a bit jammy that rescuers could just free someone and then go "we're bottling out now".

What's the community's take?

id say the hostage bottles along with the gang as his is 'being treated like any other model' . mission done. think of the end of 'aliens'

It doesn't specify unless I m mistaken that fleeing doesn't count as long as the other criteria are met. It's more like everyone for himself.

That being said a leader that get captured and then flee is about to lose all reputation credits he may have.

I will if narration is important for your gaming group have a challenge take place to eventually replace him or find a scenario or write one where he can prove himself.

If he failed he is at the very least strip down of his position, exiles or killed.

But that's up to you.

the scenario states that the captive must make an escape off a table edge.

I don't think it does. It says that the scenario ends if they escape off a table edge. But that's not a requirement for rescuing them.

If he's been cut free, then he's rescued (but this doesn't immediately end the game). If the attacking gang then bottles, then the game ends.

The (former) captive has been freed, but would have to roll another serious injury if taken OOA (and could be captured again).

I realised one thing that might be an issue here.

it feels a bit jammy that rescuers could just free someone and then go "we're bottling out now".

Just to check, you do realise that a gang can't simply choose to bottle out whenever they want (e.g., as soon as they've freed the captive)?

You can only voluntarily bottle if you've taken at least two casualties.

Granted, it may still seem like an easy way to end the game, after freeing the captive. But then, so (in some cases) is moving the former captive off the board.
